Brief summary concerning strategic withholding (nuclear parsimony)

Description: This memorandum provides a brief summary on thoughts concerning `Strategic Withholding` (or perhaps, `Nuclear Parsimony`). It is chiefly meant to further support the view that there should be other significant doctrines besides `Brute-Force Retaliation`. The basic doctrinal argument is that it may be broadly disadvantageous to fire one`s missiles in equal, or `total` retaliation. It may be better to reply only softly, or not at all. The basic justification rests on an assumption of extended war… more

Heat Flow Research and Exploration for Geothermal Power Black Rock Desert, Nevada

Description: Measurements of heat flow near the earth's surface provide the most reliable boundary conditions to be employed in the calculation of models of subsurface temperatures and the spatial distribution of crustal sources of heat. The subsurface temperature and heat source distributions, in turn, have many broad implications in the explanation of several geologically-observed phenomena and must be considered in exploration for geothermal power. In this report, several aspects of modern heat flow rese… more

A Liquid-filled Proportional Counter

Description: We report properties of single-wire proportional chambers and multiple-wire ionization chambers filled with liquid xenon. Proportional multiplication is seen for anode fields > 10{sup 6} volts/cm (anode-cathode voltage> 1 kV for a 3.5-{micro}-diam anode wire). The efficiency for detecting ionizing radiation is {approx} 100%. The time resolution of the chambers is {+-} 10{sup -7} sec. We attained a spatial resolution of {+-} 15 {micro} with a multiwire ionization chamber, considerably bett… more

Liquid metal bearings technology for large, high-temperature, sodium rotating machinery. Development and test of high-temperature proximity probe for use in liquid sodium. Fourth topical report

Description: An inductance-type, proximity-probe system for measurement of bearing film thicknesses and shaft orbits in high-temperature, liquid-sodium environment has been developed, built and tested. The probe system is designed to operate at temperatures up to 1200/sup 0/F and gap range of 0.004'' to 0.080'', with good linearity over about three-quarters of the range, when using probe pairs connected in push-pull. The probes were tested extensively in both gas and sodium environments, culminating in a 68… more

LMFBR Blanket Physics Project progress report No. 2

Description: This is the second annual report of an experimental program for the investigation of the neutronics of benchmark mock-ups of LMFBR blankets. Work was devoted primarily to measurements on Blanket Mock-Up No. 2, a simulation of a typical large LMFBR radial blanket and its steel reflector. Activation traverses and neutron spectra were measured in the blanket; calculations of activities and spectra were made for comparison with the measured data. The heterogeneous self- shielding effect for $sup 23… more

ORBITAL SYMMETRY CONTROL IN THE NITRONE-OXAZIRIDINE SYSTEM.NITRONE PHOTOSTATIONARY STATES

Description: Recent the orbital symmetry rules have been shown to apply to hetero-atom systems such as nitrone thermal cycloaddition reactions and the thermal and photochemical aziridine ring cleavage at the C-C bond. The concerted photocyclization is disrotatory and the reverse thermal cleavage is conrotatory in these molecules with four {pi} electrons. In contrast to the azomethine ylide-aziridine system, the stereochemistry of the nitrone photocyclization to oxaziridine can only be observed on carbon and… more

Richland O2 R and D program. Annual summary report

Description: This summary report was prepared by RL Production Planning and Development Branch. It presents the status as of June 30, 1971 of 02 Process Development activities performed and sponsored by the Atlantic Richfield Hanford Company for the AEC Division of Production. Prior work, current accomplishments (during last half of FY 1971), and future work are covered. A summary of the Process Development costs is given on Page 4. A more detailed description of these activities is contained in ARHCO Annua… more

Sprayed PETN charges. Final report

Description: A project for the Air Force Special Weapons Center is to develop, test, and deliver thin explosive matrices on aluminum and/or copper foil Mylar laminates. This report briefly discusses problems encountered with the recording of manganin pressure gage data. Four tests were fired on November 5 and 6 as an early attempt at recording pressure and impulse from HE loads. Problems encountered during this series were noise on the manganin gage oscilloscope records induced from the capacitor discharge … more
