A proposal for a precision test of the standard model by neutrino-electron scattering (Large /hacek C/erenkov Detector Project)

Description: A precision measurement of neutrino-electron elastic scattering from a beam stop neutrino source at LAMPF is proposed. The total error in sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/ is estimated to be +-0.89/percent/. The experiment also will be sensitive to neutrino oscillations and supernova-neutrino bursts, and should set improved limits on the neutrino-charge radius and magnetic-dipole moment. The detector consists of a 2.5-million-gallon tank of water with approximately 14,000 photomultiplier tubes lining the … more

A Multivariate Time Series Method for Monte Carlo Reactor Analysis

Description: A robust multivariate time series method has been established for the Monte Carlo calculation of neutron multiplication problems. The method is termed Coarse Mesh Projection Method (CMPM) and can be implemented using the coarse statistical bins for acquisition of nuclear fission source data. A novel aspect of CMPM is the combination of the general technical principle of projection pursuit in the signal processing discipline and the neutron multiplication eigenvalue problem in the nuclear engine… more

nu/sub. mu. /C/sup 12/. -->. mu. /sup -/X cross section and nu/sub. mu. / - nu/sub e/ oscillation using the decay-in-flight source at Line-E of LAMPF

Description: This paper describes an experiment to measure the nu/sub ..mu../C/sup 12/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/X cross section and to detect nu/sub ..mu../ - nu/sub e/ oscillations. A test run was completed last year. The detector has been calibrated and backgrounds are under study. The sensitivity of the experiment is estimated for the 1985 LAMPF run cycle to be +-20% for the cross section measurement and the 90% confidence level limits for the neutrino oscillation experiment are sin/sup 2/2THETA < 10/sup -3/… more

Low Temperature Geothermal Energy Applications in the Albuquerque Area. Final Report, July 1, 1978-August 18, 1979

Description: A study was made of the engineering and economic feasibility of hot water geothermal energy applications in the Albuquerque area. A generalized system design was developed and used as the basis for a series of economic case studies. Reservoir and user siting considerations were studied in light of the economic findings. Several specific potential applications were identified, including university campuses, industrial and commercial facilities, and residential buildings. Specific key technical p… more

Investigating an API for resilient exascale computing.

Description: Increased HPC capability comes with increased complexity, part counts, and fault occurrences. In- creasing the resilience of systems and applications to faults is a critical requirement facing the viability of exascale systems, as the overhead of traditional checkpoint/restart is projected to outweigh its bene ts due to fault rates outpacing I/O bandwidths. As faults occur and propagate throughout hardware and software layers, pervasive noti cation and handling mechanisms are necessary. This re… more

A simulation infrastructure for examining the performance of resilience strategies at scale.

Description: Fault-tolerance is a major challenge for many current and future extreme-scale systems, with many studies showing it to be the key limiter to application scalability. While there are a number of studies investigating the performance of various resilience mechanisms, these are typically limited to scales orders of magnitude smaller than expected for next-generation systems and simple benchmark problems. In this paper we show how, with very minor changes, a previously published and validated simu… more

An examination of content similarity within the memory of HPC applications.

Description: Memory content similarity has been e ectively exploited for more than a decade to reduce memory consumption. By consolidating duplicate and similar pages in the address space of an application, we can reduce the amount of memory it consumes without negatively a ecting the application's perception of the memory resources available to it. In addition to memory de-duplication, there may be many other ways that we can exploit memory content similarity to improve system characteristics. In this pape… more

Design and Development of Selective Extractants for An/Ln Separations

Description: This study has succeeded in further developing phosphinoylmethyl pyridine compounds as selective recognition and separations agents for trivalent lanthanide and actinide ions present in nuclear materials. The parameters for efficient separations have been further elucidated and factors important to further development have been identified. Further development will lead to optimal extractant design for effective actinide ion partitioning under process practical conditions. The primary objective … more
