THE ELECTROMAGNETIC PINCH EFFECT FOR SPACE PROPULSION

Description: The phenomenon of the electromagnetic pinch effect is used to accelerate ionized gases for space propulsion. Electrical energy, initially stored in capacitors, is discharged across two nozzle shaped electrodes wherein the radial pinch is converted to axial motion of the effected gases instead of confinement at the axis. The gas dynamics of a pinch using the hydrodynamical model of a msgnetic piston driving a shock wave is combined with the electrodynamics of the circuit to calculate the dischar… more

Dissolution of aluminium oxide as a regulating factor in aqueous aluminum corrosion

Description: The solubility of aluminum corrosion product in contact with metallic aluminum in deionized water has been determined over the range 80 to 350/sup 0/C. Evidence is presented to show that oxide dissolution results in the formation of a porous oxide on aluminum exposed in refreshed dynamic systems. Dynamic corrosion rate data have been analyzed on the basis of parabolic film growth and a linear oxide degradation process acting simultaneously on the system. The degradation process has been shown t… more

Isotopic sources of secondary radiation : second interim technical report covering the period from March 1 to July 1, 1959

Description: Summary. During the past year the work carried out in this program has included experiments on the x-ray output produced by the separated fission product beta sources, the interpretation of such experiments for the effective design of high level secondary x-ray sources, and the design and testing of prototype sources of secondary radiation for specific industrial applications. In this report results of work carried out during the past fours months are reported: (1) analysis of beta-excited x-… more

P.T.: IP-272-A-FP, Pilot test of self-supported fuel elements in ribless zirconium process tubes

Description: Up to one hundred ribless zirconium process tubes are to be installed in C Reactor, and necessary reactor equipment modifications made to permit routine charging of these tubes with self-supported natural uranium fuel elements. This test authorizes continued loading in these tubes until authorized by process standards or until it is deemed impractical to convert C Reactor to this geometry.

Design of production test IP-280-A-FP: Irradiation of alloyed dingot uranium fuel elements

Description: Objective of this test is to authorize irradiation of alloyed, low hydrogen dingot uranium fuel elements on a pilot scale, and to monitor their performance. Initially, 25 tons per month of alloyed, low hydrogen dingot material will be charged for two months. Measured charges will be loaded with the initial 25 tons to monitor the stability of this material. Following a two-month delay in the monitor charging, and if the dingot meets all specifications, routine charging of quantities up to 60 ton… more

Gamma Rays from Inelastic Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons on Pb²⁰⁸

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for the production of 2.61-Mev gamma rays from the Pb-208(n, n')Pb-208* reaction has been measured for five different angles from 50 to 130 degrees. The angular distribution appears to be isotropic within the precision of the experiments, and leads to an integrated cross section of 25.5 +/- 4.6 millibarns."

Electronic Engineering Design Problems in Fusion Research

Description: Abstract: "Design problems peculiar to fusion research are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of large energy storage systems, transfer of and utilization of this energy. In addition, design criteria for delay systems, data reduction systems, and other problems related to our fusion research program are discussed."

Transistor Driven Beam Switching Tube Decade Counter

Description: Abstract: "This paper describes an electrical readout, decade counter employing the magnetron beam switching tube with transistor drive. Double pulse resolution is one microsecond. The unit will accept a variety of transistor types and will tolerate supply voltage variations of +/- 20% at ambient temperatures up to 60 C. A "Pixie" neon indicator is driven without the use of additional transistors. A readout circuit for printer on punched paper tape is presented."

Chemical Processing Department monthly report, July 1959

Description: Pu production from separation plants was only 65% of the monthly commitment owing to Purex difficulties. UO{sub 3} production and shipments both met schedules. Although unfabricated Pu metal production was reduced, all shipping commitments were met on schedule. Purex equipment responded satisfactorily to decontamination. 860,000 Ci of Ce{sup 144} were recovered from Purex Conc. IWW. The all-Ti L-3 concentrator loop was installed in the Redox Pu Concentrator. The safety of the slag and crucible … more

Design of Production Test IP-247-A-8-FP, irradiation of 1.47% enriched self-supported I&E fuel element in ribless process tubes. Revision

Description: To evaluate the self-supported fuel element concept, tests are underway to determine the performance of collapsible bridge-rail supported fuel elements in ribless process tubes under present reactor conditions at B Reactor. It appears expedient, however, to extend this evaluation to future operating conditions in order to establish the relative feasibility of conversion to self-supported fuel elements in ribless tubes in present reactors. Utilization of 1.47% U-235 enrichment will provide fuel … more

Potential Applications of Nuclear Energy in a Marine Environment

Description: Introduction: In January 1959, Stanford Research Institute was asked by the Office of Maritime Reactors, Division of Reactor Development, of the United States Atomic Energy Commission to identify potential applications of nuclear energy in a marine environment, excluding those involving standard commercial surface ships and direct defense applications, and to conduct a preliminary evaluation of these applications in order to determine which ones appeared most feasible for early implementation.

Hydromagnetic Stability of a Diffuse Linear Pinch

Description: Abstract: "The hydromagnetic energy principle is applied to the derivation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the hydromagnetic stability of a linear pinch with distributed plasma current (a diffuse linear pinch). The results are quite general in that the axial and azimuthal components of the magnetic field, which determines the structure of the pinch completely, are treated as arbitrary functions of distance from the axis. For purpose of illustration, the general results are applied to… more
