KINETIC EXPERIMENTS ON WATER BOILERS-"A" CORE REPORT-PART II. ANALYSIS OF RESULTS

Description: The status of the analytic portion of the KEWB program at the time of completion of the spherical core experiments is summarized. Three computer programs were developed for use in this analytic effort. The first reassembles and smooths three decades of reactor power data read separately from oscillogram records of reactor excursions. It then computes the logarithmic derivative of the power, energy release, fuel solution temperature, and temperature compensated reactivity. The second program uti… more

Neutron induced current pulses in fission chambers. [LMFBR]

Description: The mechanism of neutron induced current pulse generation in fission chambers is discussed. By application of the calculated detector transfer function to proposed detector current pulse shapes, and by comparison with actually observed detector output voltage pulses, a credible, semi-empirical, trapezoidal pulse shape of chamber current is obtained.

Error Analysis of Acceleration Control Loops of a Synchrotron

Description: For beam control during acceleration, it is conventional to derive the frequency from an external reference, be it a field marker or an external oscillator, to provide phase and radius feedback loops to ensure the phase stability, radial position and emittance integrity of the beam. The open and closed loop behaviors of both feedback control and their response under the possible frequency, phase and radius errors are derived from fundamental principles and equations. The stability of the loops … more

A Simulation of the EGCR Steam Generator

Description: An analog model of the EGCR steam generator was developed and operated on the ORNL analog computer as part of a program to simulate the operation and control of the EGCR reactor plant. Equilibrium operation and the transient response of the steam generator unit to system perturbations were studied. A simultaneous solution of the basic heat transfer equations representing the performance of the unit was obtained. The model was operated initially at steady- state conditions, and then perturbation… more

POWER-TO-VOID TRANSFER FUNCTIONS

Description: Variations in the distribution of steam bubble, the "void" distribution, in a boiling channel as a function of changes in heating power were studied. A rectangular test tube, of 1.11 x 4.44-cm cross section and 127-cm height, was inserted in a forced-circulation pressure loop. The tube was heated by passing an a-c current through the tube walls. A power oscillator was built which could give a 10% peak-topeak sinusoidal power modulation at any frequency in the interval from 0.01 to 10 cps. Varia… more

Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant Analog Simulator.

Description: The steady-state and dynamlc characterlstics of the Pathfinder systems were simulated on a dual-console Pace Analog Computer. The derivation of the system equations, the assumptions involved, their numerical evaluation, and their conversion to analog circuitry are described. The Pathfinder system is unique because of the internal nuclear superheater, and controlled, forced recirculation. In simulating this system the following major assumptions were maden the reactor is a boiling-water type; mo… more

Quarterly Status Report on LAMPRE Program for Period Ending August 20, 1961

Description: BS>All basic experiments planned for the LAMPRE I startup program were completed. The tests included operation at 100 and 200 kw utilizing both normal and half coolant flow, and full flow operation at 400 kw. At each power level, transfer function measurements were made, and a continuous run of approximately 60 hr duration was carried out to determine the characteristics of the reactivity loss first observed at 50 kw. Various power demand tests were made. Fuel and container development was cont… more

DENBIG and DARN. Codes for the reduction of digital pinex data

Description: Code DENBIG was written to reduce the digital pinex data received from the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) experiments. Output modes are density plots, contour plots, splatter plots, equivalent radius calculations, line cuts, and reduced data in matrix form. Provisions are included to incorporate subtraction of dry-run data, transfer function corrections, and pinhole absorption corrections. Code DARN processes pinex data in which electromagnetic pulse shifts h… more

Plasma position dynamics of ISX tokamak

Description: Perturbation equations of a tokamak plasma equilibrium position have been developed. Neglecting second and higher order effects, oscillatory high frequency solution is obtained, and an approximated low frequency plasma motion dynamics transfer function is derived. This function allows a manageable study of a tokamak plasma equilibrium position stability and practical syntheses of the associated plasma position feedback control systems. One of the major parameters governing plasma equilibrium po… more

A Mechanism Explaining the Instability of EBR-I, Mark III

Description: Presented at the International Atomic Energy Agencysponsored Seminar on the Physics of Fast and Intermediate Reactors. Vienna, August 3-11, 196l. A feedback model, was developed to account for resonant instabilities in the Mark II core. In this model, the prompt positive power coefficient effect is ascribed to fuel rod bowing and the delayed negative power coefficient effect to thermally lnduced motions in the lower shield plate. Since this model is supported by observations, it is concluded th… more

Intermediate simulation of the inverse seismic problem

Description: An introductory study of the inverse seismic problem is performed. The complex cepstrum of a seismogram generated by the convolution of three factors, the Seggern-Blandford source function of an explosion, the Futterman mantle transfer function, and the SRO seismometer transfer function, is used. For a given Q and yield, a synthetic seismogram is computed. Arbitrary values of Q and yield are introduced, and a search is conducted to find that pair of values that minimized the cepstral difference… more

Intrinsic-surface-tag image authentication

Description: The objective of this work is to further the development of a unique treaty limited item (TLI) intrinsic surface tag for arms control applications. This tag's unique feature is the ability to capture the sub-micron scale topography of the TLI surface. The surface topography is captured by plastic castings of the surface as digitally imaged by an electron microscope. Tag authentication is accomplished by comparing digital castings images obtained in two different inspections. Surface replication… more

NMR measurements in SSC dipole D00001

Description: The first 16.5 m long SSC dipole magnet (D00001) had its field intensity measured as a function of position with a custom made NMR magnetometer. A short description of the probe is presented. The data obtained (most of it near 2 T spaced apart by one inch) shows an average transfer function of 1.02830 T/KA with position dependent values deviating from the average by up to .00130 T/KA revealing contruction inhomogeneities that were measured with a sensitivity of 25 ppM.

SUMMARY OF HRT RUN 21

Description: The HRT was operated experimentally during run 2l at powers up to 5 Mw to explore the limiting conditions of fuel stability and to demonstrate the reliability of the system. The effect of core pressure on fuel stability was investigated over the range from l250 to 1750 psig. Stable operation at 5 Mw (2.6 Mw in the core) was demonstrated at 1250 psig. At 1600 and 1750 psig, fuel instability accompanied by rapid loss of reactivity occurred at powers down to 2.5 Mw. The threshold power for reactiv… more
