Verification station for Sandia/Rockwell Plutonium Protection system

Description: A verification station has been designed to confirm the presence of plutonium within a container module. These container modules (about 13 cm (5 in.) in diameter and 23 cm (9 in.) high) hold sealed food-pack cans containing either plutonium oxide or metal and were designed by Sandia Laboratories to provide security and continuous surveillance and safety. After the plutonium is placed in the container module, it is closed with a solder seal. The verification station discussed here is used to con… more

Field nondestructive assay measurements as applied to process inventories

Description: An annual process equipment holdup inventory measurement program for a plutonium processing plant was instituted by Rockwell Hanford Operations (Rockwell) at Richland, Washington. The inventories, performed in 1977 and 1978, were designed to improve plutonium accountability and control. The inventory method used field nondestructive assay (NDA) measurement techniques with portable electronics and sodium iodide detectors. Access to and movement of plutonium in work areas was curtailed during the… more

Reduction of radiation area project plan

Description: This plan deals with the overall reduction of outdoor surface radiation areas under Rockwell's jurisdiction. Four basic alternatives are identified which will reduce and/or stabilize radiation areas until long-term disposal decisions are made: (1) continued routine surveillance and maintenance; (2) reduction or elimination of effluent discharges; (3) improved site stabilization; and (4) site removal. The four major transport mechanisms at Hanford that are the primary forces for contaminati… more

Basalt stratigraphy - Pasco Basin

Description: The geologic history of the Pasco Basin is sketched. Study of the stratigraphy of the area involved a number of techniques including major-element chemistry, paleomagnetic investigations, borehole logging, and other geophysical survey methods. Grande Ronde basalt accumulation in the Pasco Basin is described. An illustrative log response is shown. 1 figure. (RWR)

Laboratory evaluation of an ion exchange process for removing cesium from Purex acid waste solutions

Description: A laboratory investigation was made of an ion exchange process for removing radioactive cesium from acidic Purex waste. Twenty-seven laboratory ion exchanger runs are reported. Parameters investigated include comparison of Zeolon-900, AW-500 and Duolite ARC-359 ion exchangers, pH of feed solutions, composition of sodium scrub solutions, composition of eluting solutions and overflow versus downflow elution. The cause and rate of zeolite degradation was investigated.

Millville Wind Turbine Generator: failure analysis and corrective design modification

Description: Fatigue cracks in the blade skins of the Millville Wind Turbine Generator were fractographically analyzed. It is believed they were caused by large flapwise deflections during a wind storm on December 4, 1978. The deflections caused the skin to buckle, which initiated rapidly growing fatigue cracks. Propagation continued to the leading edge, moving radially inward and outward along the leading edge radius. Communication between Rockwell and Millville resulted in a modified blade design which in… more

Plutonium in soil adjacent to Rocky Flats plant

Description: In 1975, lawsuits were filed claiming contaminated lands adjacent to the plant. Five remote as well as 89 sites on lands under litigation were sampled using four sampling techniques at each site. An additional 71 sites were sampled using the Rockwell International technique. No results approached the EPA proposed guideline screening level of 200 mCi/km/sup 2/, although numerous sites to the last of the plant exceed 2 d/m/g (10 mCi/km/sup 2/). (DLC)
