COMP: a BASIC language nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program

Description: COMP is an interactive nonlinear least squares routine written in BASIC language and used to obtain estimates of parameters in nonlinear functions and to approximate their associated statistical errors. The program uses the linearizing (or Taylor Series) expansion of partial derivatives outlined in Draper and Smith, (1966, pp. 267 to 270). Therefore, partial derivatives must be supplied (as well as the function) by the user for any new models not currently contained in the programs. When a lineā€¦ more

Statistical magnetohydrodynamics and reversed-field-pinch quiescence

Description: A statistical model of a bounded, incompressible, cylindrical magnetofluid is presented. This model predicts the presence of magnetic fluctuations about a cylindrically-symmetric, Bessel-function-model, mean magnetic field, which satisfies del x <B> = ..mu.. <B>. As theta ..-->.. 1.56, the model predicts that the significant region of the fluctuation spectrum narrows down to a single (coherent) m = 1 mode. An analogy between the Debye length of an electrostatic plasma and ..mu../sup -1/ suggestā€¦ more

Stochastic model of radioiodine transport

Description: A research project has been underway at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory with the objective to evaluate dose assessment models and to determine the uncertainty associated with the model predictions. This has resulted in the application of methods to propagate uncertainties through models. Some techniques and results related to this problem are discussed.

Geostatistics project of the national uranium resource evaluation program. Progress report, October 1979-March 1980

Description: During the period covered by this report, the authors investigated the serial properties of aerial radiometric data. Results were applied to the choice of minimum segment width in the maximum variance segments algorithm and to the use of aerial radiometric data in the design of ground sampling experiments. The report also presents the results of a comparison of normal and lognormal percentile estimation techniques. Twenty-two quadrangles are being analyzed in the search for a uranium favorabiliā€¦ more

The International Coal Statistics Data Base program maintenance guide

Description: The International Coal Statistics Data Base (ICSD) is a microcomputer-based system which contains information related to international coal trade. This includes coal production, consumption, imports and exports information. The ICSD is a secondary data base, meaning that information contained therein is derived entirely from other primary sources. It uses dBase III+ and Lotus 1-2-3 to locate, report and display data. The system is used for analysis in preparing the Annual Prospects for World Coā€¦ more

Estimates of the number of large amplitude gusts

Description: Preliminary estimates are presented of the number of occurrences of large amplitude gusts for use in the design of wind energy conversion systems. Existing turbulence information has been combined with an assumed wind speed distribution to arrive at the estimates. The number of large amplitude gusts per year is treated as a function of the annual mean wind speed and terrain roughness. This treatment is based upon the assumptions that the atmosphere has neutral stability during high winds and thā€¦ more

The Measurement of Energy and Intensity of Gamma Rays by Use of a Scintillation Spectrometer

Description: The analysis of gamma-ray spectra measured with a scintillation counter with an anticoincidence annulus is described in detail. In particular the problem of the determination of the energy and intensity of gamma rays from such measurements is considered. The shapes of the full-energy peaks in observed complex spectra are studied and an attempt is made to justify their description in terms of a Gaussian response function. The details of the statistical analysis of complex gamma-ray spectra are gā€¦ more

Statistical relationship between median visibility and conditions of worst-case manmade impact on visibility

Description: A study was conducted of the statistical relationships between median visibility and the levels of visibility associated with worst-case manmade impacts. The data base for the study consisted of midday visibility recordings for the years 1974-1976 at 28 suburban/nonurban airports throughout the United States. The visibility recordings were converted to estimates of extinction coefficients with the use of the Koschmeider formula. The data were sorted according to meteorology in order to eliminatā€¦ more

An analysis of residential energy consumption in a temperate climate

Description: Electrical energy consumption data have been recorded for several hundred submetered residential structures in Middle Tennessee. All houses were constructed with a common energy package.'' Specifically, daily cooling usage data have been collected for 130 houses for the 1985 and 1986 cooling seasons, and monthly heating usage data for 186 houses have been recorded by occupant participation over a seven-year period. Cooling data have been analyzed using an SPSSx multiple regression analysis and ā€¦ more

Robust estimates of location called compromise estimates. Progress report

Description: Two types of robust estimates of location, psi-compromised M-estimates and gap-compromised estimates, are discussed and compared via a simulation. The relationships between the two types of estimators are seen to depend on both the sample size and the underlying distribution of the data. 11 figures, 6 tables.

Physics Division Summary Report

Description: The use and operation of the 4.5-Mev Van de Graaff generator ts descrtbed. Sputtering experiments were conducted by bombarding single crystals of electrolytic copper wtth deuterons with energies of 0.8 to 2.5 Mev. The experimental results are discussed on the basis of existing sputtering theories. The kinetic-energy distribution and Boltzmann "temperatures" of most of the fragments of cyanogen under electron impact were determined. A lower limit of 0.05 ev for this temperature'' was also determā€¦ more

Concept of a (1-. cap alpha. ) performance confidence interval

Description: A multi-input, single-output system is assumed to be represented by some model. The distribution functions of the input and the output variables are considered to be at least obtainable through experimental data. Associated with the computer response of the model corresponding to given inputs, a conditional pseudoresponse set is generated. This response can be constructed by means of the model by using the simulated pseudorandom input variates from a neighborhood defined by a preassigned probabā€¦ more

Dose-rate models for human survival after exposure to ionizing radiation

Description: This paper reviews new estimates of the L/sub 50/ in man by Mole and by Rotblat, the biological processes contributing to hematologic death, the collection of animal experiments dealing with hematologic death, and the use of regression analysis to make new estimates of human mortality based on all relevant animal studies. Regression analysis of animal mortality data has shown that mortality is dependent strongly on dose rate, species, body weight, and time interval over which the exposure is deā€¦ more

THE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN FOR BeO IRAADIATION EXPERIMENTS ORNL 41-8 AND ORNL 41-9

Description: The experimental plan for irradiating BeO pellets in Experiments ORNL 41- 8 and ORNL 41-9 was chosen in accordance with the principles of experimental design. The design is known by statisticians as a 2/sup 5/ factorial experiment confound'' in six replications. Five variables---size, density, grain size, temperature and time--are controlled at two levels to form the basic 2i factorial experiment. The sixth variable, neutron flux, is introduced by confounding on higher-order interactions. An exā€¦ more

Evaluating late detection capability against diverse insider adversaries

Description: This paper describes a model for evaluating the late (after-the-fact) detection capability of material control and accountability (MCandA) systems against insider theft or diversion of special nuclear material. Potential insider cover-up strategies to defeat activities providing detection (e.g., inventories) are addressed by the model in a tractable manner. For each potential adversary and detection activity, two probabilities are assessed and used to fit the model. The model then computes the ā€¦ more
