LMFBR large valve development. Static sodium proof-of-principle (POP) test design and analyses interim summary report for the 12. 0-inch rotating offset ball valve internals

Description: This report updates progress made by AMCO to date in the development of the 12-inch rotating offset ball valve, for use in sodium isolation service for the LMFBR Demonstration Plant Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS). The work is being performed under Contract No. AT-(04-03)-1035 ERDA SAN. The design incorporates an offset rotating ball in conjunction with a flexible metal lip seal to provide shut-off in liquid sodium at elevated temperatures.

BEAM-CAVITY INTERACTION IN ELECTRON STORAGE RINGS

Description: A formal expression is obtained for the energy loss per turn, of a rigid bunch of electrons, to a closed cylindrical cavity with quality factor Q. The expression is valid provided the diameter of the entrance and exit ports for the beam are small compared to the bunch length. The effect of the ports is studied in an independent computational method. The energy loss is numerically evaluated for a range of parameters of interest to electron storage rings.

Assessment of solar-powered cooling of buildings. Final report

Description: Three solar-powered cooling concepts are analyzed and evaluated. These are: (1) the solar Rankine concept in which a Rankine cycle driven by solar energy is used to drive a vapor compression refrigeration machine, (2) the solar-assisted Rankine concept in which a Rankine cycle driven by both solar energy and fuel combustion is used to drive a vapor compression refrigeration machine, and (3) the solar absorption concept in which solar energy is used to drive an absorption refrigeration machine. … more

Diets of black-tailed hares on the Hanford Reservation

Description: A fecal pellet analyses showed that black-tailed hares (jackrabbits) were selective in plants chosen as food. The most abundant herbaceous plant, cheatgrass, was not found in the pellets. Sagebrush and bitterbrush, woody plants, were not an important part of the hares' diet. Forbs, rabbitbrush, and certain grass species were preferred foods. (auth)

Regional gravity investigation of the Hanford Reservation

Description: This study uses existing Bouguer gravity data and applies the terrain and regional corrections needed to produce a residual gravity map. The resultant map is then examined to determine the value of gravity data in locating potential areas of buried stream channels; in clarifying the buried geologic structure of the Hanford Reservations; as an aid in locating areas that need additional subsurface definition; and in pointing out areas of potential fractures in the basalt surface. Preliminary investigation of liquid phase sintering in ferrous systems

Description: Liquid phase sintering was utilized to achieve, by a simple compaction and sintering procedure involving short times and moderate temperatures, a virtually full dense high carbon Fe:C alloy and high boron Fe:B alloy. Parameters such as powder characteristics and mixing, compacting pressure, heating program and the liquid phase fraction were found to influence the sintered density. The response of the Fe:C alloy to a heat treatment is reported along with preliminary experiments in the iron base … more

Transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity of saturated sedimentary rocks in the Hanford Reservation

Description: The sedimentary rocks of the Pasco Basin include glaciofluviatile deposits and the Ringold Formation. They may also include sedimentary rocks interbedded with the basalts. In terms of the ground-water flow continuum these rocks are divided into the unsaturated zone, the upper dominantly coarse-clastic part of the zone of saturation and the lower dominantly fine-grained part of the zone of saturation. The effective porosity of the glaciofluviatile deposits that make up the upper coarse-clastic z… more

NMR Study of 3He In Uranium Tritide

Description: The distribution of 3He atoms, which are formed by triton decay, in uranium tritide has been investigated by pulse NMR techniques. The spin concentrations, spin echo lineshapes, and nuclear relaxation times for 3He have been measured at room temperature. From the field dependence of the NMR linewidth and age dependence of the spin-spin relaxation time, we conclude that 3He is being trapped in microscopic gas bubbles (i.e., nominal dimensions ~<100 A) which expand to accomodate additional 3He at… more
