Institutional applications of solar total-energy systems. Draft final report

Description: Conceptual designs are presented for thermal and photovoltaic solar total energy (STE) systems optimized to have the lowest possible life-cycle costs. An analysis is made of the market for STE systems, synthesizing the results of interviews with institutional-sector decision-makers and representatives of utilities, component manufacturers, architect/engineers, contractors, and labor unions. The operation and outputs of the market model developed to estimate potential STE system sales and result… more

Institutional applications of solar total-energy systems. Draft final report. Volume 2. Appendixes

Description: The appendices present the analytical basis for the analysis of solar total energy (STE) systems. A regional-climate model and a building-load requirements model are developed, along with fuel-price scenarios. Life-cycle costs are compared for conventional-utility, total energy, and STE systems. Thermal STE system design trade-offs are performed and thermal STE system performance is determined. The sensitivity of STE competitiveness to fuel prices is examined. The selection of the photovoltaic … more

CEREN concept: a case study of the French industrial energy data system

Description: A case study of the French CEREN system is provided. The foundation of the system is outlined, that is, the concepts that ensure the systems comprehensiveness, detail, and manageability. The implementation of the system is emphasized, in particular, the data collection and data processing methodology. Applications of the CEREN energy information system are reviewed for analyzing energy use, cross-industry impacts, and social, and economic impacts of changing energy-use patterns. (MHR)

Uranium enrichment management review: summary of analysis

Description: In May 1980, the Assistant Secretary for Resource Applications within the Department of Energy requested that a group of experienced business executives be assembled to review the operation, financing, and management of the uranium enrichment enterprise as a basis for advising the Secretary of Energy. After extensive investigation, analysis, and discussion, the review group presented its findings and recommendations in a report on December 2, 1980. The following pages contain background materia… more

Technical overview of cogeneration: the hardware, the industries, the potential development

Description: Because the by-product heat from a power-conversion process is captured for productive use in a cogeneration system, instead of exhausted to the environment as it is in a conventional power plant, cogeneration represents an important energy-conservation technique. By cogenerating, an industrial plant can save the fuel that would have been needed to produce the amount of heat captured. Recognizing the significant energy-savings potential offered by cogeneration, DOE has undertaken a major R, D, … more

Providing technical assistance to the Energy Development Board of Mercer County

Description: The background and summary of activities of the general organizational approach developed by Resource Planning Associates (RPA) for managing energy-related community development and to test that approach in a specific site are discussed. The general approach was adapted to Mercer County, North Dakota, the setting for the construction of two 2-unit coal-fired power plants and two or more coal-gasification plants, as well as for related coal mining. RPA's activities were designated to provide the… more

Recommendations for enforcing and administering lighting-efficiency standards in existing public buildings in New York State. Final report

Description: To determine the most efficient, cost-effective means of enforcing lighting standards in existing public buildings, various enforcement procedures were investigated. A summary of conclusions and recommendations are presented. In Chapter 1, the adoption of a modified version of the sections of the proposed ASHRAE 100 standards that relate to lighting is recommended. The basic features of the proposed ASHRAE 100 standards are described and compared with those of other types of standards, and the … more

Economics and regulation of petroleum futures markets

Description: Because the futures market in petroleum products is a relatively recent phenomenon, the implications of public policies formulated for that market have not yet been fully explored. To provide the Office of Competition of the Department of Energy (DOE) with sufficient information to assess policy alternatives, Resource Planning Associates, Inc. (RPA) was asked to analyze the development of the futures market in No. 2 oil, assess the potential for futures markets in other petroleum products, and … more

European waste-to-energy systems. An overview

Description: The recovery of energy through the combustion of municipal solid waste is a well-established technique for conserving energy. Combustion units can produce electricity; hot water for domestic use; and steam for district heating, industrial processes, or the drying of sewage sludge. There are fewer than 20 such waste-to-energy systems in the United States. In Western Europe, however, 243 combustion units are currently recovering energy from municipal solid waste. The oldest of these facilities we… more
