Zephyr: A secure Internet-based process to streamline engineering procurements using the World Wide Web

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is piloting an Internet- based paperless process called `Zephyr` to streamline engineering procurements. Major benefits have accrued by using Zephyr in reducing procurement time, speeding the engineering development cycle, facilitating industrial collaboration, and reducing overall costs. Programs at LLNL are benefiting by the efficiencies introduced since implementing Zephyr`s engineering and commerce on the Internet.

Sampling and analysis of sludge from the Hanford K East basin

Description: Sludge samples from the floor of the Hanford K East Basin fuel storage pool has been retrieved and analyzed. Both chemical and physical properties have been determined. The results are to be used to determine the disposition of the bulk of the sludge and possibly assess the impact of residual sludge on dry storage of the associated intact metallic uranium fuel elements.

Characterization of Hanford K basin spent nuclear fuel and sludge

Description: A characterization plan was prepared to support the Integrated Process Strategy (IPS) for resolution of the safety and environmental concerns associated with the deteriorating Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) stored in the Hanford Site K Basins. This plan provides the structure and logic and identifies the information needs to be supported by the characterization activities. The IPS involves removal of the fuel elements from the storage canister and placing them in a container, i.e., Multiple Canister … more

X-ray diagnostics of hohlraum plasma flow

Description: In this study we use spectroscopy and x-ray imaging to investigate the macroscopic plasma flow in mm-sized laser-produced hohlraum plasmas. By using multiple diagnostics to triangulate the emission on a single experiment, we can pinpoint the position of dopants placed inside the hohlraum. X-ray emission from the foil has been used in the past to measure electron temperature. Here we analyze the spatial movement of dopant plasmas for comparison to hydrodynamic calculations.

Pollution prevention through systems analysis

Description: Their needs to identify barriers that impede the implementation of pollution prevention (P2) and to develop ways to eliminate them. On a broad scale, this includes such barriers as inflexible procedures, pore specifications, and the `wrong` type of money. In industry, the potential expense and the complexity of processes together serve as a barrier to the exploration of P2 opportunities that involve significant process change. This paper addresses the latter barrier and presents systems analysi… more
