A gene-editing/complementation strategy for tissue-specific lignin reduction while preserving biomass yield

Description: This article develops a method, using a single DNA construct that uses CRISPR–Cas9 gene editing to knock-out expression of an endogenous gene of lignin monomer biosynthesis while at the same time expressing a modified version of the gene’s open reading frame that escapes cutting by the Cas9 system and complements the introduced mutation in a tissue-specific manner. This method is applicable to any plant species in which transformation and gene editing are feasible and validated vessel-specific … more

[Class of children and a teacher seated on log stools in a circle outside]

Description: Photograph of about thirteen children and one adult from a school class sitting in a circle on stools made of logs around a red and white stripe rug outdoors. Two other adults, who appear to be parents, stand in the top-left of the image. The children are eating popsicles and have their face masks partially hanging on their ear or tucked under their chins. The child in the foreground of the image raises his hand signaling the teacher who is looking to his right.
