Bag model, the hyperspherical formalism and the heavy baryons

Description: The bag model framework is used to discuss the heavy baryons, triple flavored objects like ccc, cbb, etc. A nonrelativistic picture seems justified. It is insisted that the long-range interaction consist of a genuine three-body force. Once the potential energy of the three quarks is determined, the three-body Schroedinger equation is solved by the method of hyperspherical expansion. 1 table. (RWR)

Di-leptons at the Bevalac

Description: Recent results on the production of di-leptons measured by the Di-Lepton-Spectrometer (DLS) collaboration are discussed. Results are reported from observations made on p /plus/ Be collisions with proton beams from 1.0 to 4.9 GeV and on Ca collisions with calcium beams of 1.0 to 2.0 GeV/A. The shape of the distributions are similar to that at higher energies. The low mass cross section appears to be explained by ..pi..-..pi.. annihilation, but detailed calculations are needed to substantiate tha… more

Measuring the mass and width of the Z sup 0 : The status of the energy spectrometers

Description: The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) collides electrons and positrons produced in the linear accelerator pulse by pulse. The object is to produce collisions energetic enough to produce the heavy intermediate vector boson, the Z{sup 0}. An essential component of the SLC physics program is the precise knowledge of the center-of-mass energy of each interaction. We measure the energy of each collision by using two energy spectrometers. The spec… more

Production and decay of heavy top quarks

Description: Experimental evidence indicates that the top quark exists and has a mass between 50 and 200 GeV/c{sup 2}. The decays of a top quark with a mass in this range are studied with emphasis placed on the mass region near the threshold for production of real W bosons. Topics discussed are: (1) possible enhancement of strange quark production when M{sub W} + m{sub s} < m{sub t} < M{sub W} + m{sub b}; (2) exclusive decays of T mesons to B and B{asterisk} mesons using the non-relativistic quark model; (3… more

Strange particle production in neutrino-neon charged current interactions

Description: Neutral strange particle production in charged-current muon-neutrino interactions have been studied in the Fermilab 15-foot neon bubble chamber. Associated production is expected to be the major source of strange particles in charged-current neutrino interactions. sigma-neutral and xi-minus production by neutrinos was observed. The dependence on various leptonic and hadronic variables is investigated. A fit to single and associated production of s, s/anti-s, and c quarks is described based on t… more

Properties of leptons

Description: The properties of the electron, muon, tau, and their neutrinos are reviewed. Three discrepancies in our understanding of those properties are discussed: the lifetime of orthopositronium, the mass spectra of e{sup +}e{sup -} pairs produced in heavy ion collisions, and the 1-charged particle modes problem in tau decays. The review concludes with a discussion of what we need to learn about the tau and the consequent need for a tau-charm factory. 68 refs., 7 figs., 8 tabs.

Search for W prime and Z prime at CDF

Description: We have searched for heavy charged and neutral vector bosons via the decays W{prime} {yields} ev, W{prime} {yields} {mu}v, Z{prime} {yields} {mu}{mu} in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV, using data taken with the collider Detector at Fermilab. The nonobservation of these processes leads to a lower limit (95% confidence level) of 520 GeV/c{sup 2} on the mass of the W{prime} and of 412 GeV/C{sup 2} on the mass of the Z{prime}, assuming standard model coupling to fermions. 12 refs., 6 f… more

Heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders

Description: The search for the top quark has dominated heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders. For Standard model decay of top the present mass limit in m{sub t} > 89 GeV (95% C.L.). Bottom production cross sections are quite large at hadron colliders, thus providing enough statistics for extensive studies. Results on cross sections, B{sup 0} {minus} {bar B}{sup 0} mixing, exclusive channels and rare B decays will be summarized.

Photon-Photon Physics with the Mark II at PEP

Description: Photon-photon interactions are studied with the Mark II detector at PEP. The inclusive production of charged hadrons at large transverse momenta and the exclusive production of meson pairs at large invarient mass are compared with recent hard scattering calculations. Copious inclusive production of K/sup 0/'s at large transverse momenta provides evidence for charm production. The radiative width of the f'(1520) is measured via its K/sub s//sup 0/ anti K/sub s//sup 0/ decay mode.

Search for the. Lambda. sub b baryon at CDF

Description: The {Lambda}{sub b} baryon has been observed recently by UA1 through its decay {Lambda}{sub b} {yields} J/{psi}{Lambda}{degrees}. Although CDF finds twice as many J/{psi} and observes {Lambda}{degrees} decays, no evidence for an {Lambda}{sub b} signal is seen. The UA1 data supports a lower than expected production P{sub T} for the {Lambda}{sub b}, and therefore, a lower pion P{sub T}, below the observation threshold of CDF. This result suggests that UA1 and CDF are probably not inconsistent, bu… more
