Silent Cacophony

Description: Recording of Matt Ingalls' Silent Cacophony. "Silent Cacophony" consists entirely of manipulated vocal sounds through Barry Vercoe "C Sound". Originally for 4 speakers, it was mixed to stereo with binaural filtering from Tom Erbe "SoundHack". The pre-recorded audio includes unprocessed coughing that with time slowly begins to become electronically manipulated until the sound begins to create harmonies and new interactions.

Radiocaravan

Description: Recording of Pekka Siren's Radiocaravan. This piece is based on international short wave news sending captured by Finnish radio in South Finland during the August '92 collapse of communistic Soviet regime. Documentary sounds are used to build a sounding planetarium radio composition which composes radio itself. Radio voices, noises and music are used as material and as an instrument for a new composition.

Memorias

Description: Recording of Ricardo Dal Farra's Memorias. This piece is for computer-generated sounds and tape. A succession of events, have given shape to these 'partial memories', which the title translates to memories. The NeXT computer made it possible to generate and transform the sound material in real time. Both frequency modulation and the physical modeling of plucked strings were used.

Terra Infirma

Description: Recording of Richard Karpen's Terra Infirma. This piece is for computer realized sound and it is part of a cycle of works, which acts as a prelude when performed together. All of the sound materials were derived in some way from acoustic sources and most are hybrids in that they combine digitized sound samples with purely synthetic material using digital signal processing techniques developed by the composer.

Description: Recording of Tamas Ungvary's Recollections n°1. The tension is obvious during the introduction where sheer inner aggression pounds the listener by means of sonic noise bursts. Tierra Caliente

Description: Recording of Wlodzimierz Kotonski's Tierre Caliente. For this piece the recorded sonic material was put through a series of digital treatments. The material is based entirely on sounds from nature: whistling of the wind, chirping of crickets, croaking of frogs, the voices of birds, the voices of other living beings, including the thunder of falling stones and even a volcano erupting. Description: Recording of Ryszard Szeremeta's Celtic Circles - 1. It is for string plucked instruments, piano, wind instruments, percussion, and electronics. This piece uses synthetic instruments which eventually unfold into a upbeat song with a synthesizer providing a melody and the percussion accompanying. The piece switches between rhythmic sections and still almost-legato sections.

Papier en cage

Description: Recording of Bernard Donzel-Gargand's Papier en cage. In relation to dance, photoelectric cells are installed in the choreographic space and allow the dancer to interpret sound events, to create his music in real time. SAMI (computerized musical assistance system) is used by linking MIDI of an eight-input intelligent Analog/Digital converter, and a user interface written in MAX. The sampled sounds ​​are transmitted via MIDI to a Macintosh, then after transformation to a sound generator.

Sondfile 1 - ...x

Description: Recording of Lothar Voigtländer's Sondfile 1 - ...X. The tape contains only the original sounds of the harp, which were stored as "sound files" in the computer. With the specific possibilities of digital sound processing, it was then cut, mixed, transposed, modulated in many ways and re-collaged. Corresponding to the playing characteristics of the harp, such as bisbigliando, glissando, with cymbal, with rubber mallet, plucked with fingernails, other timbaliques, etc.

Deuce

Description: In recording of Evelyn Ficarra's Deuce. This piece was composed using an Akai S1000 sampler and an Atari 1040ST computer. "Deuce" takes its starting point frim one basic gesture: a sound that us reiterated with increasing speed. This gesture ultimately provides the structure of the entire piece.

The Other

Description: Recording of Richard Karpen's The Other. This work resembles the difference between reality and hallucination, and in regards to being a composer, hearing imaginary music from within. There are several excerpts from the second and fourth movements of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and a short excerpt from his fourth. The excerpts have been manipulated using Csound or SNDWARP unit generator.

Whitewash

Description: Recording of Paul Koonce's Whitewash. This work was created using the CMUSIC sound-synthesis language running on a NeXT computer. The source sounds for the work consist of two piano tones (one low, another high) and a contrasting granularly synthesized chord sound. The three sounds form the basis for development that uses successive granular processing to transform and fuse earlier sounds and gestures into incarnations of new character, depth and speed.

Crucifixion I

Description: Recording of Rudolf Ruzicka's Crucifixion I. The electroacoustic computer composition was inspired by Salvador Dali. The program used FORTRAN language on a PDP 11/34 computer. The output data and MIDI of the NOTATOR and LOGIC programs converted to music on the ATARI, MACINTOSH, and PC computers and realized on synthesizers. This piece is perceived as a meditative musical act.

Lituus

Description: Recording of José Manuel López's Lituus. The making of this piece began with the recording of small sound samples: long held notes, the use of different mutes, and various playing modes. This first step allowed the composer to have the essential sound stage material to start processing previously digitally recorded samples. The use of a sampler, brass, computer, and midi allows for a polyphonic structure.
