Higher order photon transitions in H-like and He-like ions.

Description: Higher order photon transitions such as M1, M2 and two-photon decay are conveniently studied using highly-charged electron ions. Here we discuss two examples from recent experiments which were done using the ATLAS facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The first is a test of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics involving a precision measurement of the spectral shape of the two-photon decay of the 1s2s{sup 1}S{sub 0} state in He-like nickel and the second is a test of the theory of damping in quantu… more

Analysis of the SL-1 Accident Using RELAPS5-3D

Description: On January 3, 1961, at the National Reactor Testing Station, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the Stationary Low Power Reactor No. 1 (SL-1) experienced a major nuclear excursion, killing three people, and destroying the reactor core. The SL-1 reactor, a 3 MW{sub t} boiling water reactor, was shut down and undergoing routine maintenance work at the time. This paper presents an analysis of the SL-1 reactor excursion using the RELAP5-3D thermal-hydraulic and nuclear analysis code, with the intent of simulat… more

Realizing parallel reduction operation in Sisal 1.2. Revision 1

Description: Often the tasks of a parallel job compute sets of values that are reduced to a single value or gathered to build an aggregate structure. Since reductions may introduce dependencies, most languages separate computation and reduction. For example, Fortran 90 and HPF provide a rich set of predefined reduction functions but only for extant arrays. Sisal 1.2 is unique in that it supports seven reduction operations as a natural consequence of loop expressions. These reductions are limited and cannot … more

1,2- Hydroxypyridonates as Contrast Agents for Magnetic ResonanceImaging: TREN-1,2-HOPO

Description: 1,2-Hydroxypyridinones (1,2-HOPO) form very stable lanthanide complexes that may be useful as contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). X-ray diffraction of single crystals established that the solid state structures of the Eu(III) and the previously reported [Inorg. Chem. 2004, 43, 5452] Gd(III) complex are identical. The recently discovered sensitizing properties of 1,2-HOPO chelates for Eu(III) luminescence allow direct measurement of the number if water molecules in the metal co… more

AFFECTS OF MECHANICAL MILLING AND METAL OXIDE ADDITIVES ON SORPTION KINETICS OF 1:1 LiNH2/MgH2 MIXTURE

Description: The destabilized complex hydride system composed of LiNH{sub 2}:MgH{sub 2} (1:1 molar ratio) is one of the leading candidates of hydrogen storage with a reversible hydrogen storage capacity of 8.1 wt%. A low sorption enthalpy of {approx}32 kJ/mole H{sub 2} was first predicted by Alapati et al. utilizing first principle density function theory (DFT) calculations and has been subsequently confirmed empirically by Lu et al. through differential thermal analysis (DTA). This enthalpy suggests that f… more

Electronic and magnetic structure of GaxFe1-x thin films

Description: The electronic as well as magnetic properties of Ga{sub x}Fe{sub 1-x} films were studied by soft x-ray measurements. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism the Fe majority-spin band was found to be completely filled for x {approx} 0.3. With further enhanced Ga content, the Fe moment as well as the angular dependence of the x-ray magnetic linear dichroism decrease strongly, which we attribute to the formation of D0{sub 3} precipitates. Moreover, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy drops significa… more

Experimental study of radium partitioning between anorthite and melt at 1 atm

Description: We present the first experimental radium mineral/melt partitioning data, specifically between anorthite and a CMAS melt at atmospheric pressure. Ion microprobe measurement of coexisting anorthite and glass phases produces a molar D{sub Ra} = 0.040 {+-} 0.006 and D{sub Ra}/D{sub Ba} = 0.23 {+-} 0.05 at 1400 C. Our results indicate that lattice strain partitioning models fit the divalent (Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra) partition coefficient data of this study well, supporting previous work on crustal melting an… more

X-ray diffractometry of lanthanum-nickel-aluminum alloys. Part 1

Description: X-ray diffractometry provides much useful information on LANA alloys that complements data obtained by SEM and Electron Microprobe Analysis. Accurate measurements of the hexagonal lattice parameters of the primary LaNi{sub 5-y}Aly phase reveal the aluminum content (y) and allow the prediction of desorption pressures for the hydrogen isotopes. A study of the broadening of x-ray diffraction lines of the LaNi{sub 5-y}Aly primary phase caused by cyclic absorption and desorption of hydrogen suggests… more

