Modified Purification System Performance Test. Core 1, Seed 2. Test Results T-641124-A. Section 2

Description: The effectiveness of purification in controlling plant radioactivation rates was determined through comparison of the actual effects produced from plant operation with and without purification. With the purification system in service, there was no appreciable difficulty in maintaining the reactor coolant within reference water specifications. In addition, there was no discernible increase of crud deposition in the coolant system as determined by direct radiation measurements of the purification… more

Cost Function Studies for Power Reactors

Description: A function to evaluate the cost of electricity produced by a nuclear power reactor was developed. The basic equation, revenue = capital charges + profit + operating expenses, was expanded in terms of various cost parameters to enable analysis of multiregion nuclear reactors with uranium and/or plutonium for fuel. A corresponding IBM 704 computer program, which will compute either the price of electricity or the value of plutonium, is presented in detail. (auth)

Innovative approach to asbestos removal

Description: The most common asbestos materials used at the Savannah River site include: steam pipe insulation; powerhouse boiler insulation; wallboards; roofing materials; and cement products. Asbestos was also found in a number of other materials: aprons; gaskets; laboratory hot pads; and talcum powder used for gloves. Techniques for removal; personnel training; mechanical ventilation; and personnel isolation techniques are described for completing asbestos removal safely and without boiler downtime. (PSB) more

STUDIES IN MICROMERITICS. II. THE DEPOSITION OF PARTICLES IN CIRCULAR CONDUITS DUE TO THERMAL GRADIENTS

Description: The deposition of particles from turbulent gas streams due to thermal gradients was predicted using a simplified flow medel. In the medels particle concentration was assumed constant in the turbulent region. The particle deposition velocity was taken to be the radial velocity of thermal - repulsion in the laminar sublayer. Temperature gradients in the laminar sublayer were calculated for constant wall temperature using the Reynoldss analogy. The loss magnilude of suspended particles from loss d… more

Department of Energy Nuclear Energy Standards Program

Description: The policy with respect to the development and use of standards in the Department of Energy (DOE) programs concerned with maintaining and developing the nuclear option for the civilian sector (both in the form of the currently used light water reactors and for advanced concepts including the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor), is embodied in a Nuclear Standards Policy, issued in 1978, whose perspectives and philosophy are discussed.

Proofreading: for want of a nail

Description: This report presents only the text of a tape-slide half-hour unit that outlines beginning approaches to proofreading. The presentation was designed primarily for typist-compositors needing first-time or review training. The presentation stresses value and need for accurate proofing, and highlights some basic techniques, special danger areas, copy mark-up, and distinguishing between Greek and Roman alphabets.

H-Area Seepage Basins

Description: During the third quarter of 1990 the wells which make up the H-Area Seepage Basins (H-HWMF) monitoring network were sampled. Laboratory analyses were performed to measure levels of hazardous constituents, indicator parameters, tritium, nonvolatile beta, and gross alpha. A Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) scan was performed on all wells sampled to determine any hazardous organic constituents present in the groundwater. The primary contaminants observed at wells monitoring the H-Area Se… more

Management and organizational assessments: a review of selected organizations

Description: This report is part of a larger project designed to assist the NRC in its responsibilities for assessing the management and organization of utilities applying for an operating license for a nuclear power plant. This report reviews the processes and criteria used by other organizations that conduct management and organization audits and evaluations. It was undertaken in order to provide data and a basis for future analysis by taking a comparative perspective. When considering changes in criteria… more

Evaluation of Subsize Izod Specimen Designs for Determining the Notch Toughness of Zircaloy-2

Description: Correlations were made on Zircaloy-2 Izod impact data and Charpy-V drop- weight data. Subsize Izod impact specimens of various geometries and notch configurations and standard ASTM Charpy-V specimens were prepared from bar and plate stock and tested. Drop-weight tests were also conducted and the NDT (nil- ductility transition) temperature was determined for 1/2 in. Zircaloy-2 plate. Results show that the impact properties of Zircaloy-2 are sensitive to hydrogen concentration, specimen and notch… more

Impact of selected energy conservation technologies on baseline demands

Description: This study is an application of the modeling and demand projection capability existing at Brookhaven National Laboratory to specific options in energy conservation. Baseline energy demands are modified by introducing successively three sets of conservation options. The implementation of improved building standards and the use of co-generation in industry are analyzed in detail and constitute the body of this report. Two further sets of energy demands are presented that complete the view of a lo… more

Absolute polarization standards at medium and high energies. [200 to 900 MeV]

Description: Although measurement of a polarization asymmetry is rather easy, the normalization of the measurement to obtain the analyzing power requires an absolute knowledge of the beam polarization or comparison with a known standard analyzing power. Such calibration standards can be hard to find. This paper concentrates on medium and higher energies, and divides the techniques into four categories: double scattering, polarized target methods, polarized source methods, and theoretical methods. Secondary … more

Planning for the next generation of standard electronics

Description: Recommendations of a committee for a new standard to meet needs of new high-energy physics experiments are summarized in a nontechnical manner. Existing standards, including CAMAC, were examined; it was felt that none would meet the future needs of high-energy physics. The original committee gave its recommendations and disbanded. The design committee has begun its work; it anticipates finishing in about two years, in time for application of its recommendations to ISABELLE. (RWR)

Savannah River Site computing architecture migration guide

Description: The SRS Computing Architecture is a vision statement for site computing which enumerates the strategies which will guide SRS computing efforts for the 1990s. Each strategy is supported by a number of feature statements which clarify the strategy by providing additional detail. Since it is a strategic planning document, the Architecture has sitewide applicability and endorsement but does not attempt to specify implementation details. It does, however, specify that a document will be developed to… more
