Photoinduced Charge Separation by Polymer-Bound Chromophores

Description: This project has examined the photodynamic behavior of water-soluble polymers that have covalently linked hydrophobic chromophores spaced along the chains. Exploring novel silicon-containing polymers---From preceramic polymers to conducting polymers with nonlinear optical properties

Description: Several new types of silicon-containing preceramic polymers, i.e., poly(diorganosilacetylene) and poly(diorganosilvinylene) have been synthesized with molecular weights from 10,000 to 120,000. Measurement of energy deposited by charged-particle beams in composite targets

Description: We have measured the energy deposited in two types of composite targets by a number of charged-particle beams: targets made of /sup 238/U, Lucite, and polyethylene were exposed to 0.26-GeV protons and 0.33-GeV deuterons, and aluminum-Lucite composites were exposed to 0.5-GeV electrons. CRITICAL EXPERIMENTS FOR THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF THE ARGONNE HIGH FLUX REACTOR

Description: Critical experiments were performed with two assemblies simulating a cold clean, and an end-of-cycle,- Argonne High Flux Reactor, core. Data were obtained for flux distributions; cadmium ratios; temperature and void coefficients; and control rod, beam hole, and reflector worths. Protective coatings and sealants for solar applications

Description: An aging study has been completed which evaluated a number of polymeric materials for potential use as (1) protective coatings for back surfaces of mirrors and (2) solar heliostat edge seals. These investigations were conducted in an artificial weathering chamber that accelerated thermal cycling. The primary mirror failure mode was observed to be silver corrosion resulting from moisture exposure. Tritium storage development. Progress report No. 12, April--June 1977. [In metal hydride; polymer impregnated tritiated concrete]

Description: Laboratory work was continued on hydriding of zirconium sponge and rod under varying conditions of temperature (400 to 900/sup 0/C) and pressure (0-1000 torr) to determine optimum conditions for the formation of hydrides with desirable mechanical properties. Permeability damage to natural fractures caused by fracturing fluid polymers

Description: Formation damage studies using artificially fractured, low-permeability sandstone cores indicate that viscosified fracturing fluids can severely restrict gas flow through these types of narrow fractures. These studies were performed in support of the Department of Energy's Multiwell Experiment (MWX). Size selective synergism by crown ethers in the extraction of alkali metals by di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid

Description: Although the macrocyclic polyethers, known as crown ethers, complex metal ions and do so preferentially according to the size correspondance between the ion and the crown ether cavity, their usefulness as liquid-liquid extraction reagents has been limited by the necessity of solubilizing the anion in the organic phase.
