Giant spin Hall effect in two-dimensional monochalcogenides

Description: This article, using calculations from first principles, reveals for the first time giant intrinsic spin Hall conductivities (SHC) in these materials. In particular, the article shows that the SHC resonances can be easily tuned by combination of strain and doping and, in some cases, strain can be used to induce semiconductor to metal transition that makes a giant spin Hall effect possible even in absence of doping.

Broadband Absorption in Patterned Metal/Weakly-Absorbing-Spacer/Metal with Graded Photonic Super-Crystal

Description: Article studying high light absorption in two devices: a stack of Au-pattern/insulator/Au-film and a stack of Au-pattern/weakly-absorbing-material/Au-film where the Au-pattern was structured in graded photonic super-crystal. Multiple-band absorption, including one near 1500 nm, in a stack of Au-pattern/spacer/Au-film was observed.

Influence of coherent population trapping on Raman scattering

Description: Article considering the Raman scattering in molecular media. Applying two laser fields in a two-photon resonance with vibrational transition, the authors study the role of rotational levels for excitation of vibrational coherence. It is shown that the molecular vibrational coherence strongly depends on the effect of coherent population trapping for rotational levels. The obtained results are important for applications of Raman spectroscopy to molecular detection in engineering, chemical, and bi… more

AFLOW-QHA3P: Robust and automated method to compute thermodynamic properties of solids

Description: Article introducing the quasiharmonic approximation three-phonon method to calculate the thermodynamic properties of both nonmetallic and metallic compounds. This study demonstrates that QHA3P is an ideal framework for the high-throughput prediction of finite-temperature material properties, combining the accuracy of QHA with the computational efficiency of SC-QHA.

The universal shape of the X-ray variability power spectrum of AGN up to z ∼ 3

Description: Authors of the article assert that they studied the ensemble X-ray variability properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) over large ranges of timescale (20 ks ≤ T ≤ 14 yr), redshift (0 ≤ z ≲ 3), luminosity (1040 erg s−1 ≤ LX ≤ 1046 erg s−1), and black hole (BH) mass (106 ≤ M⊙ ≤ 109). The authors show that the data collected from archival observations and previous literature studies are fully consistent with a universal PSD form, which does not show any evidence for systematic evolution of shap… more
