Environmental protection appraisals: a suggested guide for US Department of Energy field organization. Revision 1

Description: This manual has been prepared to assist DOE field organizations in conducting environmental protection appraisals of activities at DOE operating-level facilities. Its primary use will be by DOE operations offices in their appraisal of facilities operating under the authority of the Atomic Energy Act. However, the manual can also be used by other DOE field organizations. This manual is organized in modules that parallel those in the internal environmental audit checklist. It is assumed that the … more

Field-independent normalization of SSC Collider Ring costs

Description: The SSC Collider Ring represents the dominating cost element of the SSC project. The number of variables involved in optimizing the facility is very large so it is helpful to try to parameterize them in a way that allows a straightforward comparison of primary options. Cost information has been drawn from the Reference Designs Study supplemented by data from studies carried out by the Harza Engineering Company in Illinois. Various studies indicate that a 9' to 10' tunnel seems optimal from a co… more

Ion cyclotron heating experiments in PLT

Description: Results from ICRF heating experiments in the D-/sup 3/He minority regime on the PLT tokamak are reported. At the highest coupled rf power of 2.6 MW, a central ion temperature of 3.6 keV has been measured in plasmas with a central density of 5 x 10/sup 13/cm/sup -3/. The central value of the electron temperature is strongly modulated by the sawtooth internal relaxation and reaches values in excess of 3 keV. No deterioration of the ion heating efficiency has been found in the investigated range o… more

Thyroid absorbed dose for people at Rongelap, Utirik, and Sifo on March 1, 1954

Description: A study was undertaken to reexamine thyroid absorbed dose estimates for people accidentally exposed to fallout at Rongelap, Sifo, and Utirik Islands from the Pacific weapon test known as Operation Castle BRAVO. The study included: (1) reevaluation of radiochemical analysis, to relate results from pooled urine to intake, retention, and excretion functions; (2) analysis of neutron-irradiation studies of archival soil samples, to estimate areal activities of the iodine isotopes; (3) analysis of so… more

Measurement of the lifetimes of the neutral and charged D mesons

Description: Results are presented on the use of a high-resolution drift chamber in the Mark II Detector at PEP to measure the lifetimes of D/sup 0/ and D/sup + -/ mesons produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at 29 GeV. Based on a sample of 74 events for the D/sup 0/ mesons and 23 events for the D/sup + -/ mesons, the lifetimes are found to be tau/sub D/sup 0/ = 4.7/sub -0.8//sup +0.9/ +- 0.5 x 10/sup -13/ s; tau/sub D/sup + -// = 8.9/sub -2.7//sup +3.8/ +- 1.3 x 10/sup -13/ s. Test Series 2: seismic-fragility tests of naturally-aged Class 1E Exide FHC-19 battery cells

Description: The seismic-fragility of naturally-aged nuclear station safety-related batteries is of interest for two reasons: (1) to determine actual failure modes and their thresholds and (2) to determine the validity of using the electrical capacity of individual cells as an indicator of the ''end-of-life'' of a battery if subjected to a seismic event. This report, the second in a test series of an extensive seismic research program, covers the testing of 10-year old lead-calcium Exide FHC-19 cells from t… more

Computer Simulation of High Resolution Transmission Electron Micrographs: Theory and Analysis

Description: Computer simulation of electron micrographs is an invaluable aid in their proper interpretation and in defining optimum conditions for obtaining images experimentally. Since modern instruments are capable of atomic resolution, simulation techniques employing high precision are required. This thesis makes contributions to four specific areas of this field. First, the validity of a new method for simulating high resolution electron microscope images has been critically examined. Second, three dif… more

Asymptotic analysis of rf-heated collisional plasma

Description: It is shown that a distribution of electrons in resonance with traveling waves, but colliding with background distributions of electrons and ions, evolves to a steady state. Details of the steady state are given analytically in the asymptotic limit of high electron energy and are compared with numerical solutions. The asymptotic analytic solution may be useful for quickly relating emission data to likely excitations and is more reliable than conventional numerical solutions at high energy. A me… more

Research with high-power short-wavelength lasers

Description: Three important high-temperature, high-density experiments were conducted recently using the 10-TW, short-wavelength Novette laser system at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. These experiments demonstrated successful solutions to problems that arose during previous experiments with long wavelength lasers (lambda greater than or equal to 1..mu..m) in which inertial confinement fusion (ICF), x-ray laser, and other high-temperature physics concepts were being tested. The demonstrations w… more

Organic materials for second harmonic generation. Final report

Description: Materials were chosen by screening the Cambridge Crystallographic Index for new noncentrosymmetric crystalline compounds, by screening commercially available materials or by synthesis of unique new substances. Measurements were then made on the powder form of these materials. Langmuir-Blodgett films were deposited and studied. In addition to the above studies, a computer program was developed to calculate (hyper) polarizabilities of organic molecules and thus aid in the selection of materials f… more

Coupled plasma-neutral transport model for the scrape-off region

Description: Analysis of the scrape-off region requires treatment of the plasma transport along and across the field lines and inclusion of the neutral transport effects. A method for modeling the scrape-off region that is presented here uses separate models for each of these aspects that are coupled together through an iteration procedure that requires only minimal numerical effort. The method is applied here to estimate the neutral pumping rates in the pump-limiter and divertor options for a proposed deut… more

Numerical model of massive hydraulic fracture. Final report. [SYMFRAC1]

Description: This project has involved development of a hydraulic fracture simulator which calculates fracture height as a function of distance from the wellbore in a situation in which a payzone is bounded by two zones in which the minimum in-situ stress is higher (the fracture is vertical). The fracture must be highly elongated (length/height ratio approximately greater than 4) and variations in elastic modulus across zones are ignored. First, we describe the leakoff and spurt loss calculations employed i… more
