Radiological assessment report for the Lansdowne property, 105-107 East Stratford Avenue, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, October-December 1984

Description: Areas with elevated levels of radioactivity were found throughout both residences, as well as on the surrounding property. Contamination was also found in the garage behind the 105 East structure. The 105 East residence had substantially more contamination than the 107 East residence, as was expected. The chimneys, particularly the rear chimney, from the 105 East residence had extensive contamination, indicating that contaminated materials may have been burned at the site. The high background r… more

Minimum detectable activities of contamination control survey equipment

Description: The Instrumentation External Dosimetry (I ED) Section of the Health Physics Department at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) has performed a series of tests to determine the ability of portable survey instruments used at Hanford to detect radioactive contamination at levels required by DOE 5480.11. This semi-empirical study combines instrumental, statistical, and human factors as necessary to derive operational detection limits. These threshold detection values have been compared to existin… more

Energy response and dose-rate calibration of a Geiger-Mueller gamma-ray detector

Description: To obtain more precise dose-rate measurements, we have taken a commercial gamma-ray dosimeter that uses a Geiger-Mueller (GM) tube as its detector and, by supplying it with an externally regulated high voltage, counted the gamma-ray-induced pulses with suitable scaling and timing circuits. We have now improved the method of calibration by measuring detector response to 13 different sources, each with an independently verified strength, in the energy range from 60 keV to 2.6 MeV. With the use of… more

Environmental surveillance data report for the third quarter of 1987

Description: During the third quarter of 1987, over 1600 samples which represent more than 5000 analyses and measurements were collected by the Environmental Monitoring and Compliance (EMC) Department. Uranium concentrations measured on air filters near the Y-12 plant were higher than normal due to a release from that facility in May. More than 60% of the noncompliances with the NPDES permit for the third quarter occurred in July. These were primarily in total suspended solids at the Sewage Treatment Plant.… more

Ocean floor sediment as a repository barrier: comparative diffusion data for selected radionuclides in sediments from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

Description: Effective diffusion coefficients for selected radionuclides have been measured in ocean floor sediments to provide data for the assessment of barrier effectiveness in subseabed repositories for nuclear waste. The sediments tested include illite-rich and smectite-rich red clays from the mid-plate gyre region of the Pacific Ocean, reducing sediment from the continental shelf of the northwest coast of North America, and Atlantic Ocean sediments from the Southern Nares Abyssal Plain and the Great M… more

Biomedical and environmental aspects of the thorium fuel cycle: a selected, annotated bibliography

Description: This bibliography was compiled to assist in the evaluation of the health and environmental consequences of high specific activity thorium and related nuclides which could be released to the environment by activities related to the Thorium Fuel Cycle. The general scope covers studies regarding potential releases, environmental transport, metabolism, dosimetry, dose assessment, and overall risk assessment for radionuclides specific to the NASAP project. This publication of 740 abstracted referenc… more

Isotopic Generator for /sup 212/Pb and /sup 212/Bi

Description: A large potential exists for the use of short lived alpha emitting isotopes for therapeutic purposes. Most prior research has been performed with isotopes such as /sup 211/At which require a cyclotron for production. It obviously would be more convenient to use a long lived isotopic generator system. For this reason, we have undertaken a study of the properties of several such generators, one of which, /sup 228/Th, is described here.

Analysis of Rocky Flats soils for six radionuclides by a sequential method

Description: A method for the sequential analysis of Rocky Flats soils for six actinides of interest was developed to facilitate the large number of radionuclide analyses. The isotopes determined were: /sup 238/U, /sup 235/U, /sup 234/U, /sup 232/Th, /sup 230/Th, /sup 228/Th, /sup 237/Np, /sup 239/240/Pu, /sup 241/Am, and /sup 244/Cm. The method included addition of tracer isotopes for each actinide, pyrosulfate fusion to help solutize minerals and decompose organic matter, sequential separation by cation a… more

Anticipated radiological impacts from the mining and milling of thorium for the nonproliferative fuels. [Dose commitments to individuals and populations from inhalation or ingestion of thorium-cycle-related radionuclides]

Description: Recent emphasis on proliferation-resistant fuel cycles utilizing thorium--uranium-233 fuels has necessitated evaluation of the potential radiological impact of mining and milling thorium ore. Therefore, an analysis has been completed of hypothetical mine-mill complexes using population and meteorological data representative of a thorium resource site in the Lemhi Pass area of Idaho/Montana, United States of America. Source terms for the site include thorium-232 decay chain radionuclides suspend… more

Implications of the ICRP Task Group's proposed lung model for internal dose assessments in the mineral sands industry

Description: The ICRP Task Group on Respiratory Tract Models for Radiological Projection is proposing a model to describe the deposition, clearance, retention and dosimetry of inhaled radionuclides for dose-intake calculations and interpretation of bioassay data. The deposition model takes into account new data on the regional deposition of aerosol particles in human lung and the inhalability of large particles. The clearance model treats clearance as competition between mechanical transport, which moves pa… more

Description: The results of a radiological survey of the former Horizons, Inc., metal handling facility in Cleveland, Ohio, are presented in this report. During the 1940's and early 1950's, two of the three buildings on this site (Buildings B and C) were used for the production of granular thorium metal. The survey included measurements related to the following: fixed and transferable alpha and beta-gamma contamination levels on the surfaces in Buildings B and C and on the roofs of these buildings; external… more

Poisson regression analysis of mortality among male workers at a thorium-processing plant

Description: Analyses of mortality among a cohort of 3119 male workers employed between 1915 and 1973 at a thorium-processing plant were updated to the end of 1982. Of the whole group, 761 men were deceased and 2161 men were still alive, while 197 men were lost to follow-up. A total of 250 deaths was added to the 511 deaths observed in the previous study. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for all causes of death was 1.12 with 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.05-1.21. The SMRs were also significantly i… more

Letter to Eduard Smetanin, Dated March 2, 2007: Final Crada Report.

Description: The IPP/DOE program office has finished its evaluation of the alpha-emitting isotope work with Kurchatov Institute and IPPE, and they have made an important decision about the future of this work. IPP/DOE has directed us to re-program the work and add more funds, so the emphasis will be on production of Th228. By making this re-direction of the isotope work, IPPE will see several important benefits: (a) the payments will be made faster to IPPE by using the ISTC Agreement; (b) a larger amount of… more
