Distribution of Boron in Processing of Carnotite Concentrate

Description: It was desired to determine the distribution of boron in the various steps of the processing of domestic ore concentrates containing high percentages of boron. The experiments described in this report were directed toward that end. Summary of this report are: (1) a black oxide containing 0.6 ppm of boron was prepared from material containing 350 ppm; (2) less than 0.02% of the boron in the original material appeared in the black oxide; (3) the iron step did not remove appreciable amounts of bor… more

Graphite expansion committee meeting of June 6, 1947

Description: The gas thermometer in the F Pile has been overhauled and re-calibrated. The readings are still in agreement with the readings from the graphite thermocouples. A similar overhaul of the gas thermometer in the D Pile will be made during June. The progress of further outward bowing of Tube 2496-D can not be followed satisfactorily even though readings are obtained from both inlet and outlet ends of the tube. Preliminary results obtained from the one-tube mock-up suggest the possibility that the g… more

Investigation of contamination bearing algae in the Columbia River

Description: Recent discussions in the group have given rise to the problem of determining whether the beta contamination found in the Columbia River is carried by the algae which are found in the retention basin. The algae accumulate in the basin and apparently remain there longer than the retained water, and thus may be contaminated to a greater extent than the water itself.

An Isotope Effect in a Simple Chemical Reaction

Description: It has been found that the carbon dioxide obtained from the decarboxylation of singly-carboxyl labeled malonic acid is impoverished in the C{sup 14} label and that the acetic acid formed is correspondingly enriched.

Operating standards: Study of start up, physics measurements

Description: As a starting point for planning the physics measurements to be made during the start up of the pile, this memorandum describes a procedure for each of three cases, a large poisoned pile, running at power with a small unpoisoned pile but marking physics measurements with the large pile before going to power, and a similar case except that the physics measurements on the large pile are done after running with power on the small pile This memorandum should by no means be taken as a final proposal… more

Production of (Uranium) Tetrafluoride

Description: Production of tetrafluoride for the month of April was 49,400. New equipment installed late in March operated smoothly and the production was slightly over the rated capacity of the plant. Nickel ends were welded on to the steel reactor tubes to prevent corrosion at the cover joint and possible contamination of the product with iron. The nickel ends will also save considerable repair work on the tube ends. The magnesium trays for some of the reactors are beginning to crack at the sides from fre… more

Protective measures for personnel

Description: This document addresses radiation protection concerns for workers in the experimental laboratories and production plants where nuclear fission piles are being used. A broad in-depth discussion is provided based with the experiences gained in the Manhattan Project and being applied to contemporary activities. Discussion is thorough and encompasses control of external irradiations including alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron radiations; and control of radioactivity within the body by control of inha… more
