Walking Bells

Description: Recording of David Porter's Walking Bells for tape. The piece is a tour through an environmental/concrete landscape. It is another variation on the "cumulative form." This is the second in a series of four tape pieces. As with all these pieces, this piece comments on political and compositional methods and devices. In this instance, the piece makes reference to another composer whose style is borrowed. Other than that, it is pure experience. This piece should be listened to with speakers placed… more

Rapid eye movement

Description: Recording of Roger Doyle's Rapid eye movement. The title refers to the type of sleep called "Rapid Eye Movement" or REM, which is dream sleep. During REM sleep, the muscles of the eyes move as though the dreamer were watching something. Structurally, the work is conceived in the same way as Déjà vu occurs in life. There are 30 or 40 instances of mysterious familiarities of the same sounds placed in totally different contexts. Like the human cell, any extract from the composition will reveal the… more

Son recif

Description: Recording of Jacqueline Ozanne's "Son recif" for voice and tape. This piece comes from a work on the myth of the sirens and includes texts written on this theme in their original languages. As the singer/speaker repeats the story, it is crossed by the sounds of these languages, by songs that cannot continue, as well as successive states of emotion. The electroacoustic tape plays a constant dramatic role: sometimes worrisome, sometimes reassuring, sometimes enveloping presences, it continually i… more

Dictée

Description: Recording of Bernard Gagnon's Dictée for tape. The majority of the material was executed in real time. The instruments used are voice, a pencil, and also a few oscillator sounds. An oscillator provided a wave that was delayed by tape, and then turned into a voltage to modulate the early sound: a self-modulating delay loop. The piece is a reflection on the anxiety of first learning to write as well as on the degrees of the distances of the writing. The dictation comes from a loudspeaker, while t… more

An even game

Description: Recording of Jarmo Sermilä's An even game. Most people consider sports to be the antithesis of art. Sermilä argues that this is not always the case since the world of sports offers many pairs of opposites which appear in all areas of life, including art: for example, team-work vs. individualism, violence vs. sportsmanship, spontaneity vs. organization, etc. "An Even Game" is an imaginary team sport in which these characteristics are brought out - reduced, however, to musical terms. Two teams cl… more

Liège à Paris

Description: Recording of Henri Pousseur's Liège à Paris for tape. The preposition "à" refers to several possible verbs: first, Liège thinks of Paris, and his first way of expressing it is to go there in a fictitious way, to play to visit it, to be there. So one can perceive that this is not just an illusion, that Liege (just like Geneva or Montreal) is in Paris, in every sense of the word, including that of 'to belong'. All these cities are part of a vast linguistic and cultural fabric, of which Paris is u… more

Opening a Can of Worms

Description: Recording of Lars Larsson's Opening a Can of Worms. The composer speaks of the process behind this piece as follows: Talking gibberish, stopping mid-sentence only to find I forgot what I was talking about, and saying obscure quotes to communicate are things I do a lot. The work "Opening a can of Worms" reflects this in various ways: a) regarding the sound, I tried to incorporate as many conflicting sounds as possible, something that nobody would normally use in this way musically; b) regarding … more

Flurstück

Description: Recording of Ipke Starke's Flurstück. The composer denotes "Flurstück" as meaning a piece of countryside, a rural landscape (Flur), which is private property; this is important to a central theme of ownership and its interactions with natural environments vs more "technical" atmospheres. It is described as such: The background of the piece is the dismemberment of the landscape, the subdivided land. From this are born the images. Fields, travel, property, appropriation and expropriation, the bat… more
