The multipulse Thomson scattering diagnostic on the DIII-D tokamak

Description: This paper describes the design and operation of a 40-spatial channel Thomson scattering system that uses multiple 20 Hz Nd:YAG lasers to measure the electron temperature and density profiles periodically throughout an entire plasma discharge. Interference filter polychromators disperse the scattered light which is detected by silicon avalanche photodiodes. The measurable temperature range from 10 eV to 20 keV and the minimum detectable density is about 2 {times} 10{sup 18} m{sup {minus}3}. Las… more

Electron heating and confinemet measurements in EBT-S using Thomson scattering

Description: Thomson scattering of ruby laser light was used to measure electron temperatures and densities in the ELMO Bumpy Torus-Scale (EBT-S) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Requirements and new materials for fusion laser systems

Fast optical shutters for Nova, a high power fusion laser

Description: Preliminary design and performance test results for fast optical shutters intended for use in the Nova high power fusion laser system are briefly described. Both an opening shutter to protect the pellet target from amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), and a closing shutter to protect the laser from light reflected back from the target are discussed. 25 megajoule energy storage and delivery system for the Shiva laser

Description: A 25 megajoule, 20 kV capacitive energy storage and delivery system has been built and tested for Shiva--a 20 arm, 10 kJ, 20 TW neodymium glass fusion research laser. Materials testing using laser energy deposition

Description: A convenient method for determining the elastic constants of materials has been devised using the energy from a Q-switched neodymium-glass laser. Stress waves are induced in materials having circular rod or rectangular bar geometries by the absorption of energy from the laser. Beam transport optics for laser fusion

Description: The performance of large laser systems for laser fusion is limited by self-induced damage to optical components, arising from the interaction of the intense light with the optical materials in the laser system. In the design of the beam transport optics, due consideration must be given to high intensity effects, including self-focusing, surface damage, and internal reflection focusing. High energy electron spectra from 1. 06. mu. m laser produced plasmas

Description: An electron spectrometer has been modified to measure 1.06 ..mu.. laser produced electrons in the 0.2 to 1.0 MeV range and has been used extensively at the LLL Argus laser facility. We observe a strong correlation between laser pulse width and the amplitude of electron spectral emission from imploded D-T filled microspheres.

Uniform laser ablative acceleration of targets at 10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/

Description: We present the first detailed investigations of the ablative acceleration of planar targets while simultaneously using high irradiance (10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/), large focal diameters (1 mm) and long laser pulse duration (3 nsec). Included are measurements of target preheat, ablation pressures and uniformity achieved under these conditions. Targets were accelerated to high velocities with velocity profile uniformity approaching that required for high gain pellet implosions.

Pinhole imaging of laser-produced thermonuclear alpha particles

Description: Results of pinhole images of thermonuclear alpha particles generated by exploding pusher targets in the Argus laser facility are reviewed. Recorded images indicate that the reactions occur within a 25 to 30 micron region with twelve micron resolution for ten micron pinholes and thirty micron resolution for twenty-five micron pinholes. Optical diagnostics on dense Z-pinch plasmas

Description: A novel point-diffraction'' interferometer has been implemented on the Los Alamos Solid Fiber Z-Pinch experiment. The laser beam is split into two legs after passing through the plasma.
