Synthesis and evaluation of new cathode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. Annual report, April 26, 1976-September 15, 1977

Description: The objective of the first year of this study was the investigation of two new classes of complex sulfide materials of potential value for ambient and high temperature, high energy rechargeable batteries with lithium anodes. The two new classes were the sulfospinels and simple and mixed layered disulfides of transitional metals of groups IVB and VB. In addition, three simple sulfides, CoS, CoS/sub 2/ and FeS/sub 2/ were also investigated. Studies of the synthesis methods have resulted in the de… more

Development of ferromagnetic spinels for optical isolation at 10. 6. mu. m. Progress report, May 1, 1977--July 31, 1977

Description: An analysis of factors which influence the optical transparency of hot-pressed CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ at 10.6 ..mu..m was made. It was found that multiphonon absorption, an intrinsic process, is the factor which limits the ultimate achievable absorption coefficient, ..cap alpha.., at 10.6 ..mu..m. Several extrinsic processes have also been found to affect the transmission of hot-pressed CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/. In sufficient concentration, oxygen appearing as SO/sub 4//sup 2 -/ or similar sulfate comp… more

Development of ferromagnetic spinels for optical isolation at 10. 6. mu. m

Description: Vacuum hot pressing was used to fabricate CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/, CdCr/sub 2/Se/sub 4/ and (1-x) CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/.x CdCr/sub 2/Se/sub 4/ discs with diameters of 1.25 cm from fine powders and small single crystals to relative densities as high as 99.6%. Optical attenuation coefficients of approx. 1.0 cm/sup -1/ at 10.6 m were obtained for CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/, and values of 12.1 cm/sup -1/ and 14.9 cm/sup -1/ for the selenide and sulfur-selenide mixture. Two-and-three-phonon absorption bands were… more

Enhanced High Temperature Corrosion Resistance in Advanced Fossil Energy Systems by Nano-Passive Layer Formation

Description: Due to their excellent corrosion resistance, iron aluminum alloys are currently being considered for use as weld claddings in fossil fuel fired power plants. The susceptibility to hydrogen cracking of these alloys at higher aluminum concentrations has highlighted the need for research into the effect of chromium additions on the corrosion resistance of lower aluminum alloys. In the present work, three iron aluminum alloys were exposed to simulated coal combustion environments at 500 C and 700 C… more

Rate enhancement for catalytic upgrading coal naphthas

Description: The removal of heteroatoms from naphtha using first row unsupported metal sulfide catalysts were completed. The maxima HDS activity, normalizing to the same weight of metal, is obtained for manganese sulfide while the minimum HDS activity is obtained for nickel sulfide. Chianelli et al. (1) reported that, for the first row transition metal sulfides, chromium sulfide has the highest activity for HDS of dibenzothiophene and manganese sulfide is the least active. The catalyst activity pattern of t… more

Development of ferromagnetic spinels for optical isolation at 10. 6. mu. m. Progress report, November 1, 1976--January 31, 1977

Description: During this quarter, measurements of the optical absorption coefficient, ..cap alpha.., of crystals of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ were measured at 10.6 ..mu..m and room temperature, and correlated with growth parameters established during the last quarter. A minimum absorption coefficient of 15.6 cm/sup -1/ was obtained. Procedures for hot forging crystals of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ were established in preparation for a study of the effect of forging on the optical absorption. Single crystals of CoCr/sub … more

Development of ferromagnetic spinels for optical isolation at 10. 6. mu. m. Progress report, August 1, 1976--October 31, 1976. [Summaries of research activities at University of Rochester]

Description: During this quarter, emphasis was placed on the growth of small single crystals of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/. The size and morphology of the crystals was studied as a function of growth parameters. Facilities for increasing the chemical purity of the crystals were constructed.

Development of ferromagnetic spinels for optical isolation at 10. 6. mu. m. Progress report, August 1, 1976--April 30, 1977

Description: The absorption coefficient, ..cap alpha.., of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ crystals was measured at 10.6 ..mu..m and correlated with growth parameters. The best result to date was ..cap alpha.. = 15.5 cm/sup -1/. An analysis of the intrinsic absorption of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ at 10.6 ..mu..m was made indicating a lower limit to ..cap alpha.. of 10/sup -4/ cm/sup -1/. Measurements of ..cap alpha.. vs. lambda in hot pressed disks of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ reveal that the most probable impurity affecting ..cap… more
