Verification station for Sandia/Rockwell Plutonium Protection system

Description: A verification station has been designed to confirm the presence of plutonium within a container module. These container modules (about 13 cm (5 in.) in diameter and 23 cm (9 in.) high) hold sealed food-pack cans containing either plutonium oxide or metal and were designed by Sandia Laboratories to provide security and continuous surveillance and safety. After the plutonium is placed in the container module, it is closed with a solder seal. The verification station discussed here is used to con… more

Identification of Aircraft Tubing by Rockwell Test

Description: A large number of tests were made on tubes of 1025 and 4130X steel, in various diameters and wall thicknesses, and after diverse heat treatments. The Rockwell B scale was employed, as being the best suited to the ranges of hardness encountered. Only satisfactory chrome molybdenum tubes were found to show a hardness in excess of 90-B after normalizing.

Design and evaluation of Cities Service/Rockwell hydrogasification commercial plant

Description: This report covers a preliminary conceptual design and economic evaluation of a commercial scale plant capable of converting high-sulfur bituminous caking coal to a high-Btu pipeline quality SNG. The plant, which has a rated capacity of 250 Billion Btu per day SNG, is based on Cities Service/Rockwell hydrogasification technology. Two cases of plant design were examined to produce cost estimates accurate to +-25% in 1979 dollars. The base case, designed for moderate production of liquids (5.8% c… more

Identification of Aircraft Tubing by Rockwell Test

Description: Seamless steel tubing is today the principal material of construction for aircraft. The commercial grade of tubing containing about 0.10 to 0.20% carbon at first used is being superseded by two grades which are approved by the army and navy, and which are also becoming standard for commercial airplanes.

Evaluation of the Rockwell International flash-hydroliquefaction process. Final summary report

Description: At the request of the Department of Energy, UOP/SDC has evaluated the Rockwell Hydroliquefaction Process to determine the adequacy of the existing PDU data base and to assess the practicability and operability of the process. UOP/SDC conducted nine studies. Their findings follow: (1) A complete designed set of experiments must be run on the present PDU to make possible satisfactory analysis of the effects of variables especially the effect of diluents in the H/sub 2/ feed and the possibility of… more

Detection efficiency and dark pulse rate of Rockwell (SSPM) single photon counters

Description: This paper describes direct photon counting data on several pixels of the Rockwell SSPM detector array, about which absolute single photon detection efficiencies and time responses were reported previously by Kwiat et al. The new data shows a substantially larger efficiency, 85%, and suggests that damage in the optical fiber employed in the earlier data was responsible for the lower number, 70%. When the results of this paper are analyzed using reasonable assumptions, one concludes that several… more

Hanford reservation area worker census: a research report for the Rockwell Hanford Operations

Description: Highlights of the worker census show: nearly 15,000 workers are in or immediately adjacent to the area; there are 21 employers; measured from the Purex plant, 80% of the total work force is located east-southeast and southeast; again centered at Purex Plant, 7% of the work force is within 2 miles, 20% within 10 miles, and 55% within 12 miles; the largest single concentration of Hanford Area workers, 38%, is found 17 to 19 miles from the Purex Plant center; informed sources estimate that another… more

Hydraulic model analysis of water distribution system, Rockwell International, Rocky Flats, Colorado

Description: Rockwell International requested an analysis of the existing plant site water supply distribution system at Rocky Flats, Colorado, to determine its adequacy. On September 26--29, 1988, Hughes Associates, Inc., Fire Protection Engineers, accompanied by Rocky Flats Fire Department engineers and suppression personnel, conducted water flow tests at the Rocky Flats plant site. Thirty-seven flows from various points throughout the plant site were taken on the existing domestic supply/fire main instal… more

Nondestructive measurements in support of Waste Isolation Pilot Plant at Rockwell Hanford Operations: problems and methods

Description: The 234-5Z Analytical Laboratory, located in the 200 West Area of the Hanford Site, has been requested to provide waste package measurement capability for both the Plutonium/Uranium Extraction (PUREX) Plant and Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) in support of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC). The requested WIPP values are sensitive to changes in isotopic distribution. Unfortunately, the determination of the isotopic distribution of an individual waste item or … more

Semi-annual report, summary of Rockwell International - Energy Systems Group contribution. [LMFBR]

Description: In the decontamination task, emphasis during this report period was on determining the effect of various sensitization conditions on the metal removal rate for various stainless steel alloys, using the reference decontamination process. An accurate prediction of metal removal rate is necessary to determine the optimum process time. Results to date indicate that alloys exposed to sodium at reactor conditions show a higher metal removal rate than the same types of alloys exposed to equivalent tim… more
