Radionuclides in plankton from the South Pacific Basin

Description: We have initiated an investigation of the utility of marine plankton as bioconcentrating samplers of low-level marine radioactivity in the southern hemisphere. A literature review has shown that both freshwater and marine plankton have trace element and radionuclide concentration factors (relative to water) of up to 10/sup 4/. Stochastic model of radioiodine transport

Description: A research project has been underway at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory with the objective to evaluate dose assessment models and to determine the uncertainty associated with the model predictions. Irradiation experiment for lithium ceramics

Description: Solid breeder materials are required in D-T fusion reactor blankets to convert fusion neutrons to tritium and thermal energy while providing some neutron shielding for the magnets. Lithium compounds such as Li/sub 2/O, LiAlO/sub 2/, Li/sub 4/SiO/sub 4/ and Li/sub 2/ZrO/sub 3/ have been proposed as solid breeder materials. Tritium half-life

Description: Least squares analyses of calorimetric measurements made at Mound Laboratory on two tritide compounds over a period of 18 y were performed to determine the half-life of tritium. A half-life of 12.3232 +- 0.0043 mean solar years was obtained.

Energy dependence of metallic-encapsulated thermoluminescent dosimeters. Annual report

Description: The gamma-ray energy responses of encapsulated /sup 7/LiF and CaF/sub 2/:Mn thermoluminescent dosimeters were measured and compred to calculated values. This study was performed in order to improve the accuracy of gamma-ray heating measurements made in polyenergetic gamma-ray fields such as Argonne National Laboratory's Zero Power Reactors. Tellurium interference in /sup 129/I activation analysis

Description: Measurement of /sup 129/I at low levels is required for effluent control, environmental assessment and tracer studies in the natural environment. The bioenergetics of salt tolerance

Description: The aim of this project was to try to understand the adaptive mechanisms that organisms develop in order to respond to a sudden transformation in their environment to a salt shock.'' Nuclear magnetic resonance study of metallic scandium chlorides

Description: The /sup 45/Sc nuclear magnetic resonance was studied in samples having the general composition CsSc/sub x/Cl/sub 3/ (0.67 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) in the CsCl-ScCl/sub 3/-Sc system. Hydrology and geochemistry of thermal ground water in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada

Description: The study area occupies about 14,500 square miles in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada. Thermal ground water occurs under artesian conditions, in discontinuous or compartmented zones, in igneous or sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. Ground-water movement is generally northward. Radiochemical analyses of samples from beneath a solid radioactive waste disposal pit at Los Alamos, New Mexico

Description: Solid radioactive wastes are disposed of by burial in pits excavated in rhyolite tuff at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL). Contaminants in the waste include fission products, uranium, and transuranic elements. In 1976, horizontal core holes were drilled beneath a waste disposal pit that was used from 1963 to 1966. Description: Laboratory work was continued on hydriding of zirconium sponge and rod under varying conditions of temperature (400 to 900/sup 0/C) and pressure (0-1000 torr) to determine optimum conditions for the formation of hydrides with desirable mechanical properties. Description: A continuous duty cryopump system was designed and developed that comprises a self-contained cryopump for installation into a vacuum chamber, and a microprocessor controller for automatic operation. Description: Our research at Yale on the fate of nuclides in natural water systems has three components to it: the study of the atmospheric precipitation of radionuclides and other chemical species; the study of the behavior of natural radionuclides in groundwater and hydrothermal systems; and understanding the controls on the distribution of radionuclides and stable nuclides in the marine realm. Photodisintegration of /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He. [Threshold to 25 MeV]

Description: The photoneutron cross sections for /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He have been measured from threshold to approx. 25 MeV with monoenergetic photons from the annihilation in flight of fast positrons at the LLL Electron-Positron Linear Accelerator facility. Cesium-137 source material for an irradiator

Description: The feasibility of using /sup 137/Cs for the gamma source in sludge irradiators is discussed.
