Fermilab 200 MeV linac control system hardware

Description: This report is a description of the present Linac distributed control system that replaces the original Xerox computer and interface electronics with a network of 68000-based stations. In addition to replacing the obsolete Xerox equipment, goals set for the new system were to retain the fast response and interactive nature of the original system, to improve reliability, to ease maintenance, and to provide 15 Hz monitoring of all Linac parameters. Our previous experience with microcomputer insta… more

Proposal to assemble a high resolution-electron sensitive-energy flow calorimeter in the NEULAND spectrometer

Description: A ..gamma.. catcher and a liquid scintillation calorimeter module in a simple configuration that is well suited to the investigation of several different neutrino induced processes are described. The variety of neutrino beams now available at Fermilab and synchrotron intensity and energy together with the high resolution calorimeter allow a multiplicity of experiments to be carried out with a single detector configuration.

A conceptual framework for using DOE 5700. 6C and the other DOE orders as an integrated management system; the Fermilab experience

Description: In this paper, I describe a conceptual framework that uses DOE Order 5700.6C and more than 140 other DOE Orders as an integrated management system -- but I describe it within the context of the broader sociological and cultural issues of doing research at DOE funded facilities. The conceptual framework has two components. The first involves an interpretation of the 10 criteria of DOE 5700.6C that is tailored for a research environment. The second component involves using the 10 criteria as func… more

Operational history of Fermilab's 1500 W refrigerator used for energy saver magnet production testing

Description: The 1500 W helium refrigerator system utilizes two oil-injected screw compressors staged to feed a liquid nitrogen pre-cooled cold box. Refrigeration is provided by two Sulzer TGL-22 magnetic/gas bearing turbines. The refrigerator feeds six magnet test stands via a 10,000 L dewar and subcooler equipped distribution box. The design of the controls has permitted the system to be routinely operated 24 hours/day, seven days/week with only five operators. It has operated approximately 90% of the 4-1… more

Control and initial operation of the Fermilab BO low. beta. insertion

Description: The operation of the Fermilab BO low ..beta.. insertion involves the coordinated control of the 4 strings of quadrupoles of the insertion itself along with several magnetic correction elements (20 dipoles for the closed orbit, 2 quad circuits for betatron tunes, 1 skew quad circuit for coupling, and 2 sextupole circuits for chromaticity). When the beam is stored at high energy, these elements must correct the errors induced by the strong superconducting quadrupoles of the insertion as the optic… more

Pulsed power supplies for the Fermilab 1 TeV switchyard

Description: An upgraded system of pulseed switching magnets has been implemented in the Fermilab Switchyard to accommodate proton energies up to 1 TeV. These devices are required for switching the ''slow'' and ''fast'' extracted beams into their respective beam lines. ''Slow'' beam passes undeflected through the magnet in the off condition. During a puls ''slow'' is disabled and ''fast'', which is of approx.1 ms duration, is deflected. The requirement then is for a ''flat-top'' current pulse of minimum ris… more

Informal Technical Progress Report and Budget for Incremental Funding

Description: The principal activities during the last year were related to LAMPF experiments, a newly initiated radiochemical search for Glashow particles, and the writing up of experimental work completed at FERMILAB studying the interaction of 400-MeV protons and 150-MeV pions with complex nuclei. Collaboration is proceeding with Los Alamos on heavy methanes as atmospheric tracers and in proposing a geological search for enhanced solar neutrinos in past geological times.

UPS UNIX product support

Description: The need to provide central support an distribution of many software packages across a variety of UNIX platforms at Fermilab has led to development of a methodology, UPS, for the packaging, maintenance, and distribution of our software. UPS has now been implemented and in use for almost a year on four different UNIX platforms. This paper discusses the goals of the software, implementation of the product, and experiences in its use. 8 refs., 3 figs.

Versatile secondary beam for the meson area

Description: A new secondary beam design is outlined for the Meson M6 Beamline that combines versatility with economy. The beamline described will transport charged particles of either sign to 800 GeV/c and bring the beam to a focus in one of three potential experimental areas. The plan makes maximal use of existing civil construction.

Description: Thirty-nine one meter square proportional chambers with delay line readout were constructed for the external muon identifier of the Fermilab 15 foot bubble chamber. They provide X,Y,U(45/sup 0/) and T (avalanche time) information using a single wire plane, etched strip cathodes and nine amplifiers. They have a time resolution of +-27ns, single particle spatial resolution of +-2 to +-3mm and double particle resolution of approximately 2/sup 1///sub 2/ to 4cm. Abort kicker power supply systems at Fermilab

Description: Over the past several years, Fermilab has been operating with a single turn proton abort system in both the superconducting Tevatron and the conventional Main Ring. The abort kicker power supply for this system discharges a lumped capacitance into the inductive magnet load, causing the beam to enter the abort channel. The characteristics of this current waveform are defined by the requirements of the machine operation. The standard fixed target running mode calls for 12 booster batches of beam … more
