Mixing and Evaporation in a Packed Vessel

Description: In connection with an evaluation of the operability of a 36-inch diameter remote evaporator at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant that was to be packed with a corrosionresistant neutron-poison packing for criticality control, an investigation in a 30-inch diameter vessel proved that air sparging effectively mixes solutions. The data showed that at similar spar;e rates the presence of the packing caused an increase in the time needed for complete mixing. The investigation showed that solutions … more

SALT PHASE CHLORINATION OF REACTOR FUELS. IV. NIOBIUM BEHAVIOR IN THE LEAD CHLORIDE AND CHLORINE-LEAD CHLORIDE SYSTEMS

Description: Investigation of the behavior of Nb in PbCl/sub 2/ showed that the Nb dissolution rate is quite low. Since stirring increases the rate appreciably, it is likely that the initial reaction is diffusion controlled. A subsequent reaction is linear in rate with an activation energy of 23.4 kcal per mole. Incomplete volatilization of dissolved Nb from PbCl/sub 2/ is due to the presence of lower oxidation states of Nb. The addition of Cl to PbCl/sub 2/ increases the rate of dissolution of Nb. The rate… more

A Theoretical Study of the Transient Operation and Stability of Two-Phase Natural Circulation Loops

Description: Mathematical models of the time-dependent behavior of two-phase natural- circulation loops were used to predict the operation and to explain the unusual instability sometimes observed. The initial results obtained for a loop similar to the Univ. of Minnesota loop were used to formulate a more complex and accurate model, and the predicted transient behavior was in close agreement with the experimental results from the Minnesota loop. For a 300psia, high-pressure loop, unstable oscillatory behavi… more

Flashing inception in flowing liquids

Description: The inception of net vaporization in flashing flows is examined. It is suggested that the flashing inception can be expressed as two additive effects. One is due to the static decompression which is a function of the initial temperature and also of the expansion rate. The other effect which is a function of Reynolds number and flashing index, is due to the turbulent fluctuations of the flowing liquid. It is shown that by taking a three standard deviation band on the turbulent velocity fluctuati… more

Active layer hydrology for Imnavait Creek, Toolik, Alaska

Description: The hydrology of the active layer of a watershed is described. In the annual hydrologic cycle, snowmelt is the most significant event at Imnavait Creek located near Toolik Lake, Alaska. Precipitation that has accumulated for more than 6 months on the surface melts in a relatively short period of 7 to 10 days once sustained melting occurs. Significant runoff events are few. Convective storms covering relatively small areas on the North Slope of Alaska can produce significant small-scale events i… more

Open-cycle OTEC system performance analysis. [Claude cycle]

Description: An algorithm developed to calculate the performance of Claude-Cycle ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems is described. The algorithm treats each component of the system separately and then interfaces them to form a complete system, allowing a component to be changed without changing the rest of the algorithm. Two components that are subject to change are the evaporator and condenser. For this study we developed mathematical models of a channel-flow evaporator and both a horizontal jet… more

Chemical Technology Division Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, April 1962

Description: Bubble size measurements in the foam column showed that a spinnerette with 50 mu holes gave a nearly normal distribution of bubbles sizes while a coarse fritted glass gas sparger had a tail of large bubbles which did not fit the normal curve. A set of equations solvable by a finite difference technique are presented which completely describe the irreversible reaction rate of H/sub 2/ or CO with a fixed bed of CuO pellets. Radiation damage tests are in progress to evaluate plastics for the Trans… more

Chlorination of Uranium and Fission Product Oxides in Molten Halide Media

Description: The chlorination of mixtures of uranium and fission product oxides in various molten halide systems by sparging with a chlorine-carbon monoxide mixture was investigated. The chlorination reaction causes the suspended oxide to form species that are soluble in the molten salt and removes some of the fission product elements by volatilization of the chlorides. The rate ot oxide dissolution and the fission product behavior both proved to be dependent upon the composition of the molten halide medium… more
