High-energy proton radiation damage of high-purity germanium detectors

Description: Motivated by their applicability to gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments in space, quantitative studies of radiation damage effects in high-purity germanium detectors due to high-energy charged particles have been initiated with the irradiation by 6 GeV/c protons of two 1.0 cm thick planar detectors maintained at 88/sup 0/K. The threshold for resolution degradation and the annealing characteristics differs markedly from those previously observed for detectors irradiated by fast neutrons. Under pr… more

The Measurement of Energy and Intensity of Gamma Rays by Use of a Scintillation Spectrometer

Description: The analysis of gamma-ray spectra measured with a scintillation counter with an anticoincidence annulus is described in detail. In particular the problem of the determination of the energy and intensity of gamma rays from such measurements is considered. The shapes of the full-energy peaks in observed complex spectra are studied and an attempt is made to justify their description in terms of a Gaussian response function. The details of the statistical analysis of complex gamma-ray spectra are g… more

Gamma densitometer for measuring Pu density in fuel tubes

Description: A fuel-gamma-densitometer (FGD) has been developed to examine nondestructively the uniformity of plutonium in aluminum-clad fuel tubes at the Savannah River Plant (SRP). The monitoring technique is ..gamma..-ray spectroscopy with a lead-collimated Ge(Li) detector. Plutonium density is correlated with the measured intensity of the 208 keV ..gamma..-ray from /sup 237/U (7d) of the /sup 241/Pu (15y) decay chain. The FGD measures the plutonium density within 0.125- or 0.25-inch-diameter areas of th… more

Data acquisition system for the HHIRF spin spectrometer

Description: The Spin Spectrometer at the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility (HHIRF) is a multidetector ..gamma..-ray spectrometer consisting of 72 separate NaI detector elements closely packed in a 4..pi.. geometry. The basic apparatus was constructed at Washington University and has been installed and implemented at the HHIRF at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectrometer was designed especially for the investigation of the mechanisms of heavy-ion induced nuclear reactions and of the structure of n… more

Radionuclide deposition and exposure in the Federal Republic of Germany after the Chernobyl accident

Description: Analyses of air, water, and foodstuff samples, together with in situ gamma spectrometric measurements in the Federal Republic of Germany, have documented the deposition and exposure consequences of the Chernobyl accident. In some cases, exposure values are significantly higher than background levels. Data compiled for the period from the initial identification of excess atmospheric radioactivity to the present, represent a unique resource for testing and validating models of environmental trans… more

Three-dimensional contaminant plume dynamics in the vadose zone: Simulation of the 241-T-106 single-shell tank leak at Hanford

Description: Approximately 2,000 m{sup 3} of liquid containing radioactive and chemical wastes leaked from the 241-T-106 single-shell tank at the Hanford Site. The leak discharged into the unsaturated, coarse-grained sediments of the Hanford formation which underlie the base of the tank. The PORFLO-3 computer code was used to study plume migration for {sup 106}Ru and {sup 137}Cs. The flow and transport properties of the soils through which the plume has migrated are critical input data for the model but are… more

Gamma-ray spectral determinations with a portable analyzer

Description: A portable sodium iodide spectrometer was used in a variety of field applications. The spectrometer is a battery-operated system complete with a 5 x 5 cm NaI(Tl) detector, 1024 channel memory divisible into four quadrants, special summation and calibration circuits, and a telemeter output for data transmittals. The portable spectrometer has been used to make in situ measurements around a radioactive waste burial ground. Typical spectra of /sup 137/Cs and /sup 60/Co were easily discernible at on… more

Gamma-Ray Measurements With the Segmented Gamma Scan. [Maintenance Manual]

Description: A revised and updated operation and maintenance manual for the segmented gamma-scan instrument is presented, which describes routine assay techniques as well as the theory of operation in sufficient depth that an experienced assayist can make nonroutine assays on a wide variety of materials and samples. In addition, complete electronic and electrical schematics of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL)-designed portions of the system are presented, along with sufficient system and circuit … more

Data Analysis Techniques for Gamma-Ray Scintillation Spectrometry

Description: A series of computer programs are described which Were successfully applied to the reduction of pulse-height data using digital computers. Calculations carried out by these programs include: determination of pulse height vs energy response of an NaI detector; calculation of coincidence sum spectra; and the analysis of complex pulse-height spectra to obtain energies and relative intensities of individual gamma rays or relative abundances from a mixture of radionuclides. Measurement problems and … more

Absolute instrumental neutron activation analysis at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

Description: The Environmental Science Division at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has in use a system of absolute Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA). Basically, absolute INAA is dependent upon the absolute measurement of the disintegration rates of the nuclides produced by neutron capture. From such disintegration rate data, the amount of the target element present in the irradiated sample is calculated by dividing the observed disintegration rate for each nuclide by the expected value for the d… more

High pressure Moessbauer spectroscopy in diamond anvil cells

Description: Diamond anvil cells provide a means to obtain near-hydrostatic pressures from the kilobar to the megabar regime. Moessbauer spectroscopy (MS) nicely complements the optical and X-ray measurements usually made. After a brief summary of the techniques applicable to MS, we present several examples of high pressure MS including hysteresis in the {sub {alpha}}-{sub {var epsilon}} transition in Fe, metallization in molecular crystals and the insulator-metal Mott transition in NiI{sub 2} and CoI{sub 2… more

The GAMMASPHERE

Description: GAMMASPHERE is one of a new generation of gamma ray detector arrays. It consists of 100 Compton-suppressed large volume Ge detectors. The design goal is to achieve high efficiency and peak-to-total value for four to five fold coincidence experiments. Such high-fold coincidence capability will provide new physics opportunities in areas such as high spins, transfer reactions, giant resonances, and astrophysics. The design of the detector and shield has been developed through extensive simulation … more

Measurement control for plutonium isotopic measurements using gamma-ray spectrometry

Description: A measurement control (MC) program should be an integral part of every nondestructive assay measurement system used for the assay of special nuclear materials. This report describes an MC program for plutonium isotopic composition measurements using high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy. This MC program emphasizes the standardization of data collection procedures along with the implementation of internal and external measurement control checks to provide the requisite measurement quality assur… more

Release of fission products from irradiated SRP fuels at elevated temperature. Data report on the first stage of the SRP source term study

Description: For a sound evaluation of the consequences of a hypothetical nuclear reactor accident, a knowledge of the extent of fission product release from the fuel at anticipated temperatures and atmosphere conditions is required. Measurements of fission product release have been performed with a variety of nuclear fuels under various conditions of temperature and atmosphere. While the use of data obtained on fuels similar to the fuel of interest may provide a reasonable estimate of release fractions, pr… more
