Application of heavy-light methods to B meson physics

Description: The heavy-light method is applied to the study of the B meson spectrum, the pseudoscalar decay constant f{sub B}, the mixing (B) parameter, and exclusive semileptonic B meson decays. Preliminary results are discussed for f{sub B} and the B parameter at {beta} = 5.7 and {kappa} = 0.165 on a 12{sup 3} {times} 24 lattice and at {beta} = 5.9 and {kappa} = 0.158 on a 16{sup 3} {times} 32 lattice. 9 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

Comparison of Varve and 14C Chronologies from Steel Lake, Minnesota, USA

Description: Annually laminated sediments (varves) offer an effective means of acquiring high-quality paleoenvironmental records. However, the strength of a varve chronology can be compromised by a number of factors, such as missing varves, ambiguous laminations, and human counting error. Activation and deactivation of high concentration arsenic with some evidence of precipitation

Description: Using box-shaped profiles created by laser melt annealing, the authors investigate the kinetics of arsenic activation and deactivation. They find deactivation shows no history effects, which can be consistent either with clustering or precipitation for the cases considered. For activation, they notice it occurs on very short time scales, followed by a slower deactivation process. This is suggestive evidence that at least some precipitation occurs.

Deducing the 237U(n,f) cross-section using the Surrogate Ratio Method

Description: The authors have deduced the cross section for {sup 237}U(n,f) over an equivalent neutron energy range from 0 to 20 MeV using the Surrogate Ratio method. Kinetics of carboplatin-DNA binding in genomic DNA and bladder cancer cells as determined by accelerator mass spectrometry

Description: Cisplatin and carboplatin are platinum-based drugs that are widely used in cancer chemotherapy. The cytotoxicity of these drugs is mediated by platinum-DNA monoadducts and intra- and interstrand diadducts, which are formed following uptake of the drug into the nucleus of cells. Solving the Accelerator-Condenser Coupling Problem in a Nanosecond Dynamic Transmission Electron Microscope

Description: We describe a modification to a transmission electron microscope (TEM) that allows it to briefly (using a pulsed-laser-driven photocathode) operate at currents in excess of 10 mA while keeping the effects of condenser lens aberrations to a minimum. Large N elliptic genus and AdS/CFT Correspondence

Description: According to one of Maldacena's dualities, type IIB string theory on AdS{sub 3} x S{sup 3} x K3 is equivalent to a certain N = (4, 4) superconformal field theory.
