Molten salt processing of mixed wastes with offgas condensation

Description: We are developing an advanced process for treatment of mixed wastes in molten salt media at temperatures of 700--1000{degrees}C. Waste destruction has been demonstrated in a single stage oxidation process, with destruction efficiencies above 99.9999% for many waste categories. Algorithmic chemistry

Description: In this paper complex adaptive systems are defined by a self- referential loop in which objects encode functions that act back on these objects. A model for this loop is presented. It uses a simple recursive formal language, derived from the lambda-calculus, to provide a semantics that maps character strings into functions that manipulate symbols on strings. Behavior of TPC's in a high particle flux environment

Description: TPC's (Time Projection Chamber) used in E-810 at the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron) were exposed to fluxes equivalent to more than 10{sup 7} minimum ionizing particles per second to find if such high fluxes cause gain changes or distortions of the electric field. Initial results of these and other tests are presented and the consequences for the RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) TPC-based experiments are discussed.

Sensitivity of numerical dispersion modeling to explosive source parameters

Description: The calculation of downwind concentrations from non-traditional sources, such as explosions, provides unique challenges to dispersion models. Genetic algorithms for DNA sequence assembly

Description: This paper describes a genetic algorithm application to the DNA fragment assembly problems. The genetic algorithm uses a random key representation for representing the orderings of fragments. Two different fitness functions, both based on pairwise overlap strengths between fragments, were tested. Method of calculating test leakage rate for a spent fuel cask

Description: This report presents a method for calculating containment test leakage rates of radionuclides from an example spent fuel cask. Three releasable radioactive sources are considered: residual contamination in the cask cavity, crud on the fuel elements, and the radionuclides within the fuel rods. The ANSI N14.5 standard is used to calculate the test leakage rates from the maximum permissible releases determined from 10 CFR 71 containment requirements. 6 refs., 2 tabs.

Description: We report on the current of our work on x-ray microcalorimeters for use as high resolution x-ray spectrometers. The CLEO collaboration has measured two body decay modes of D{sub s} involving {eta}, {eta}{sup 1} or {rho}{sup +}, using the new CLEO 2 detector. Burst mode FEL with the ETA-III induction linac

Description: Pulses of 140 GHz microwaves have been produced at a 2 kHz rate using the ETA-III induction linac and IMP wiggler. The accelerator was run in bursts of up to 50 pulses at 6 MeV and greater than 2 kA peak current. A time-frequency smoothing algorithm for cyclic spectral analysis

Description: A hybrid smoothing algorithm is described that smooths first in time and then in frequency. The time-frequency smoothing algorithm is designed to compute estimates of the cyclic (cross) spectrum along lines of constant cycle frequency. A variation on the algorithm, one that incorporates the One Bit Spectral Correlation Algorithm (OBSCA), is also described. A simulation study is presented that evaluates the algorithms.
