Preparation, assembly and entry of data into the SPEAKEASY data base. Final report

Description: The purpose of this study was to provide assistance of non-policy nature in preparing data bases relating to the supply demand and price of crude oil, natural gas and other petroleum products. The data bases were to be used in determining the impact of decontrol of oil prices, announced by the President on April 5, 1979, on oil production, conservation of existing energy supplies, development of alternative energy sources, and dependency on foreign oil.

Manufacturing fuel-switching capability, 1988

Description: Historically, about one-third of all energy consumed in the United States has been used by manufacturers. About one-quarter of manufacturing energy is used as feedstocks and raw material inputs that are converted into nonenergy products; the remainder is used for its energy content. During 1988, the most recent year for which data are available, manufacturers consumed 15.5 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) of energy to produce heat and power and to generate electricity. The manufacturing … more

Use of GRASS for Routing Gas Pipeline Rights-of-Way

Description: This study, sponsored by the Gas Research Institute (GRI), was conducted to illustrate how a GIS (Geographic Information System) can be used to assess alternative routes for new gas pipeline rights-of-way (ROWs). The results show that a least-cost analysis using GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis and Support System) is a good method for siting new gas pipeline ROWs on the basis of environmental and engineering constraints to pipeline construction and maintenance. The cost and time needed to u… more

Human resource needs and development for the gas industry of the future

Description: The natural gas industry will confront many challenges in the 1990s and beyond, one of which is the development of human resources to meet future needs. An efficient, trained work force in this era of environmental concern, high technology, and alternative fuels is essential for the industry to continue to meet the competition and to safely deliver our product and service to all customers. Unfortunately, during this period there will be an increasing shortfall of technical personnel to replace … more

The use of inert gas as cushion gas in underground storage: Practical and economic issues

Description: The 395 underground natural gas storage fields in the United States are operated by both transmission and distribution companies as an integral part of the gas industry's delivery system. Base (cushion) gas is required to maintain storage reservoir volume and pressure to ensure adequate deliverability. Base gas is a major investment cost for new storage field development. An inert gas, such as nitrogen, that is less expensive than natural gas can be used to fill all or part of the base gas requ… more

Systems analysis of hydrogen/natural gas supplementation and separation

Description: The methodology for the study involved first selecting a specific site for the study, since using national estimates tends to obscure specific regional issues and problems which are critical to the evaluation of such concepts. After the selection of the site, the evaluation focuses upon specific potential markets for hydrogen, and then examines the mix of customers comprising these markets. This establishes the incentives and barriers in the market sphere. Finally, the pipeline infrastructure, … more

Capital requirements for energy sector: capital market access. The shift to successful efforts accounting: preliminary review of probable effects on oil and gas industry participants

Description: This report provides an initial assessment of the effects that the adoption of uniform successful efforts accounting might have on access to capital markets and investment behavior in the oil and gas industry. It also proposes a plan of interviews and analysis which would permit informed revision and expansion of that initial assessment. Section II presents a discussion of the origins and current status of the controversy between advocates of successful efforts and full cost accounting. An impo… more

Critique of the mid-range energy forecasting, system oil and gas supply models

Description: The Mid-Range Energy Forecasting System (MEFS) is a model used by the Department of Energy to forecast domestic production, consumption and price for conventional energy sources on a regional basis over a period of 5 to 15 years. Among the energy sources included in the model are oil, gas and other petroleum fuels, coal, uranium, and electricity. Final consumption of alternative energy sources is broken into end-use categories, such as residential, commercial and industrial uses. Regional price… more

Industrial market for sulfur dioxide emission-control systems. Final report. [Forecasting to 2000]

Description: Under the postulated EIA medium world oil price scenario, in which oil prices are projected to rise at a real rate of 2.2% per year, coal will represent from 78 to 91% of MFBI fuel consumption by the year 2000, up from the present 16%. This increase would occur even in the absence of FUA, because the cost of coal is substantially lower than the cost of oil or gas. Much of this market will develop in the relatively near to intermediate term (before 1990). Annual installations will be much lower … more

A program to develop the domestic natural gas industry in Indonesia: Case history of two World Bank projects

Description: Indonesia depends heavily on revenues from the export of LNG and oil, the availability of which appears to be decreasing. It is therefore making a strong effort to accelerate development of a domestic natural gas industry. A high priority has been given to the conversion of power plants and city gas systems, including local industries and commercial facilities, from liquid fuels to natural gas. This will release more oil for export, help to meet the objectives of Repelita V, and provide substan… more

Energy demand and interfuel substitution in the combined residential and commercial sector

Description: An integrated energy-demand model for the combined residential and commercial sector is presented. The model consists of two parts: the first determines aggregate demand for energy, and the second estimates market-shares for electricity, natural gas, and petroleum products. Demand elasticities for aggregate as well as individual fuels are analytically derivable. The study concludes that pricing strategies can be effective in stimulating the conservation of energy. Furthermore, raising prices of… more
