Carrier-free Radioisotopes from Cyclotron Targets I. Preparation and Isolation of Sn113 and In114 from Cadmium

Description: The cyclotron is the only practical source of many carrier-free radioisotopes. The preparation and radiochemical isolation of a number of these activities, produced in the 60-inch cyclotron of Crocker Laboratory, will be presented in this paper and in subsequent papers of this series. In most cases the carrier-free radioisotopes were prepared for use in biological systems and the final preparations were in the form of isotonic saline solutions at a range of pH from 5 to 8. The present paper rep… more

A Rapid Colorimeric Method for the Determination of Phosphate in Uranium Waste Solutions

Description: Report discussing tests of a new colorimetric method. From abstract: "A colorimetric method, which is a modification of the classical phosphomolybdic acid method, has been developed for the determination of phosphate in synthetic uranium waste solutions...The chief advantage of the method, over those presently included in HW Manuals, is the rapidity with which determinations may be carried out."

The Coulometric Determination of Acetic Acid

Description: Abstract: "Small amounts of acetic acid, equivalent to 400 ul. of 0.3 to 0.13 g/L. can be titrated coulonatrically in the presence of a 10 to 25-fold excess of HN03 in 70%, isopropanol. An accuracy of +/- 0.1% and a precision of +/- 8.5% (99% limite) are obtained.

P Division monthly report, July 1949

Description: The progress report discusses activities of the P Division for the month of July, 1949. The B and F piles operated at 275 megawatts and the D pile at 305 megawatts throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities. A total of 57.5 tons of metal, at an average concentration of 363 megawatt days/ton (MWD/ton) was discharged from the piles during the month. This included 41.9 tons of Class V (alpha-rolled, triple-dipped, completely transformed) metal at an average concentration … more

Compilation of data on composition of bismuth phosphate process metal wastes

Description: The available information on the ionic and radiochemical composition of current and aged bismuth phosphate process wastes is tabulated here for the convenience of those concerned with metal recovery. In addition to its application in the design of research and development experiments, the compilation may serve to suggest specific needs for additional analytical data. For convenience in chemical calculation, molar compositions have been calculated for the ionic constituents based on the g/1 valu… more

Tests for Hydrogen Cyanide and Hydrogen Sulfide

Description: A potential source of dangerous concentrations of hydrogen cyanide exists in the plating room of the Machine Shop where open plating baths containing cyanide salts are maintained and where solid cyanide salts are stored. Also the use of hydrogen sulfide in certain steps of the waste disposal process has lead to noticeable and sometimes objectionable concentrations of this gas in the air of the "WD" Building. In view of the toxic properties of these two gases, it was desirable to set up suitable… more

A high resolution scale-of-four

Description: A high resolution scale-of-four has been developed to be used in conjunction with the nuclear particle detection devices in applications where the counting rate is unusually high. Specifically, it is intended to preceed the commercially available medium resolution scaling circuits and so decrease the resolving time of the counting system. The circuit will function reliably on continuously recurring pulses separated by less than 0.1 μ sec. It will resolve two pulses (occuring at a moderate repet… more

A radar method of calibrating airspeed installations on airplanes in maneuvers at high altitudes and at transonic and supersonic speeds

Description: A method of calibrating the static-pressure source of a pitot static airspeed installation on an airplane in level flight, dives, and other maneuvers at high altitude and at transonic and supersonic speeds is described. The method principally involves the use of radar-phototheodolite tracking equipment. The various sources of error in the method are discussed and sample calibrations are included.

Critical Combinations of Shear and Direct Axial Stress for Curved Rectangular Panels

Description: "A solution is presented for the problem of the buckling of curved rectangular panels subjected to combined shear and direct axial stress. Charts giving theoretical critical combinations of shear and direct axial stress are presented for panels having five different length-width ratios. Because the actual critical compressive stress of rectangular panels having substantial curvature is known to be much lower than the theoretical value, a semiempirical method of analysis of curved panels subject… more

Two-dimensional compressible flow in centrifugal compressors with straight blades

Description: Report presenting six numerical examples for steady, two-dimensional, compressible, nonviscous flow in centrifugal compressors with straight blades, the center lines of which generate a right circular cone when rotated about the axis of the compressors. A seventh example is presented for incompressible flow. Correlation equations are developed whereby the flow conditions in any impeller with straight blades can be determined for all operating conditions.
