Strength of irradiated graphite: a review

Description: Experimental data on the mechanical strength of nuclear graphite subjected to fast neutron irradiation are reviewed. At fluences below the turnaround point, the mean tensile, flexural, or compressive strength, S, increases over the unirradiated value, S/sub 0/, in a manner related to the irradiation-induced change in Young's modulus, E: S/S/sub 0/ = (E/E/sub 0/)/sup K/. The exponent, k, takes a value between 0.5 and 1, depending on the graphite grade, the irradiation temperature, and the method… more

Strength of nonuniformly oxidized PGX graphite

Description: Flexural and tensile tests were performed on PGX graphite oxidized to produce a steep surface oxidation gradient. Companion tensile specimens were oxidized under different conditions to produce uniform oxidation throughout the specimen, and their tensile strength and Young's modulus were measured. The flexural strength, flexural elastic modulus, and tensile strength were reduced much less by surface oxidation than by uniform oxidation. The test data were in good agreement with a simple linear e… more

Final report on graphite irradiation test OG-3. [Fast neutrons]

Description: The results of dimensional, thermal expansivity, thermal conductivity, Young's modulus, and tensile strength measurements on graphite specimens irradiated in capsule OG-3 are presented. The graphite grades investigated included near-isotropic H-451 (three different preproduction lots), TS-1240, and SO818; needle coke H-327; and European coal tar pitch coke grades P/sub 3/JHA/sub 2/N, P/sub 3/JHAN, and ASI2-500. Data were obtained in the temperature range 823/sup 0/K to 1673/sup 0/K. The peak fa… more

Strength testing of production grade H-451 graphite; lots 472, 478, and 482

Description: Ninety-eight production logs of H-451 graphite, from three separate extrusion lots, were sampled for tensile testing. Eight replicate axial specimens from the midlength center and four replicate radial specimens from the end center of each log were tested. The axial strengths (average value 12.7 MPa) showed wide lot-to-lot and log-to-log variations, while the radial strengths (average value 15.8 MPa) were more uniform. Statistically based acceptance criteria which could be used for assigning a … more

Advanced Graphite Fuel Systems: Quarterly Progress Report for the Period Ending February 14, 1967.

Description: The objective of this program is to develop an understanding of the properties of the various types of carbons and graphites required for use in high-temperature reactors of advanced design and thus to provide a basis for substantial improvements in their service behavior.

Statistical study of the strength of near-isotropic graphite

Description: More than 2000 tensile and four-point bend tests were made at ambient temperature on specimens from one log of extruded near-isotropic petroleum-coke-based nuclear graphite (Great Lakes Carbon Corporation grade H-451). The mean strengths showed the expected systematic dependence on orientation and location, with axial specimens stronger than radial specimens and material near the edge of the log stronger than material near the centerline. There were additional local fluctuations in strength whi… more
