Optical design and performance of the X25 hybrid wiggler beam line at the NSLS

Description: The X25 beam line at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) began full-power commissioning in 1990. It extracts radiation from a 27 pole hybrid wiggler, which produces up to 1.8 kW of total power with a peak horizontal density of 450 W/mrad and critical energy of 4.6 keV. The design and performance of the beam line optics are described, in particular the cooling of the first monochromator crystal. 28 refs., 5 figs.

X-ray, soft x-ray, and vuv beam position monitor

Description: An x-ray beam position monitor has been developed and is currently operational at the NIST beamline X-24A of the National Synchrotron Light Source, Upton, NY. It was developed to accurately measure the vertical position of the synchrotron beam and to allow precise positioning of beamline optics. Multilayer optical elements for generation and analysis of circularly polarized x-rays

Description: Calculations of the relative phase changes of {sigma} and {pi} electric field components on Bragg reflection from and transmission through multilayers are presented. Large relative phase changes can be calculated in certain cases, which may lead to utility of multilayers as quarter-wave plates for generation and analysis of circularly polarized soft x-radiation. NOVA integrated alignment/diagnostic sensors

Performance of the Los Alamos expanding telescope

Description: An expanding telescope can produce a very low divergence particle beam, provided that the beam optics have sufficient quality in order not to introduce large aberrations. Even as late as two years ago there were no theoretical beamline codes, and little experimental work that could describe the third-order aberrations introduced by an expanding telescope. An analysis of grazing incidence metal mirrors in a laser ICF reactor driver

Description: Grazing incidence metal mirrors (GIMMs) are examined to replace dielectric mirrors for the final elements in a laser beam line for an inertial confinement fusion reactor. For a laser driver with a wavelength from 250 to 500 nm in a 10-ms pulse, irradiated mirrors made of Al, Al alloys, or Mg were found to have calculated laser damage limits of 0.3--2.3 J/cm{sup 2} of beam energy and neutron lifetime fluence limits of over 5 {times} 10{sup 20} 14 MeV n/cm{sup 2} when used at grazing incidence an… more

The Effect of Wiggler Errors on FEL Gain

Description: For an FEL operating in the exponential regime before saturation, we present an analytic description of the effect on the gain of longitudinal velocity variations arising from wiggler field errors. The average gain reduction and the width of the output power distribution are expressed in terms of the mean square average of the ponderomotive phase shift per gain length. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and of its sources

Scheme to funnel ion beams with a radio-frequency quadrupole

Description: We describe a proposed method to funnel ion beams using a new form of the radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) structure. This RFQ accepts two bunched ion beams and combines them into a single final beam with interlaced microstructure pulses. It also provides uninterrupted periodic transverse focusing to facilitate the funneling of beams with high current and low emittance.

Production of low energy positive ions suitable for double electron capture systems

Description: Single aperture beam extraction studies have been made of a new technique to produce low divergence beams of about 0.4/sup 0/ HWHM at about 15 keV to 40 keV. Computer calculations show that this technique of coating the plasma side of the plasma grid with about 0.01'' of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ can also be extended to the 0.5 keV to 5 keV range with beam optics less than 1/sup 0/. Source performance including results from multiaperture source operation will be discussed.

Modeling long-term collider performance

Description: A model for the SSC arcs is described with multipole lattice field errors agglomerated into 32 lattice points, and with first order lattice errors and modulation provided by discrete transfer elements. Numerical solutions for long term dynamic aperture studies are obtained by multipole kick-drift tracking. Dispersive effects of transverse magnet displacements in rolled arc achromats

Description: The effect of transverse displacements of combined function magnets is investigated where the disperion in not matched due to roll. Some effects of the transverse-stability requirement on the design of a grating linac

Description: The transverse stability of the grating linac proposed by Palmer is analyzed. It is shown that an open structure such as a grating is always unstable transversely as long as it is uniform. The structure can be made stable by utilizing the strong focusing principle. This is achieved by periodically interrupting the grating shape. We analyze the strong focusing grating linac, and find that the stability requirement places a non-trivial constraint on the phase acceptance of the system.

A five-picosecond electron pulse from ANL (Argonne National Laboratory) L-Band Linac

Description: The pulse-compression system of the Argonne National Laboratory Chemistry Division L-Band Linac, presented at the 1986 Linear Accelerator Conference at Stanford, California, has been completed. A five-picosecond-wide electron pulse containing 6 {times} 10{sup {minus}9} coulomb charge has been achieved. Acceleration parameters and the pulse-width measurement technique are discussed, and future plans for the utilization of this pulse in radiation chemistry studies are presented. 5 refs., 4 figs.

Transport properties of a discrete helical electrostatic quadrupole

Description: The helical electrostatic quadrupole (HESQ) lens has been proposed as a low energy beam transport system which permits intense H{sup {minus}} beams to be focused into an RFQ without seriously increasing the beam's emittance. Analytical methods of electrode design for a relativistic electron gun

Description: The standard paraxial ray equation method for the design of electrodes for an electrostatically focused gun is extended to include relativistic effects and the effects of the beam's azimuthal magnetic field.
