Description: Growth of laser initiated damage plays a major role in determining optics lifetime in high power laser systems. Previous measurements have established that the lateral diameter grows exponentially. Design for a High Energy Density Kelvin-Helmholtz Experiment

Description: While many high energy density physics (HEDP) Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability experiments have been fielded as part of basic HEDP and astrophysics studies, not one HEDP Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) experiment has been successfully performed. Herein, a design for a novel HEDP x-ray driven KH experiment is presented along with supporting radiation-hydrodynamic simulation and theory.

LONGITUDINAL RESISTIVE INSTABILITIES OF INTENSE COASTING BEAMS IN PARTICLE ACCELERATORS

Description: The effect of finite resistance in the vacuum-tank walls on the longitudinal stability of an intense beam of particles in an accelerator is investigated theoretically. We show that even if the particle frequency is an increasing function of particle energy, the wall resistance can render the beam unstable against longitudinal bunching. Magnetic structure near the Co/NiO(001) interface

Description: We investigate the magnetic coupling at the Co/NiO interface using soft x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) and circular dichroism taking explicitly into account the recently observed angular dependence of the XMLD with respect to the crystallographic axes. We find that the Co moments are aligned perpendicular to the NiO moments. Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging of Electron Heated Targets in Petawatt Laser Experiments

Description: The study of the transport of electrons, and the flow of energy into a solid target or dense plasma, is instrumental in the development of fast ignition inertial confinement fusion. An extreme ultraviolet (XUV) imaging diagnostic at 256 eV and 68 eV provides information about heating and energy deposition within petawatt laser-irradiated targets. Triple Differential Cross sections and Nuclear Recoil in Two-Photon Double Ionization of Helium

Description: Triple differential cross sections (TDCS) for two-photon double ionization of helium are calculated using the method of exterior complex scaling both above and below the threshold for sequential ionization (54.4 eV). It is found that sequential ionization produces characteristic behavior in the TDCS that identifies that process when it is in competition with nonsequential ionization. Poroelastic modeling of seismic boundary conditions across afracture

Description: A fracture within a porous background is modeled as a thin porous layer with increased compliance and finite permeability. For small layer thickness, a set of boundary conditions can be derived that relate particle velocity and stress across a fracture, induced by incident poroelastic waves. Two-photon Photo-emission of Ultrathin Film PTCDA Morphologies on Ag(111)

Description: Morphology- and layer-dependent electronic structure and dynamics at the PTCDA/Ag(111) interface have been studied with angle-resolved two-photon photoemission. In Stranski-Krastanov growth modes, the exposed wetting layer inhibited the evolution of the vacuum level and valence band to bulk values. Collider Signals Of Top Quark Flavor Violation From A Warped ExtraDimension

Description: We study top quark flavor violation in the framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in the bulk. Such a scenario provides solutions to both the Planck-weak hierarchy problem and the flavor puzzle of the SM without inducing a flavor problem. Dynamic Response of Copper Subjected to Quasi-Isentropic, Gas-Gun Driven Loading

Description: A transmission electron microscopy study of quasi-isentropic high-pressure loading (peak pressures between 18 GPa and 52 GPa) of polycrystalline and monocrystalline copper was carried out. Description: We present measurements of B meson decays to the final states {omega}K*, {omega}{rho}, and {omega}f{sub 0}, where K* indicates a spin 0, 1, or 2 strange meson. Description: A beam profile and energy monitor for H{sup -} beams based on laser photoneutralization was built at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)* for use on the High Intensity Neutrino Source (HMS) at Fermilab. High-Resolution UV Relay Lens for Particle Size Distribution Measurements Using Holography

Description: Shock waves passing through a metal sample can produce ejecta particulates at a metal-vacuum interface. Holography records particle size distributions by using a high-power, short-pulse laser to freeze particle motion. The sizes of the ejecta particles are recorded using an in-line Fraunhofer holography technique.
