Multiheteromacrocycles that complex metal ions. Sixth progress report, 1 May 1979-30 April 1980. [Hemispherands; spherands]

Description: Objective is to design synthesize, and evaluate cyclic and polycyclic host organic compounds for their abilities to complex and lipophilize guest metal ions, their complexes, and their clusters. Host organic compounds consist of strategically placed solvating, coordinating, and ion-pairing sites tied together by covalent bonds through hydrocarbon units around cavities shaped to be occupied by guest metal ions or by metal ions plus their ligands. Specificity in complexation is sought by matching… more

Electron transfer reactions of metal complexes in solution

Description: A few representative electron-transfer reactions are selected and their kinetic parameters compared with the predictions of activated complex models. Since Taube has presented an elegant treatment of intramolecular electron-transfer reactions, emphasis is on bimolecular reactions. The latter electron-transfer reactions are more complicated to treat theoretically since the geometries of their activated complexes are not as well known as for the intramolecular case. In addition in biomolecular re… more

Excited-state proton-transfer kinetics in 1-naphthol, 1-naphthol-sulfonates, and organometallic complexes

Description: The dissociation of 1-naphthol in aqueous solution occurs so rapidly that the fluorescence from the neutral form, ROH, has been previously described as completely extinguished or hardly noticeable. Apparently nearly all of the fluorescence originates from the naphtholate ion. This paper reports on the proton-transfer characteristics of a series of 1-naphthol compounds, and also reports preliminary data on excited-state proton transfer in an organometallic complex of ruthenium.

Ferrocyanide-containing waste tanks: Ferrocyanide chemistry and reactivity

Description: The complexing constant for hexacyano-iron complexes, both Fe(2) and Fe(3), are exceptionally large. The derived transition metal salts or double salts containing alkali metal ions are only slightly soluble. The various nickel compounds examined in this study, i.e., those predicted to have been formed in the Hanford waste scavenging program, are typical examples. In spite of their relative stability towards most reagents under ambient conditions, they are all thermodynamically unstable towards … more

Vectorially photoinduced electron-transfer processes across water-in-oil interfaces of microemulsions

Description: Artificial photosynthetic devices are potential fuel sources. The basic idea in the design of such devices is a photosensitized electron-transfer that yields chemical species capable of reducing and oxidizing water to hydrogen and oxygen. A fundamental difficulty in effecting this transfer is the thermodynamically favored back reactions of the intermediary redox species. An interfacial model composed of a water-in-oil microemulsion is suggested to provide the separation of these redox species, … more

Chemical activation of molecules by metals: Experimental studies of electron distributions and bonding

Description: The formal relationship between measured molecular ionization energies and thermodynamic bond dissociation energies has been developed into a single equation which unifies the treatment of covalent bonds, ionic bonds, and partially ionic bonds. This relationship has been used to clarify the fundamental thermodynamic information relating to metal-hydrogen, metal-alkyl, and metal-metal bond energies. We have been able to obtain a direct observation and measurement of the stabilization energy prov… more

Development and radiotherapeutic application of /sup 211/At-labeled radiopharmaceuticals. Progress report, March 1, 1981-February 28, 1982

Description: This project is concerned with developing the potential of alpha-emitting radionuclides as agents for radiotherapy. Alpha-emitters seem ideally suited for his application because their high linear energy transfer and short range permit the deposition of considerable energy in a very small volume of tissue. Unlike the beta particles of /sup 131/I which have a range of about 1 to 2 mm in tissue, 5 to 7 MeV alpha particles would traverse only a few cell diameters. Among the available alpha-emitter… more
