Isolation of pathogenic Naegleria from artificially heated waters

Description: Investigations were undertaken to determine whether heated waters facilitate the proliferation of free-living amoeba that cause primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. Water samples were taken close to the discharges of power plants situated on lakes or rivers in Florida and Texas and from cooling towers in Tennessee. Americium and plutonium in water, biota, and sediment from the central Oregon coast

Description: Plutonium-239, 240 and americium-241 were measured in the mussel Mytilus californianus from the region of Coos Bay, OR. The flesh of this species has a plutonium concentration of about 90 fCi/kg, and an Am-241/Pu-239, 240 ratio that is high relative to mixed fallout, ranging between two and three. Effects of Prudhoe Bay crude oil in sediment on Abarenicola pacifica in laboratory and field experiments

Description: Behavioral responses of organisms are often sensitive indicators of changes in the environment over short time frames. The rate of burrowing of Abarenicola pacifica, a lugworm typical of muddy tidal flats, was studied to determine its response to the presence of hydrocarbons in the environment. Response of the Asiatic clam, Corbicula manilensis, to gamma radiation

Description: When heat exchangers for reactors were plugged by the Asiatic clam, acute gamma radiation was considered as a possible control. Clams were collected and sorted by size; during irradiation the clams were submerged in natural water. Clams of both sizes survived large doses with no radiation damage evident in 30 days. Microfossils from Cerro Prieto geothermal wells, Baja California, Mexico

Description: To aid in a paleoenvironmental and age reconstruction of the Cerro Prieto reservoir system, 59 samples of well cuttings were analyzed for microfossils. The cuttings were obtained at depths from 351 to 3495 m in 14 geothermal wells in the Cerro Prieto field, Baja California, Mexico. We found foraminifera in 6 samples, ostracodes in 19 samples, and nannoplankton as coccoliths in 24 samples. Investigating the impact of drilling mud and its major components on bivalve species of Georges bank. Progress report No. 2, February 28, 1979-November 1, 1979

Description: Results described in progress report No. 1 indicate that 0.3-1.0 grams of drilling mud/liter of seawater can stress bivalve molluscs and that metallic components of drilling muds are assimilated by these organisms. The results posed questions about the short- and long-term effects of stress on energy stores, reproduction, and metal assimilation; accordingly, this year's research program has focused on these three areas and on a continued chemical characterization of the drilling muds used.

Mercury-binding proteins of Mytilus edulis

Description: Mytilus edulis possesses low molecular weight, mercury-binding proteins. The predominant protein isolated from gill tissue is enriched in cysteinyl residues (8%) and possesses an amino acid composition similar to cadmium-binding proteins of mussels and oysters. Genetic effects of low x-ray doses. Progress report, October 1, 1976--September 30, 1977. [In Drosophila]

Description: A linear-quadratic model of dose-kinetics is proposed for x-ray induced recessive lethal mutations in oogonia of Drosophila. From this it should follow that at higher total doses fractionation treatments should give a lower yield of mutations than an equivalent acute exposure. A dose of 6000 R, given acutely and in 3 different fractionation regimes gave results in the expected direction for 2 x 3000 R, and a significant decrease for 3 x 2000 R and for 4 x 1500 R fractionations.
