Description: This report summarizes the progress of the Exploratory Research on Solvent Refined Coal Liquefaction project by The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co.'s Merriam Laboratory during 1979. In a series of experiments with varying feed gas composition, low levels (5 to 10 mole %) of carbon monoxide had little effect on the SRC II processing of Pittsburgh Seam coal (Powhatan No. 5 Mine) while higher levels (20 to 40 mole %) resulted in a general degradation of operability and reduced oil yields. Evaluation of an optical microscope method for coal-pyrite/marcasite differentiation

Description: A reflected-polarized light microscope technique for coal marcasite-pyrite differentiation is detailed. Presence of the two minerals was verified by x-ray diffraction analysis. The optical technique produced marcasite content values that were consistently lower than those measured by x-ray diffraction. Although the optical technique produces data that are at best semi-quantitative, it can be used to approximate (+-20%) marcasite concentration in coal without a heavy mineral concentration step.

CaO interaction in the staged combustion of coal

Description: The LIMB (limestone injection multi-stage burner) process offers special potential for reducing NO/sub x/ and SO/sub x/ by at least 50 percent in coal combustion. This is to be accomplished by adding limestone with fuel and/or air in a low NO/sub x/ burner. Air/water oxydesulfurization of coal: laboratory investigation

Description: Air/water oxidative desulfurization has been demonstrated in autoclave experiments at the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center for various coals representative of the major US coal basins. This experimentation has shown that the reaction proceeds effectively for pulverized coals at temperatures of 150 to 200/sup 0/C with air at a total system pressure of 500 to 1500 psig. Advanced coal liquefaction research. Quarterly technical progress report, July 1, 1983-September 30, 1983

Description: Work this quarter focused on staged liquefaction. The effect of residence time on conversion in single pass experiments was found to be quite different for the subbituminous Belle Ayr Mine and bituminous Illinois No. 6 coals studied. With bituminous coal, conversion to soluble material is quite high and the limit of conversion is approached in only a few minutes. Aging study of Li(Si)/FeS/sub 2/ thermally activated batteries. [Results of accelerated aging at 130/sup 0/C]

Description: A technique for accelerating the aging process of thermally activated batteries that use iron disulfide was developed. In this approach, storage at 130/sup 0/C for one week was assumed equivalent to a shelf life of five years. Some of the batteries stored at 130/sup 0/C were discharged to test for functionality changes, and others were disassembled and carefully analyzed for evidence of deleterious reactions. Kinetic studies on the sulfidation of iron by sulfur bearing low-Btu gases

Description: The use of a low-Btu gas as a reducing agent for iron oxide was shown to be favorable at temperatures of 800/sup 0/C or greater. Little benefit was seen in terms of increased reduction rates at higher pressures (up to 5 atmospheres) or in varying either the H/sub 2/ concentration or CO/CO/sub 2/ ratio, within the range of a low-Btu gas. Perform research in process development for hydroretorting of Eastern oil shales: Volume 2, Expansion of the Moving-Bed Hydroretorting Data Base for Eastern oil shales

Description: An extensive data base was developed for six Eastern oil shales: Alabama Chattanooga, Indiana New Albany, Kentucky Sunbury, Michigan Antrim, Ohio Cleveland, and Tennessee Chattanooga shales. The data base included the hydroretorting characteristics of the six shales, as well as the retorting characteristics in the presence of synthesis gas and ionized gas. Mathematical model of the chemistry of the dump leaching of chalcopyrite
