Rigid muffin-tin approximation for the electron-phonon interaction in transition metals

Description: Progress in calculating the electron-phonon parameters of transition metals has been based on either the rigid muffin-tin approximation (RMTA) or the fitted modified tight-binding approximation (FMTBA). The RMTA has been shown to be remarkably accurate for average electron-phonon properties, but there are indications that RMTA matrix elements may be too small at low momentum transfer. Description: The mill tailings site at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania is the first mill site to receive remedial action under the Department of Energy's Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Program. Part of this remedial action will require excavating the 53,500 m/sup 3/ (70,000 yd/sup 3/) of tailings on the site having a specific activity exceeding 100 pCi/g, and encapsulating these contaminated tailings in a clay-lined cell. Description: Fuel particles for the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) contain layers of pyrolytic carbon and silicon carbide, which act as a miniature pressure vessel and form the primary fission product barrier. Catalytic steam gasification of bagasse for the production of methanol

Description: Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) tested the catalytic gasification of bagasse for the production of methanol synthesis gas. Magnetic excitations in transition-metal ferromagnets. Recent progress and future prospects on neutron scattering experiments

Description: A review is given on current neutron scattering experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory on transition-metal ferromagnets Ni, Fe, Pd/sub 2/MnSn and MnSi. The scattering intensity in constant-energy scans, observed above T/sub c/ in all of these materials, exhibited a clear peak at finite momentum transfers. Description: Laboratory work was continued on hydriding of zirconium sponge and rod under varying conditions of temperature (400 to 900/sup 0/C) and pressure (0-1000 torr) to determine optimum conditions for the formation of hydrides with desirable mechanical properties. Description: Solder fatigue tests have been conducted on point focus photovoltaic concentration cell assemblies to identify a baseline fatigue life and to quantify the fatigue life improvements that result using a copper-molybdenum-copper low-expansion insert between the solar cell and copper heat spreader. Recovery of platinum from concentrated sodium chloride brine by electrodeposition on vitreous carbon

Description: The voltammetric characteristics of Pt(II) and Pt(IV) have been examined at a vitreous carbon electrode in slightly acidic 3M (approx. 15 wt %) NaCl solutions. Pt(IV) is reduced to Pt(II) at approx. 0 V and Pt(II) is reduced to Pt(0) at approx. -0.5 V vs Ag-AgCl. The rate of deposition of platinum metal at -0.5 V is very low on bare carbon, but increases as the coverage of platinum increases.
