COMP: a BASIC language nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program

Description: COMP is an interactive nonlinear least squares routine written in BASIC language and used to obtain estimates of parameters in nonlinear functions and to approximate their associated statistical errors. The program uses the linearizing (or Taylor Series) expansion of partial derivatives outlined in Draper and Smith, (1966, pp. 267 to 270). Therefore, partial derivatives must be supplied (as well as the function) by the user for any new models not currently contained in the programs. When a line… more

Audit trails and PC control on Novell networks

Description: Although Novell Netware 286 provides excellent access control at both the server and the directory level, the record they make available through the accounting function leaves much to be desired. This paper presents two programs; the first is a BASIC program that converts the output of Novell's PAUDIT command into single line audit trails, providing an auditable record of server access. The second program, written in dBase III+, can be used to insure that all PC's accessing the LAN are recorded… more

Development of software for computer assisted model simplification. Final report. [Lagrange multipliers]

Description: The final report of DBS Corporation on the model simplification project is presented. The purpose of the project is to develop computer-assisted model simplification. The contributions of DBS to this project where an initial overall project assessment, contributions to design principles and testing procedures, specific experimental designs, and initial test results. The main contributions of DBS to this project were in the area of LP matrix scaling, and particularly in the potential usefulness … more

Improved plug valve computer-aided design of plug element

Description: The purpose of this document is to present derivations of equations for the design of a plug valve and to present a computer program which performs the design calculations based on the derivations. The valve is based on a plug formed from a tractrix of revolution called a pseudosphere. It is of interest to be able to calculate various parameters for the plug for design purposes. For example, the surface area, volume, and center of gravity are important to determine friction and wear of the valv… more

COMP: a basic non-linear last squares curve fitting package. [Interactive program for PDP-11/34 or 11/70]

Description: To find a mathematical model which describes (fits) data from a process which is fundamentally nonlinear, one usually uses nonlinear least-squares techniques on maxicomputers. These usually run in batch mode with the user supplying a model and initial ''guesstimates'' of its parameters. However, fitting the model to the data can be considered an art because computer algorithms either converge to true solutions, or converge to erroneous solutions, or fail to converge, depending on the quality of… more

ISABELLE half-cell control system

Description: The primary function of the ISABELLE half-cell control system is to monitor and control the magnet power supplies of the half-cell. In addition, the control system must be flexible enough that it can be expanded to become involved in additional areas such as vacuum and magnetic measurements. A control system based upon AGS control standards, but modified into a development tool for research and electrical engineering support was constructed. Special attention was given to the inherent differenc… more

User's guide to the LLL basic interpretere

Description: Scientists are finding increased applications for microprocessors as process controllers in their experiments. However, while microprocessors are small and inexpensive, they are difficult to program in machine or assembly language. A high-level language is needed to enable scientists to develop their own microprocessor programs for their experiments on location. Recognizing this need, LLL contracted to have such a language developed. This report describes the result -- the LLL BASIC interpreter… more

State Successes: Using Outreach and Eduction to Transcend Barriers to Wind Energy (Poster)

Description: Many states projected to contribute significantly to the United States' 20% wind energy by 2030 goal have not yet achieved a first wind farm, and many more have not yet hit the 100-MW mark. These states are struggling with basic barriers of the need for understanding of the wind resource; wind energy benefits and impacts; economic development, water, and carbon impacts; issues such as transmission, utility integration, siting, and wildlife; involvement of key constituents such as the electrical… more

Computer programs in BASIC language for graphite furnace atomic absorption using the method of additions. Part 1. Operating instructions

Description: These instructions describe how to use BASIC language programs to process data from atomic absorption spectrophotometers using the graphite furnace and the method of additions calibration technique. The instructions cover loading the programs, responding to computer prompts, choosing among various options for processing the data, performing operations with an automatic sampler, and producing reports. How the programs interact with each other is also explained. Examples of computer/operator dial… more

Manufacturing program for predicting equipment requirements (MAPPER)

Description: A computerized Manufacturing Program for Predicting Equipment Requirements (MAPPER) has been developed. MAPPER can be used to interpret component production requirements from shipping schedules, calculate equipment loading versus equipment capacity, display six months prior equipment utilization and display process yield data. MAPPER is written in BASIC computer language and can be executed using GE Mark II time-sharing equipment. A typical example of the use of MAPPER is presented.

Lessons-learned from the document production system redevelopment (DPS/R)

Description: Increased complexity of the computing environment is probably the most universal observation of developers going into Client/Server computing. The Lessons Learned document Provides some condensed bits of expertise gained by the Document Production System Redevelopment team. The intent is to distribute in a simplified format the knowledge the authors have gained, and to promote discussion of certain areas having unresolved or less-than-perfect resolution. Included are first, a description of the… more
