Low Temperature Thermoluminescence of Gamma Irradiated Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate

Description: Thermoluminescence in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) induced by Co/ sup 60/ gamma irradiation at liquid nitrogen temperature (-198 deg C) was investigated. Glow curves in the temperature range --196 to 0 deg C were measured for a series of gamma exposure dosages ranging from 10/sup 4/ roentgen to 5 x 10/sup 6/ roentgen. The heating rate used for glow curve measurements was 12 deg C per minute. Twice recrystallized Mallinckrodt reagent grade potassium dihydrogen phosphate, with a grain siz… more

Production of transplutonium elements in the high flux isotope reactor (HFIR)

Description: The techniques described have been demonstrated to be adequate to predict the contents of transplutonium element production targets which have been irradiated in the HFIR. The deviations, at least for isotopes of mass 253 or less, are generally within the usual analytical uncertainties, or else are for isiotopes which are of little overall import to the program. Work is especially needed to get a better picture of the production of /sup 250/Cm, /sup 254/Es, /sup 255/Es, and ultimately /sup 257/… more

High flux isotope reactor accident analysis

Description: In 1968 the ion chambers in the HFIR safety system were repositioned (moved further from the core) in order to extend chamber lifetime and increase system reliability. In 1973 new flux signal conditioners were installed to replace obsolete components. As a result of these two modifications, the system has become more sensitive to noise. Efforts to eliminate the noise at the source met with little or no success. Remedial changes are described and evaluated. Specifically, these changes include pl… more

Heat transfer calculations for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Technical specifications: bases for safety limits and limiting safety system settings

Description: Heat transfer analyses, in support of the preparation of the HFIR technical specifications, were made to establish the bases for the safety limits and limiting safety system settings applicable to the HFIR. The results of these analyses, along with the detailed bases, are presented.
