ANHARMONIC POTENTIAL CONSTANTS AND THEIR DEPENDENCE UPON BOND LENGTH

Description: Empirical study of cubic and quartic vibrational force constants for diatomic molecules shows them to be approximately exponential functions of internuclear distance. A family of curves is obtained, determined by the location of the bonded atoms in rows of the periodic table. Displacements between successive curves correspond closely to those in Badger's rule for quadratic force constants (for which the parameters are redetermined to accord with all data now available). Constants for excited el… more

DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCESS FOR SODIUM BONDING OF EBR-II FUEL AND BLANKET ELEMENTS

Description: Procedures for assembling EBR-II fuel elements with annular sodium bonds between the uranium rods and the stainless steel claddings are outlined. The results of several meltdown and uranium-settling experiments are given. Bonding experiments were performed: furnace bonding, submerged canning, ultrasonic bonding, centrifuging, pressure pulsing, and vibratory bonding. Vibratory bonding was chosen for the production of the first EBR-II core. (D.L.C.)

Phosphate-bonded glass cements for geothermal wells. Final report

Description: Calcium aluminosilicate glasses were found to react with phosphoric acid in three ways depending upon silica content. Above 55% SiO/sub 2/ they are insoluble while below 50% they dissolve readily. The transition compositions release calcium and aluminum ions and a silica gel phase replaces the glass. Activation energies in the order of 10 kcal/mole are associated with the dissolution. Equilibrium studies in the systems CaO-P/sub 2/O/sub 5/-H/sub 2/O, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-P/sub 2/O/sub 5/-H/sub 2/O… more

Geothermal drilling problems and their impact on cost

Description: Historical data are presented that demonstrate the significance of unexpected problems. In extreme cases, trouble costs are the largest component of well costs or severe troubles can lead to abandonment of a hole. Drilling experiences from US geothermal areas are used to analyze the frequency and severity of various problems. In addition, average trouble costs are estimated based on this analysis and the relationship between trouble and depth is discussed. The most frequent drilling and complet… more

Method for fabricating a seal between a ceramic and a metal alloy

Description: A method of fabricating a seal between a ceramic and an alloy comprising the steps of prefiring the alloy in an atmosphere with a very low partial pressure of oxygen, firing the assembled alloy and ceramic in air, and gradually cooling the fired assembly to avoid the formation of thermal stress in the ceramic. The method forms a bond between the alloy and the ceramic capable of withstanding the environment of a pressurized water reactor and suitable for use in an electrical conductivity sensiti… more

GRAPHITE-STAINLESS STEEL COMPATIBILITY STUDIES

Description: S>The compatibility of type 304L stainless steel in intimate contact with graphite is being studied as a function of temperature and contact pressure. This study is an outgrowth of materials compatibility problems in present and advanced gas-cooled reactors, where structural members in direct contact with graphite provide the possibility of both carburization and self-welding. Initial studies were concerned with surface reactions in the absence of gaseous contaminants under a vacuum of 10/sup -… more

Improved Sample Bonding and Emission With Tantalum Surface Ionization Filaments

Description: Techniques for conditioning of Ta filaments for improved bonding and emission with a Ta metal powder-Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ mixture are described. A porous Ta metal layer is deposited which restricts sample to the filament. Metal- oxide ion emission is enhanced with additional Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ to the porous layer. Reduction of fractionation through action of liquid Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ is discussed in particular for Sr+ emission. Use of conditioned filaments for rapid U concentration analysis with a s… more

FUEL CYCLE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. Quarterly Progress Report, January 1 to March 31, 1962

Description: The permanent shutdown of the Westinghouse Testing Reactor at the end of the quarter forced a revision in plans for programming the remainder of the irradiation of the two uninstrumented capsules whose testing was in progress. The minimum estimated burnup at this point, based on hot cell data obtained from the pilot capsule, was 13,100 MW-d/ton U. It was decided to continue the testing of only one capsule in another reactor until the original goal of 20,000 MW-d/ton U is reached. The irradiatio… more

Improved bondability of molded rigid urethane form by plasma treatment

Description: Most mold releases, including so-called nontransferring releases, interfere with bonding of molded urethane foam. Water-washable mold releases are not readily removable from urethane foams cured at elevated temperatures. Plasma treatment in either argon or oxygen improves the bonding surfaces of molded urethane foam. Comparable bonding results can be obtained with RF (13.6 MHz), AC (20 kHz), or DC-plasma treatments. The plasma-treated foam surfaces will retain the improved bondability for a con… more

Removable, hermetically-sealing, filter attachment system for hostile environments

Description: A removable and reusable filter attachment system is disclosed. A filter medium is fixed to, and surrounded by, a filter frame having a coaxial, longitudinally extending, annular rim. The rim engages an annular groove which surrounds the opening of a filter housing. The annular groove contains a fusible material and a heating mechanism for melting the fusible material. Upon resolidifying, the fusible material forms a hermetic bond with the rim and groove. Remelting allows detachment and replace… more

Band structure and density of states of. beta. -silicon nitride

Description: The electronic energy band structure of ..beta..-Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ has been calculated using the first principles LCAO method. The bottom of the Conduction Band (CB) is at GAMMA and the top of the valence band (VB) is located along GAMMAA line. The very flat top VB along GAMMAA accounts for a large hole effective mass. The indirect band gap obtained is very close to the experimental value of 5.2 eV. The density of states (DOS) and partial DOS are also obtained and are in good agreement with pho… more

Phase 2 of the array automated assembly task for the Low Cost Solar Array Project. Final report, October 1, 1978-October 30, 1979

Description: The process sequence for the fabrication of dendritic web silicon into solar panels has been modified to include aluminum back surface field formation. Sputtering is the preferred method for depositing the aluminum. Plasma etching has been shown to be a feasible technique for pre-diffusion cleaning of the web. This would replace wet chemical cleaning. Several contacting systems have been studied. The total plated Pd-Ni system (Motorola Process) is not compatible with our process sequence; howev… more

Pretreatment of Kapton-coated cable for epoxy adhesion

Description: Preliminary testing of a new system for protecting bonded strain gages that will be attached to the MFTF magnets indicated falling electrical resistance to ground, attributed to the infiltration of moisture. The most likely infiltration route seemed to be along the Kapton lead cable, which has an outer surface of FEP fluorocarbon resin. Samples of the cable were pretreated with a fluorocarbon etchant, Tetra-Etch, for periods of 10, 25, and 40 s at room temperature, followed by rinsing with demi… more
