Prospects for physics at e/sup +/e/sup -/ linear colliders

Description: The present thinking on high-energy e/sup /plus//e/sup /minus// linear colliders is reviewed, stressing those points that have consequences for detector design and physics analyses. Detector requirements are discussed. Experimental aspects of the physics that can be done at these colliders are discussed: first the general physics environment, then a standard process, W/sup /plus// W/sup /minus// detection, and finally four examples of the discovery potential of these colliders /emdash/ heavy qu… more

Prospects of physics at CDF with the SVX

Description: During next physics run CDF will strongly enhance its heavy flavor tagging capabilities with the installation of a silicon vertex detector (SVX), that will allow precise measurements of secondary decay vertices in the plane transverse to the beam (impact parameter resolution {approx equal} 12 {mu}m). We expect this detector to have a significant impact on b-physics (c{tau}{sub B} {approx equal} 350 {mu}m) and top search. In the following we will discuss CDF prospects for top search and for CP v… more

Hadron-hadron physics at high energy and luminosity

Description: I review some recent theoretical issues relevant to the physics of hadron-hadron collisions. I discuss processes where either energy or luminosity is the most important feature and emphasize the need for experiments at luminosities of 10{sup 33}cm{sup -2}sec{sup 1} if the full range of physics options is to be thoroughly explored. 22 refs., 10 figs.

Production and decay of heavy top quarks

Description: Experimental evidence indicates that the top quark exists and has a mass between 50 and 200 GeV/c{sup 2}. The decays of a top quark with a mass in this range are studied with emphasis placed on the mass region near the threshold for production of real W bosons. Topics discussed are: (1) possible enhancement of strange quark production when M{sub W} + m{sub s} < m{sub t} < M{sub W} + m{sub b}; (2) exclusive decays of T mesons to B and B{asterisk} mesons using the non-relativistic quark model; (3… more

T,b, and new particle searches at p p colliders

Description: Experiments at the p{bar p} colliders at CERN and FNAL have an active program of heavy flavor physics. Recently, CDF at FNAL and UA1 at CERN have measured rare decays of the {Beta}{sup 0} {minus} {bar {Beta}}{sup 0} mixing. CDF has signals for {Beta}{sup {plus minus}} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup {plus minus}} and {Beta}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *0}. Both CDF and UA1 have set limits on the branching ratio of {Beta}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} and have measured {Beta}{sup 0} {minus… more

Prospects for top at CDF

Description: During the next two years, the Fermilab Tavatron is expected to deliver approximately 100pb{sup {minus}1} of integrated luminosity. We describe improvements to the CDF detector since the 1988--89 collider run and discuss the prospects for the discovery of the top quark during the 1992--93 collider runs.

Top quark and light Higgs scalar mass bounds in no-scale supergravity

Description: No-scale supergravity theories with the minimal low-energy particle content are shown to become untenable for a top quark mass m/sub T/ much less than 40 GeV. For m/sub T/ < 55 GeV, a stringent upper bound operates on the mass of the lowest-lying Higgs scalar. Further, the Higgs pseudoscalar is constrained to be nearly a quarter as massive as the gluino.

Heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders

Description: The search for the top quark has dominated heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders. For Standard model decay of top the present mass limit in m{sub t} > 89 GeV (95% C.L.). Bottom production cross sections are quite large at hadron colliders, thus providing enough statistics for extensive studies. Results on cross sections, B{sup 0} {minus} {bar B}{sup 0} mixing, exclusive channels and rare B decays will be summarized.

Physics issues for the next linear collider

Description: This article surveys the physics issues to be studied at future e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} colliders, especially in the energy region below 500 GeV. Particular emphasis is given to standard model studies -- precision measurements of the dynamical properties of W bosons and top quarks -- as well as the search for evidence of the Higgs sector.

W mass and W asymmetry at CDF

Description: The lepton charge asymmetry from W decaying into a lepton and a neutrino is discussed (preliminary result). This measurement gives information on parton distribution functions at low x values. The derivation of the recently published W mass value of 79.91 {plus minus} 0.39 GeV/c{sup 2} is also presented. M{sub W} is used to set an upper limit on the top quark mass. 13 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Top physics at CDF

Description: We present here preliminary results of an extension of our already published search for the top quark. The search is based on a data sample collected during the 1988--1989 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb {sup {minus}1}. We find no evidence for top quark production and we establish preliminary limits on the t-tbar production cross section as a function of the top mass (M{sub top}) in p-pbar collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. Using theore… more

CDF: Recent results and future prospects

Description: We present recent results from the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Searches for the top quark have established a lower bound of M{sub top} > 91 GeV/c{sup 2} (at 95% confidence level). A measurement of B{sup o}{bar B}{sup o} mixing has been obtained from b{bar b} {yields} e{mu}, ee events. Measurements of b-quark production have been obtained from e + X events and J/{psi} + K events. The mass of the W boson has been determined to be M{sub W} = 79.91 {plus minus} 0.39 GeV/c{sup 2}. Recent results from the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) experiment at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider

Description: Recent results from the CDF experiment are described. The Standard Model gives a good description of jet production, and W/Z production and decay. There is no evidence yet for the top quark, for fourth generation quarks, or for deviations from the Standard Model ascribable to quark substructure, supersymmetric particles, or heavy additional W-like or Z-like bosons. Limits are given where applicable. A search for a light Higgs Boson is also described. 11 refs., 24 figs.

From elastic scattering experiments at the Tevatron, an average value of {sigma}{sub tot} = 72.1{plus minus}2 mb is reported, along with a new measurement of {rho} = 0.13 {plus minus} 0.7. New measurements of jet direct photon and high p{sub t} W and Z production are compared to more precise, higher order predictions from perturbative QCD. Recently available data on the W mass and width give combined values for M{sub W} = 80.14{plus minus}0.27 Ge… more
