Wear of typical carbon-base sliding seal materials at temperatures to 700 degrees F

Description: Report presenting wear and friction studies to show the effects on performance of temperature, type of mating material, and minor composition changes in typical carbon seal materials. Most data were obtained at a surface speed of 10,000 feet per minute, a load of 1000 grams on a 3/16-inch-radius specimen, and temperatures up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. Wear of carbon seal materials increased rapidly with high temperatures. The effect of temperature on wear was reduced by using chromium-plated st… more

Further investigation of the feasibility of the freeze-casting method for forming full-size infiltrated titanium carbide turbine blades

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a method of casting full-size cermet turbine blades from titanium carbide. An extremely thick piece of titanium carbide was prepared with a small amount of binder, cast into a mold by vibration, centrifuged, and frozen to retain the shape of the mold. Densities and radiographs of the blade prior to infiltration were used as criteria for soundness.

Expanded Scale Process Development of the Electrolytic Production of Thorium From ThCl$sub 4$ in Externally Heated Electrolytic Cells

Description: The commercial feasibility of the electrolytic process for Th production has been demonstrated. The cell produced 7 lb. of good quality metal per hour. A cathode cooling system was developed. The major construction materials, Ni and graphite, were satisfactory. The process yield was 86%. (T.R.H.)

Metallurgical Examination of K-Loop Fuel Elements Resulting from Rupture Incident

Description: The first and third slugs downstream from the H-Loop ruptured and a piece of can wall from the ruptured slug were received from Pile Materials Sub-Section for metallurgical examination. The examination has been completed and the extent and type off aluminum corrosion which occurred on these samples has been determined.

Elevated-Temperature Fatigue Properties of Two Titanium Alloys

Description: Report presenting an investigation to evaluate the unnotched fatigue properties of two titanium alloys at elevated temperatures. A variety of temperatures were tested and the results are provided in tabular form and as curves of stress versus cycles to failure for each test temperature. Both alloys were found to have potential use at the temperature ranges investigated.

Interim Report Johnston Splined Shaft Deepwell Turbine Pump

Description: The deepwell turbine pumps employed in HAPO Separations Plants have, in general, given good service. However, they do have design weaknesses that were originally recognized as undesirable but which were accepted as a matter of expediency. In an effort to improve reliability and extend life expectancies of such pumps, development work has continued. This report describes the design and preliminary test results obtained with a deepwell turbine pump of improved design.

A Preliminary Study of the Mechanical Properties of M-388, An Aluminum - 1% Nickel Alloy

Description: M-388 is an aluminum alloy consisting of 2S aluminum with an addition of 1% nickel. Preliminary corrosion studies which were conducted by Dreley and by Dillon indicated that the material exhibited excellent resistance to intergranular type of corrosion in distilled water at temperatures of up to 350 C. The combination of a low thermal neutron cross-section and good corrosion resistance make M-388 alloy a candidate material for use in reactor process tubes and fuel element cans. The purpose of t… more
