UV action spectra for mammalian systems: their implications for the predicted effects of ozone depletion on skin cancer incidence

Description: The predicted environmental effect of UV-B depend on the action spectrum for the response studied. Since such spectra change rapidly - usually decreasing with increasing wavelength - and since the biological effects depend on the product of the action spectrum and the sun's spectrum at the surface of the earth which decreases with decreasing wavelength, a slight change in action spectrum will markedly influence the predicted effects of ozone depletion on biological systems. Thus, the key, but b… more

Characterization of carbonaceous materials using extraction with supercritical pentane

Description: The use of carbonaceous adsorbents is limited by irreversible adsorption of some compounds so the use of supercritical pentane as an extracting solvent was examined. Carbon black appeared to be broken down slowly, but continuously, by the penane. To see if other types of carbon behaved similarly, high purity graphite, technical grade graphites, active carbons, and charcoals were examined. The extracts were characterized by uv spectroscopy, packed column chromatography using flame ionization and… more

Calculations of increased solar UV fluxes and DUV doses due to stratospheric-ozone depletions

Description: Accurate radiative transfer calculations are performed in the middle ultraviolet spectral region for aerosol-loaded atmospheres with the goal of determining the solar irradiance at the ground and quantifying the irradiance perturbations due to the presence of aerosols and various ozone depletions. The extent of the increase of UV-B radiation as a function of wave-length and solar zenith angle is calculated for five model atmospheres. In addition, the damaging ultraviolet dose rates and radiatio… more

Review of the ultraviolet studies of galactic novae

Description: The ultraviolet studies of galactic novae both in outburst and also in quiescence have provided new and fundamental data on these exploding stars. As a direct result of the IUE spectral studies, we have identified a new class of novae in which the outburst occurs on an ONeMg white dwarf. We have also been able to determine ejected masses, elemental abundances, and ultraviolet light curves for a wide variety of nova outbursts. 70 refs.

GC/MS characterization of condensable tars in the output stream of a stirred fixed-bed gasifier

Description: The output stream of the stirred fixed-bed gasifier at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center was sampled for total entrained material. A major portion of the entrained material, in addition to particles, is condensable tar that is subsequently removed from the process gas by wet scrubbing. Characterization of the entrained materials, specifically the tar, is important to establish contaminant levels and to evaluate performance of downstream cleanup units. Samples of tars were collected from t… more

New generation of monitors for PAH's from synthetic fuel production

Description: A gap exists between the crude techniques available for measuring polynuclear aromatic (PNA) compounds in the workplace, and the sophisticated analytical tools used in the laboratory for a much more complete characterization of pollutants from synfuel operations such as coal, tar sand, and oil shale processing. Real-time or near-real instruments suitable for use by industrial hygienists are urgently needed to measure fugitive emissions. Several new instruments and instrumental techniques are de… more

Interaction of a sub-bituminous coal with a strong acid and a strong base

Description: The interaction of a Wyoming subbituminous coal with molten phosphoric acid containing catalytic additives, and also with molten sodium hydroxide containing catalytic additives, has been studied at 200/sup 0/C under hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. Treated coal was recovered from the melt by dilution with water and subsequent filtration. Phosphoric acid treatment resulted in a product that had phosphorus incorporated into the organic coal matrix (up to 2.4 wt% in 4 hr). The products showed lit… more

Correlations Between Structure, Spectra, and Thermodynamics in Solutions of Cobalt Chloride in Sodium Tetrachloroaluminates

Description: An EMF technique using the cell Co/CoCl{sub 2} {minus} Na AlCl{sub 4}//(AgCl)x {minus} NaAlCl{sub 4} (x fixed)/Ag was used to measure the solubility of CoCl{sub 2} in NaCl{center dot}AlCl{sub 3} melts. The changes in EMF as a function of changes in melt composition were correlated with changes in the UV-Vis spectra of the dissolved cobalt species. From these data the microscopic structural contributions to the macroscopic thermodynamic properties of the solutions were estimated. 14 refs., 5 fig… more

WZ Sge: An accretion test case

Description: WZ Sge provides us with an excellent test for numerical codes trying to reproduce the heating and cooling of a white dwarf due to accreted material. This is because of both the many observed quantities of this binary and its long quiescent state. However, a large discrepancy appears between the observed white dwarf's cooling curve and calculated cooling curve from the deduced accreted mass. Possible causes for this discrepancy are discussed.

Photochemistry of 1 and 2-(2-methylphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene. [4a-methyl-1,2,3,4,4a,9,10,10a-octahydrophenanthrene]

Description: In an attempt to synthesize partially saturated phenanthrene derivatives by an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction between a photochemically produced o-xylylene (diene) and a tethered dienophile, it was found that 1 and 2 underwent a photochemically allowed (2 + 2) cycloaddition. Irradiation of 1 gave 6-(2-methylphenyl)bicyclo(3.2.0)heptane in 86% yield. Upon irradiation of 2, a benzvalene rearrangement of 2 first took place, producing the meta isomer 2-(3-methylphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene, followed… more

Search for promethium-like gold lines and other transitions of interest to fusion research

Description: EUV spectra in the range lambda = 13 to 40 rm were measured for foil-excited gold ions at 31 to 238 MeV. Data was recorded at the higher energies to extend and to complement previous measurements and at the lowest energy to see if the recently predicted 5s - 5p resonance lines in the Pm-like ion, Au XIX, could be seen in beam-foil excitation. The experimental results are presented, previous beam-foil measurements are reviewed, and the contributions and relations to fusion research are discussed. more

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-protein interactions. Progress report, March 1, 1979-February 28, 1980

Description: As bovine serum albumin (BSA) undergoes acid- or base-induced conformational changes, the binding of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) to BSA, as well as the type II uv fluorescence (380 nm) due to pyrene-like oxidation products, increases. The presence of fatty acids also enhances the binding of BaP to BSA at neutral pH, whereas the visible fluorescence of BaP is effectively quenched by fatty acids. L-Tryptophan, which is specifically bound to BSA, enhances the BaP binding and particularly the formation of… more

(Catalytic mechanism of hydrogenase from aerobic N sub 2 -fixing microorganisms)

Description: The results of this DOE-sponsored project have contributed to our understanding of the catalytic mechanism of A. vinelandii hydrogenase. A group of inhibitors have been characterized. These provide information about the different types of redox clusters involved in catalysis and the roles of each. One group has already used acetylene in a study of three desulfovibrian hydrogenases and shown that only the NiFe hydrogenases are inhibited. We have characterized a number of spectral properties of A… more

PW Vul: A classical nova with nearly solar abundances

Description: Ultraviolet and optical spectrophotometric data were combined in order to determine the physical parameters in the expanding shell of Nova PW Vul 1984 No. 1. Ultraviolet data were obtained with the IUE satellite from August 2, 1984 (a few days after discovery) until it became too faint to study with the satellite. The last IUE exposure was obtained in June 1988 but we have continued to follow it with ground-based optical telescopes. We will present a plot that shows the variation of electron de… more

Late stages in the evolution of classical novae

Description: We have begun a study of the long term evolution of novae in outburst in order to determine the means by which they return in quiescence when nuclear burning has ended. This project involves both IUE and optical observations and theoretical predictions. Recently, in the initial observational part of this project, we have obtained IUE SWP spectra of GQ Mus 1983 and QU Vul 1984. Each spectrum was a 16 hour exposure using a combined US1 plus Vilspa shift. No novae have been studied in the UV for a… more