Higgs searches at the Tevatron, run 1 results and run 2 prospects

Description: Recent results from searches for the SM and SUSY Higgs bosons in Run 1 at the Tevatron have been shown. The sensitivity of the present SM Higgs searches at the Tevatron is limited by statistics leading to a reach in p{bar p} {r_arrow} VH production more than an order of magnitude higher than the SM prediction. The search for the neutral SUSY Higgs via p{bar p} {r_arrow} b{bar b}{psi} {r_arrow} b{bar b}b{bar b} excludes regions in the tan {beta} vs M{sub A} space which extend significantly those… more

Multivariable current control for electrically and magnetically coupled superconducting magnets. Revision 1

Description: Superconducting magnet systems under construction and projected for the future contain magnets that are magnetically coupled and electrically connected with shared power supplies. A change in one power supply voltage affects all of the magnet currents. A current controller for these system must be designed as a multivariable system. The power describes a method, based on decoupling control, for the rational design of these systems. Dynamic decoupling is achieved by cross-feedback of the measure… more

Optimizing performance of superscalar codes for a single Cray X1MSP processor

Description: The growing gap between sustained and peak performance for full-scale complex scientific applications on conventional supercomputers is a major concern in high performance computing. The recently-released vector-based Cray X1 offers to bridge this gap for many demanding scientific applications. However, this unique architecture contains both data caches and multi-streaming processing units, and the optimal programming methodology is still under investigation. In this paper we investigate Cray X… more

Visualizing 3D velocity fields near contour surfaces. Revision 1

Description: Vector field rendering is difficult in 3D because the vector icons overlap and hide each other. We propose four different techniques for visualizing vector fields only near surfaces. The first uses motion blurred particles in a thickened region around the surface. The second uses a voxel grid to contain integral curves of the vector field. The third uses many antialiased lines through the surface, and the fourth uses hairs sprouting from the surface and then bending in the direction of the vect… more

Coherent Synchrotron Radiation and Space Charge for a 1-D Bunch on an Arbitrary Planar Orbit

Description: Realistic modeling of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) and the space charge force in single-pass systems and rings usually requires at least a two-dimensional (2-D) description of the charge/current density of the bunch. Since that leads to costly computations, one often resorts to a 1-D model of the bunch for first explorations. This paper provides several improvements to previous 1-D theories, eliminating unnecessary approximations and physical restrictions.

ErbB2, but not ErbB1, reinitiates proliferation and induces luminal repopulation in epithelial acini

Description: Both ErbB1 and ErbB2 are overexpressed or amplified in breast tumors. To examine the effects of activating ErbB receptors in a context that mimics polarized epithelial cells in vivo, we activated ErbB1 and ErbB2 homodimers in preformed, growth-arrested mammary acini cultured in three-dimensional basement membrane gels. Activation of ErbB2, but not that of ErbB1, led to a reinitiation of cell proliferation and altered the properties of mammary acinar structures. These altered structures share se… more

Refractive Index and Hygroscopic Stability of Al(x)Ga(1-x)As Native Oxides

Description: The authors present prism coupling measurements on Al{sub x}Ga{sub 1{minus}x}As native oxides showing the dependence of refractive index on composition (0.3 {le} x {le} 0.97), oxidation temperature (400 {le} T {le} 500), and carrier gas purity. Index values range from n = 1.490 (x = 0.9, 400) to 1.707 (x = 0.3, 500 C). The oxides are shown to adsorb moisture, increasing their index by up to 0.10 (7%). Native oxides of Al{sub x}Ga{sub 1{minus}x}As (x {le} 0.5) have index values up to 0.27 higher… more

Properties of jets in Z events from 1.8 TeV {bar p}p collisions

Description: We have studied the properties of Z boson events produced in 1.8 TeV p{bar p} collisions using 19.3 pb{sup {minus}1} of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) during the 1992--1993 Tevatron run. We compare the characteristics of the hadronic jets associated with the Z to leading-order QCD calculations using the VECBOS Monte Carlo program. For a subsample of events, we identify B jets and compare their rates to those expected from events with generic QCD jets.
