Results of the radiological survey at Kennedy Park, Money and Sidney Streets, Lodi, New Jersey (LJ062)

Description: Maywood Chemical Works (MCW) of Maywood, New Jersey, generated process wastes and residues associated with the production and refining of thorium and thorium compounds from monazite ores from 1916 to 1956. MCW supplied rare earth metals and thorium compounds to the Atomic Energy Commission and various other government agencies from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. Area residents used the sandlike waste from this thorium extraction process mixed with tea and cocoa leaves as mulch in their yards.… more

Survey of thermal imaging technology and applications at the Savannah River Site

Description: This memorandum is an introduction to thermal imaging systems and their use. Emission of infrared radiation from ideal and real materials is described, as are methods of detection in modern thermal imaging systems. Typical specifications and features of commercially available thermal imaging systems are described, and uses of thermal imaging are discussed. At the Savannah River Site (SRS), thermal imaging has been used extensively to measure the temperature of surface water that carries heat fr… more

Methane oxidation over dual redox catalysts

Description: The objective of this research is to develop the scientific background for direct catalytic oxidation of methane over oxides that are doubly doped with transition metal ions. The desired process aims at employing of a double redox mechanism, where one redox couple is utilized for activation of oxygen and another for the conversion of CH{sub 3} radicals to carbocations via electron transfer reaction. The latter species can react with surface OH{sup {minus}} groups to form methanol or formaldehyd… more

Development of a current collection loss management system for SDI homopolar power supplies

Description: High speed, high power density current collection systems have been identified as an enabling technology required to construct homopolar power supplies to meet SDI missions. This work is part of a three-year effort directed towards the analysis, experimental verification, and prototype construction of a current collection system designed to operate continuously at 2 kA/cm{sup 2}, at a rubbing speed of 200 m/s, and with acceptable losses in a space environment. To data, no system has achieved th… more

Description: A comprehensive evaluated neutronic data file for bismuth, extending from 10{sup {minus}5} eV to 20.0 MeV, is described. The experimental database, the application of the theoretical models, and the evaluation rationale are outlined. Attention is given to uncertainty specification, and comparisons are made with the prior ENDF/B-V evaluation. The corresponding numerical file, in ENDF/B-VI format, has been transmitted to the National Nuclear Data Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory. 106 refs.,… more

Stable Auroral Red arc occurrences detected by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory photometer network: A decade of observations, 1978--1988

Description: Using data obtained from a network of all-sky scanning photometers designed to operate routinely for long periods of time, a comprehensive inspection of observations covering the time period 1978--1988 has revealed features that we interpret to be Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arcs during 250 nighttime observing periods. These arcs result from high temperature within the ionospheric electron gas that is maintained by slow leakage of energy from the earth's magnetosphere. A listing of these even… more

Electroformation of uranium hemispherical shells

Description: This effort was directed at developing an electrochemical process for forming uniform and dendrite-free deposits of uranium from molten salts. This process is to be used for the electroformation of free-standing hemispherical shells of uranium for nuclear applications. Electrodeposition of uranium onto a substrate was accomplished with a fused chloride mixture containing 42 wt% UCl{sub 3} and a fused chloride-fluoride mixture containing 4 wt % UF{sub 4}. Under pulsed potential control at 504{de… more

Description: The basic objective of the Heavy Ion Fusion Accelerator Research (HIFAR) program is to assess the suitability of heavy ion accelerators as igniters for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). A specific accelerator technology, the induction linac, has been studied at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and has reached the point at which its viability for ICF applications can be assessed over the next few years. The HIFAR program addresses the generation of high-power, high-brightness beams of heavy ion… more

Hanford protective barriers program: Status of asphalt barrier studies - FY 1989

Description: The Hanford Protective Barrier Program is evaluating alternate barriers to provide a means of meeting stringent water infiltration requirements. One type of alternate barrier being considered is an asphalt-based layer, 1.3 to 15 cm thick. Evaluations of these barriers were initiated in FY 1988, and, based on laboratory studies, two asphalt formulations were selected for further testing in small-tube lysimeters: a hot rubberized asphalt and an admixture of cationic asphalt emulsion and concrete … more

Comparison of pressure ransient response in intensely and sparsely fractured reservoirs

Description: A comprehensive analytical model is presented to study the pressure transient behavior of a naturally fractured reservoir with a continuous matrix block size distribution. Geologically realistic probability density functions of matrix block size are used to represent reservoirs of varying fracture intensity and uniformity. Transient interporosity flow is assumed and interporosity skin is incorporated. Drawdown and interference pressure transient tests are investigated. The results show distinct… more

Relief valve sizing for the sup 3 He recirculation system of the MP-9 polarized target

Description: This report contains pressure safety analyses for the relief valving of the {sup 3}He pump system, as distinct from the dilution refrigerator (DR). However, in a few instances it has been convenient to include here some aspects of the interaction between the DR and the gas loop proper. The more localized safety aspects of certain elements of the DR, such as the vacuum jacket and window, the Still, and the Phase Separator, will be addressed in a separate analysis.

The behavior of matter under nonequilibrium conditions: Fundamental aspects and applications

Description: As in the previous period, our work has been concerned with the study of the properties of nonequilibrium systems and especially with the mechanism of self-organization. As is well-known, the study of self-organization began with the investigation of hydrodynamical or chemical instabilities studied from the point of view of macroscopic physics. The main outcome is that nonequilibrium generates spatial correlations of macroscopic physics. The main outcome is that nonequilibrium generates spatial… more

The Gevaltig: An inertial fusion powered manned spacecraft design for outer solar system missions

Description: The Gevaltig is an inertial fusion powered rocket engine capable of manned missions to other planets with round trip mission times as low as 100 days. The Gevaltig design was previously described for a mission to Mars. This effort defines the spacecraft components in terms of mass and presents a mission analysis for a manned trip to Titan, a moon of Saturn. The Gevaltig component masses are provided as a function of fuel pellet ignition frequency. These variable mass components include the fuel… more

Japanese Refrigerators Field Testing.

Description: Residential refrigerators consume the equivalent of 1700 megawatts (MW) of baseload power in the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) service area. Japanese manufacturers have designed refrigerator units that appear more energy efficient than some currently available American models. This report summarizes preliminary findings from field testing of 12 refrigerators of Japanese manufacture to evaluate annual kilowatt hour (kWh) use during actual operation. The units have also undergone laborato… more

Upper limits on neutron bursts emitted from Ti pressurized D sub 2 gas cells

Description: In a search for bursts of neutrons from Ti in pressurized D{sub 2} gas cells, no statistically significant deviations from the background were observed for events where five or more neutrons are detected over a ten day experiment, including 103 hours of counting with cells on, and 28 hours counting of various backgrounds. Up to four cells were used including some 60 grams of 662-Ti fillings in a pressurized cylinder with 40-60 atmosphere of D{sub 2} gas. Other Ti samples were used too. The samp… more
