A Theoretical Study of the Transient Operation and Stability of Two-Phase Natural Circulation Loops

Description: Mathematical models of the time-dependent behavior of two-phase natural- circulation loops were used to predict the operation and to explain the unusual instability sometimes observed. The initial results obtained for a loop similar to the Univ. of Minnesota loop were used to formulate a more complex and accurate model, and the predicted transient behavior was in close agreement with the experimental results from the Minnesota loop. For a 300psia, high-pressure loop, unstable oscillatory behavi… more

Vacuum system problems of EBT: a steady-state fusion experiment

Description: Many of the vacuum problems faced by EBT will soon be shared by other plasma devices as high-power microwave systems and long pulse lengths become more common. The solutions used on EBT (such as the raised lip with elastomer seal) are not unique; however, experience has shown that microwave-compatible designs must be carefully thought out. All details of the vacuum must be carefully thought out. All details of the vacuum must be carefully screened in advance to insure that microwaves do not lea… more

AN ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE PERCENTAGE OF HELIUM BYPASSING THE CORE DUE TO THE REFLECTOR SEALING SYSTEM DURING NORMAL OPERATION OF THE HTGR

Description: The percentage of helium which will bypass the core if the reflector system shown is used is predicted. It is estimated that nominally about 0.1 to 0.2% of the total flow will bypass the core, which is not considered excessive. The most difficult parameter to determine was Z, the gap between the sealing surfaces. The method used to predict Z is presented. The effect of bowing due to a temperature gradient across the seals is discussed. (auth)

Helium/solid powder O-ring leakage correlation experiments using a radiotracer

Description: UO/sub 2/ definitely leaked past the O-ring in three of the tests confirming the major results of the previous work. Continuous leakage at these levels may require additional precautions under present regulatory policies. The mechanism and the time and particle size dependence for the leakage are not known, but there is some indication leakage is more likely at low temperatures. It is possible leakage is due to movement of the O-ring during temperature or pressure cycling at the beginning or en… more

Barium silicate glass/Inconel X-750 interaction. [PWR]

Description: Water reactor safety programs at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory have required the development of specialized instrumentation. An example is the electrical conductivity-sensitive liquid level transducer developed for use in pressurized-water reactors (PWRs) in which the operation of the sensing probe relies upon the passage of current through the water between the center pin of the electrode and its shell such that when water is present the resulting voltage is low, and conversely, wh… more

Measurement and effect of the critical gas saturation and relative permeability on the production of methane from geopressured aquifers of saturated brine

Description: The attempt to measure critical gas saturation at pressures in the range of 5000 to 10,000 psi failed. It proved impossible, with the funds and time available, to conclude a successful suite of experiments. The problem was centered on the inability to maintain adequate seals on the end plates of the apparatus. Numerical simulation confirmed that the level of critical gas saturation required for methane to be produced profitably from geopressured aquifers was unrealistically high. Most of the wa… more
