Measurements of Non-Leptonic Weak Decays of Lambda Hypernuclei

Description: Aspects of recent measurements of the mesonic and non-mesonic partial decay rates of {sub {Lambda}}{sup 5}He, and {sub {Lambda}}{sup 12}C are discussed. Kaon-nucleus interactions

Description: The recent progress in hypernuclear physics, in particular the studies of ..lambda.. and ..sigma.. states via the strangeness-exchange (K/sup -/,..pi../sup -/) reaction, are reviewed. Prospects for future investigations with (proposed) intense kaon beams are also evaluated, for instance the production of high spin hypernuclei via the (..pi../sup +/,K/sup +/) reaction, and the formation of strangeness S = -2 hypernuclei (..lambda lambda.. or Xi/sup -/) by means of the (K/sup -/,K/sup +/) process… more

A = 4 0/sup +/ - 1/sup +/ binding-energy difference

Description: The A = 4 ..lambda..-hypernuclei provide a rich source of information about the s-wave properties of the fundamental hyperon-nucleon (YN) force as well as offer a unique opportunity to investigate the complications that arise in calculations of the properties of bound systems in which one baryon (here the ..lambda..) with a given isospin couples strongly to another (the ..sigma..) with a different isospin. The ..lambda../sup 4/H - ..lambda../sup 4/He isodoublet ground-state energies are not con… more

Aspects of strangeness production with 15 -- 30 GeV proton beams

Description: We discuss the spectrum of physics questions related to strangeness which could be addressed with a 15--30 GeV proton storage ring. We focus on various aspects of strangeness production, including hyperon production in pp collisions, studies of hyperon-nucleon scattering, production of hyper-fragments in p-nucleus collisions, and hyperon spin observables in inclusive production.

Binding energies of hypernuclei and. lambda. -nuclear interactions

Description: Variational Monte Carlo calculations have been made for the s-shell hypernuclei and also of /sup 9/Be hypernuclei with a 2..cap alpha.. + ..lambda.. model. The well depth is calculated variationally with the Fermi hypernetted chain method. A satisfactory description of all the relevant experimental ..lambda.. separation energies and also of the ..lambda..p scattering can be obtained with reasonable TPE ..lambda..N and ..lambda..NN forces and strongly repulsive dispersive ..lambda..NN forces whi… more

Selected problems in experimental intermediate energy physics

Description: The objectives of this research program are to: investigate forefront problems in experimental intermediate energy physics; educate students in this field of research; and, develop the instrumentation necessary to undertake this experimental program. Generally, the research is designed to search for physical processes which cannot be explained by conventional models of elementary interactions. This includes the use of nuclear targets where the nucleus provides a many body environment of strongl… more

S = -2 dibaryons and hypernuclei

Description: Future prospects for the exploration of doubly strange hypernuclear systems are evaluated. Such systems may be produced via the double strangeness exchange reactions (K/sup -/,K/sup +/) or (K/sup -/,K/sup 0/) on nuclear targets. Theoretical estimates are given of the formation cross sections for Xi/sup -/ hypernuclear states via the one-step K/sup -/p ..-->.. K/sup +/Xi/sup -/ process, or discrete states of the ..lambda lambda.. hypernucleus in the two step reaction K/sup -/p ..-->.. ..pi../sup… more

Strangeness exchange reactions and hypernuclei

Description: Recent progress in the spectroscopy of ..lambda.. and ..sigma.. hypernuclei is reviewed. Prospects for the production of doubly strange hypernuclei at a future kaon factory are assessed. It is suggested that the (K/sup -/,K/sup +/) reaction on a nuclear target may afford an optimal way of producing the H dibaryon, a stable six quark object with J/sup ..pi../ = O/sup +/, S = -2.

Physics opportunities with PILAC

Description: In the Long Range Plan prepared in 1989 for nuclear science in the 1990's, this nation's ability to maintain nuclear science at the intellectual cutting edge'' was addressed. In this document a number of facilities designed to do this were cited, including the CEBAF electron accelerator and the RHIC heavy ion accelerator. Beyond these facilities the Report noted the scientific opportunities available with a high intensity hadron facility and emphasized the importance of studies of the strong fo… more

Production of double hypernuclei via the (K/sup -/, K/sup +/) reaction

Description: Cross section estimates are presented for the formation of ..lambda lambda.. and ..xi.. hypernuclei in the (K/sup -/, K/sup +/) strangeness exchange reaction, both for transitions to particular low-lying final states and also for the summed cross section. The problem of the well depth and damping width for a ..xi../sup -/ in nuclear matter is also addressed.

Open problems and future prospects for hypernuclear physics

Description: We appraise the current status of our knowledge of hypernuclear structure physics, and emphasize the unsolved problems. The prospects for significant advances in high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy with CW electron beams at CEBAF or intense pion beams at the proposed PILAC facility at LPF are discussed. These facilities could greatly extend our understanding of strangeness S = {minus}1 hypernuclear systems. For S = {minus}2 systems, new events have been seen in a (K{sup {minus}},K{sup +})… more

Production of. lambda lambda. hypernuclei in the (K/sup -/,K/sup +/) reaction

Description: Very little data exists on doubly strange ..lambda lambda.. hypernuclei; only the ground states of /sub ..lambda lambda../He/sup 6/ and /sub ..lambda lambda../Be/sup 10/ have been seen in emulsion experiments. With existing K/sup -/ beam lines and magnetic spectrometer systems at CERN and Brookhaven, and the prospect of much higher K/sup -/ intensities at an eventual kaon factory, one is invited to consider the possibility that discrete states of ..lambda lambda.. hypernuclei may be observed di… more
