Severe accident core heatup transients in modular high temperature gas-cooled reactors without operating Reactor Cavity Cooling Systems

Description: The ultimate decay heat removal system for the current Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled reactors is a completely passive natural convection air cooling loop. This paper considers an extremely remote accident scenario, where even this passive system fails, and heat rejection is only via a layer of thermal insulation to the reactor silo structure and the surrounding soil. The results show that even in this case the peak fuel temperatures remain well within safe limits. However, vessel and conc… more

Transient Temperature Distributions in a Thermally Orthotropic Plate With Non-Uniform Surface Heating

Description: ent temperature variation in a thermally orthotropic plate which is subjected to an arbitrary heating rate distribution along one face with all other surfaces being insulated. Dimensionless temperature histories and distributions determined from this solution are presented for the special, but representative, case of a linearly varying heating rate distribution on plates with varying degrees of thermal orthotropy. These results establish quantitatively the value of a material with high planar a… more

Investigation of Celotex trademark charring depths in the DT-18 shipping container

Description: Celotex {trademark}, the insulating material used between the outer and inner containers of the DT-18 shipping package, undergoes decomposition, combustion, or both when heated to temperatures exceeding 150{degrees}C. Several DT-18 packages that had previously undergone hypothetical thermal accident testing were opened and Celotex {trademark} charring depths ranging from {1/2} to 1 {1/2} in. were recorded. The majority of char depth data taken was between 3/4 and 1 {1/4} in. One-dimensional HEA… more

FAST BREEDER REACTOR THERMOCOUPLE DEVELOPMENT.

Description: Studies of very high-temperature thermocouple characteristics for instrumentation and electrical components used in fast breeder reactors showed that the thermoelectric emf produced along BeO, HfO{sub 2}, or ThO{sub 2} insulators can affect the output of the thermoelements. Bare-wire thermocouples are influenced by environment. Radiation effects on W versus W - Re thermocouples in the ORR after ~ 2 months in a 1.2 x 10{sup 14}n/cm{sup 2}-sec thermal and 2.1 x 10{sup 13}n/cm{sup 2}-sec fast flux… more

Simple empirical method for estimating the performance of a passive solar heated building of the thermal storage wall type

Description: Two methods are presented for estimating the annual solar heating performance of a building utilizing a passive thermal storage wall of the Trombe wall or water wall type with or without night insulation and with or without a reflector. The method is accurate to +-3% as compared with hour-by-hour computer simulations.

Heat Transfer With Laminar Flow in Concentric Annuli With Constant and Arbitrary Variable Axial Wall Temperature

Description: An analysis has been performed to determine the heat transfer characteristics for laminar forced-convection flow in a concentric annulus with prescribed surface temperatures. Three distinct problems were considered: (a) wall temperature prescribed at both the inside and outside wall; (b) inside wall temperature prescribed and the outside wall insulated; and (c) inside wall insulated and outside wall temperature prescribed. The solution for temperature distribution was similar to that obtained b… more

Corrosion testing of urea-formaldehyde foam insulating material

Description: Two tests of the corrosiveness of urea-formaldehyde (UF) foam insulating materials were compared. One test, the Timm test, had test coupons foamed in place. In the second, the Canadian test, blocks of foam already set were placed in contact with test coupons. The Timm test uses 10 gage thick coupons, while the Canadian test specifies 3 mil thick ones. Two samples of UF foam were tested by the Timm and the Canadian tests. The electrical-resistance probes showed that the corrosion rate against st… more

Studies of evaporative and conventional cooling of an energy conserving California house

Description: For cooling a Sacramento, California home, (1) higher thermostat settings, (2) insulation (3) ''solar control'' window shades, and (4) the use of an evaporative cooler in the place of a vapor compression cycle air conditioner are studied. A computer program TWOZONE is used to evaluate the effect on energy consumption and peak power. It is calculated that the peak cooling load can be reduced by a factor of 5 or more and the total energy by a factor of 20 or more.

Description: Climatological data, both representative (typical) and extreme conditions, relevant to building energy use in Grandview, Missouri are presented. The energy-related characteristics of a particular building and its use are merged with ambient weather conditions. The graphs depict daily fluctuations in the major categories of building heating/cooling load for the experimental building (Roof Runner facility) at Butler Research Center. Data input include hourly weather and building occupancy schedul… more

Investigation of the fire performance of building insulation in full-scale and laboratory fire tests

Description: Twenty-two insulations are exposed to fire tests including the 25 ft Tunnel test, the Attic Floor Radiant Panel test and actual fire conditions of a simulated attic configuration. The insulations consisted of a number of cellulose fiber insulations, utilizing various chemical treatments, glass fiber and mineral fiber insulations. The fire performance characteristics of the insulations were measured in each of the three test scenarios and the report compares their results.

Sulfur hexafluoride transfer and storage system of the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility: some thermodynamic properties

Description: The transfer of SF/sub 6/ insulating gas from the 25 MV accelerator pressure vessel (volume = 80,000 ft/sup 3/) into liquid storage tanks (volume = 6,000 ft/sup 3/) is accomplished by means of two three-stage piston compressors operating in parallel. Gas from the first and second compression stages is passed through heat exchangers prior to injection into subsequent stages while gas from the third stage is cooled and/or liquified by a third exchanger/condenser. Tabulated thermodynamic data were… more

Description: An interdisciplinary approach towards a detailed assessment of energy consumption in urban space-heating and cooling is presented in terms of measurement and modeling results. Modeling efforts concentrated on the city of Minneapolis, MN, using data from the winter seasons 1977/78 and 1978/79. Further developments of a reference model also fall back on data from Cheyenne, WY, and Greeley, CO. Mean absolute daily errors of gas consumption estimated by the physical model applied to Minneapolis are… more
