Comparative assessment of energy-economy interactions

Description: This analysis is concerned with the impact of energy-policy measures on the level, growth, and structure of the US economy. In particular, the nature and magnitude of the causal relationship between variations in the prices of various energy forms and economic performance, as measured by real gross national product (GNP), is studied. The combined Brookhaven National Laboratory/Dale W. Jorgenson Associates (BNL/DHA) energy-economy model system is used to determine the economic effects of three e… more

Testimony on coal research needs to the House Subcommittee on Energy Development and Applications

Description: Discussions of this paper and interactions with the coal research community lead to the following conclusions on the future and needs for coal research: The coal resource in the USA is immense and a plan for optimum use of the peat to anthracite supplies should be developed and evolved. Coal research efforts in industry are rapidly decreasing and work at universities, technology centers and national laboratories is directly dependent on federal funding. Industrial emphases will shift to combust… more

Economic assessment of alternative energy policies

Description: Current US energy policy includes many programs directed toward the restructuring of the energy system so as to decrease US dependence on foreign supplies and to increase our reliance on plentiful and environmentally benign energy forms. However, recent events have led to renewed concern over the direction of current energy policy. This study describes three possible energy strategies and analyzes each in terms of its economic, environmental, and national security benefits and costs. Each strat… more

Distributed micro-releases of bioterror pathogens : threat characterizations and epidemiology from uncertain patient observables.

Description: Terrorist attacks using an aerosolized pathogen preparation have gained credibility as a national security concern since the anthrax attacks of 2001. The ability to characterize the parameters of such attacks, i.e., to estimate the number of people infected, the time of infection, the average dose received, and the rate of disease spread in contemporary American society (for contagious diseases), is important when planning a medical response. For non-contagious diseases, we address the characte… more

14-MeV Neutron Generator Used as a Thermal Neutron Source

Description: One of the most important applications of the general purpose Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNPS and MCNPX) codes is neutron shielding design. We employed this method to simulate the shield of a 14-MeV neutron generator used as a thermal neutron source providing an external thermal neutron beam for testing large area neutron detectors developed for diffraction studies in biology and also useful for national security applications. Nuclear reactors have been the main sources of neutrons used for scien… more
