ZrH-reactor-technology program. Progress report, April-June 1974

Description: The report on the 2 kW(e) reactor-organic Rankine system was drafted. This report details the design parameters of a minimum weight, 2 kW(e) reactor-organic Rankine system. The system is designed for 5 years unattended life in space. The reactor produces 16.2 kW of thermal power with a NaK outlet temperature of 800/sup 0/F and a 200/sup 0/F ..delta..T. The reactor contains 19 fuel elements, 1.25'' in diameter by 10'' long, hydrided to an N/sub H/ of 6.35. The terrestrial applications effort was… more

Rain scavenging studies. Progress report No. 10

Description: Studies conducted over the last few years on the observations and measurements made in the field on 1 June 1970 are assembled and interpreted in terms of the modelling of convective shower systems and their scavenging patterns. The modelling of cloud microphysics in relation to precipitation generation and scavenging as well as convective system dynamics is also discussed. It is suggested that parameterizations of the microphysical processes and the fine-scale dynamics will probably have to be … more

Production of K0(S) lambda and gamma in 100-GeV/c pion proton interactions

Description: Results are presented on the production of K{sub s}{sup 0}, {Lambda} and {gamma} and {gamma} in 100 GeV/c {pi}{sup -}p interactions in the 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber at NAL. The cross sections for the production of {pi}{sup 0}, K{sub s}{sup 0}, {Lambda} and {bar {Lambda}} are derived and compared with those produced in other reactions as functions of the energy. The average number of {pi}{sup 0} produced per collision is the same as in 100 GeV/c pp reactions.

TEST OF A LIQUID ARGON CHAMBER WITH 20-u m RMS RESOLUTION

Description: A measurement of the spatial resolution of a liquid-argon filled chamber was performed with minimum ionizing particles. Two multi-strip chambers with 20-{micro}m strip spacing operating in the ionization mode were used in the experiment. They perform in accordance with a simple model based on electron diffusion. An estimate of the amount of electron diffusion in liquid argon is given and the time jitter distribution has a FWHM of 200 ns. Under best conditions, the spatial resolution is better t… more

Decommissioning of DMA equipment at Richland. Quarterly status report for period ending June 30, 1974

Description: The project is progressing under the authorizing November 12, 1973, TWX from AL to RL. It provides for removal of the retired equipment in the 234-5 Building, its packaging and burial suitable for 20-year retrieval. The building area affected will be decontaminated and made available for other purposes. Work is progressing on removal of the inspection equipment in Room 192 with two hoods having been detached from the conveyor head. No contamination exterior to the hoods has occurred. Preliminary safety analysis of the B-C Cribs Controlled Area. [Hanford Reservation]

Description: Approximately 2,000 acres of land in the center of the Hanford Reservation is contaminated with an estimated 14 Ci of /sup 137/Cs and 81 Ci of /sup 90/Sr associated with animal wastes. Approximately half of this activity is located on (or within) 2.5 centimeters of the ground surface. The source of the contamination was the B-C Cribs and trenches which were used as liquid radioactive waste disposal sites during the 1950's. The mechanism for movement of radionuclides from the disposal site to th… more

Radioactive debris from the Chinese nuclear test of June 17, 1974. [Measured at Richland, Washington]

Description: According to the news media, the Chinese People's Republic detonated a nuclear device estimated to have a yield between 0.2 and 1 megatons on June 17, 1974. Radioactive debris from this test was observed at the Richland, Washington laboratory on June 24, 1974, approximately seven days after this detonation. The radionuclide levels were extremely low and required 1000-minute counts on our most sensitive instruments for the measurement on air filters. After the initial observation, airborne radio… more

Environmental {sup 129}I Measurements

Description: Environmental levels of {sup 129}I and natural {sup 127}I have been measured by neutron activation analysis .on samples from throughout the United States at locations near and remote from release points . Highest {sup 129}I concentrations were observed near nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. Levels of {sup 129}I above natural iodine background were observed at all locations studied. The sample data establishes baseline levels of environmental {sup 129}I for the expanding nuclear industry.

Pion-pion scattering analysis of 205 GeV/c pi- p interactions in the NAL 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber

Description: A number of experiments at beam momenta below {approx} 25 GeV/c have yielded results on {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +} and {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup -} scattering cross sections, obtained by modified Chew-Low extrapolation techniques applied to the reactions {pi}{sup -}p {yields} {Delta}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{sup -}. They have applied these same techniques to a small sample (169 events) of the reaction {pi}{sup -}p {yields} p{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup -} obtained from a 48,000-photo exposure of the NAL 30-in… more
